I think it will, boy of toasts.
It's not that hard, and since Wii U is gonna be Nintendos last "conventional" console, much probably, then they don't need to kill it for a successor. Because there will be no successor. Nintendo says we've reached a brickwall in graphics, so why make something so much more powerfull than the Wii U, for such small gains ?
That's right. Next Nintendo hardware is gonna be 6'' tablet ala Nvidia shield, with removable screen. And the "console" will be an 10'' tablet, with the most beefier and cutting edge specs you can imagine. By 2017, the power inside those little tablets will be amazing. More than enough to rival in graphical quality with whatever who else comes with. Because you can't go any higher than absolute photorealism.

Poor reasoning. Knack didn't outsell it, it oustold in the UK, and won't outsell it long-term. Also, the success of those two titles says little.
Your overall comparisson is poor too. N64 was by far the most powerful 5th gen console, it just had a poor and expensive media drive, making it the most expensive to develop for. It was also the last console to launch, giving it a lot of ground to make up against the competition. Wii U launched first, is the weakest and the cheapest to develop for making it the exact opposite of N64. Further - and much worse - Wii U has yet to release groundbreaking software that N64 enjoyed such as M64, OoT and Goldeneye. So thus far the systems as far apart as systems can be.
The one thing that may become common is 3rd party support (or lack there of). Wii U's done well so far with COD, AC, Batman, Watch_Dogs and so on, but if games keep getting poor sales that may dry up as soon as next year, making Wii U a place reserved mostly for 1st party software.

Didn't Nintendo actively alienate 3rd party devs/publishers prior to N64 release by only giving out licenses and dev kits to certain dev houses (the "dream team") ? Sounds pretty different to the current situation to me.
Wii U is selling no where close to the N64.
As in not even in the same area code, ball part, soccer stadium, (whatever analogy you want to use).
The N64 actually sold fairly close to the original Wii in North America for its first 2 years. You could not find a N64 for holiday 1996, it was sold out everywhere, and its holiday 1997 was *monstrous*.
There is no GoldenEye equivalent (or even close) on the Wii U either and there likely never will be.
Wii U is a lot closer to the GameCube, right now it probably needs Mario Kart 8 just to get to GameCube sales levels, as of right now its selling considerably worse.

I believe Wii U can pull N64 or SNES numbers.
The one year advantage will give it time to sell more for more years than if it had released now.
Even if they just sell na average of 7 million per year during the next 5 years, it will help them reach those numbers.
But more important is how they finish this generation. If they can finish it with the market on their side, they could do even better next gen.
Next year will be a better sample on how all consoles will do this time.

Yes, but I see it getting Cube numbers, perhaps slightly worse. It has very little momentum right now and I'm not sure that'll change next year. Especially when infamous, watchdogs, titanfall et all hit.
Funny enough, I enjoyed the N64 and GC quite a lot. I expect Nintendo to give us that "Nintendo magic" and even double or triple down given the precarious position they are in. Necessity often breeds innovation.
Playstation = The Beast from the East

Sony + Nintendo = WIN! PS3 + PSV + PS4 + Wii U + 3DS
