Yeah but, for me, when it came to MGS4, it feels like I spent waaaaaay more time watching cutscenes and not a lot of time playing. Some of the chapters were so short.

Wonder how much the loading screens added to that perception? Also, you're saying - basically - that there wasn't enough gameplay. Sure, I concede that's entirely possible for some people to experience.

The game has one flaw and one flaw only. I'm AMAZED that (from what I've seen) not a single person has mentioned it in reviews, threads etc. It has the most horrible shadows I've ever seen. You remember that?

Quoting is messed up on my PC for some reason. I'll see if this works-- Little Big Planet 2 was a gem for me! If I made a top 20, it would definitely be amongst them. My kid and I played so many user created levels together. And, while I was thinking of my list last night (that's what I do at work when I should be...err...working...) I wanted to add Lost Odyssey just to cover the RPG gap. It fally just shy of greatness, though. And dammit--how did I not include Valkyria Chronicles!! It's my favorite PS3 game!

In previous gens, I would happily list many JRPGs that were in my top 10 games but 7th Gen, couldn't say there was 1 I enjoyed, could never get into Valkyria Chronicles. .. actually that's a lie, the best JRPG I played this during 7th gen was FFXII as it came out in March 2007 in the UK.

Hmm, pie.

God of War III
Mass Effect 2
Red Dead Redemption
Bioshock
Skyrim
The Last of Us
Gears of War
Castlevania: Lords of Shadow
Alan Wake
Uncharted 2

sorry for not taking your "since a while now" statement too seriously. It's so arbitrary and unconfounded that it borders on irrelevant.

It's close to impossible to provide a sufficient sample of fav lists on several years. So your statement of "recently" falls under the same category.

I was merely making the point that the absence should be significant of something. At least consider that other early gen games still hit the fav lists today such as Halo 3, Portal, Gears, Mass Effect, Bioshock, Lost Odyssey, etc.

"It's close to impossible to provide a sufficient sample of fav lists on several years. So your statement of "recently" falls under the same category."

No it doesn't. Here is a very notable example: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2013-11-04-eurogamers-games-of-the-generation-the-top-50

Not even the top 50!? Yakuza? Fable2!?!?!? COME ON.

MGS won how many GOTY awards again? From the wiki:

"Guns of the Patriots received widespread critical acclaim, garnering perfect reviews and Game of the Year awards from several major gaming publications, including GameSpot, which claimed that the game is "technically flawless" "

____

Moreover:

"It's close to impossible to provide a sufficient sample of fav lists on several years. So your statement of "recently" falls under the same category."

You're the one who said it hasn't been featuring on fav lists of recent years. My intent was clear at the outset: In reviewing the games of the generation - recently, i.e. at the close of the generation. I.e. now.

How is one example a sample ? And do not forget my point is not about awards or early praise but about "recently" vs "a while ago" disappearance of MGS IV from fav lists.

PS. you are pissed alright

Games that "defined" the generation?

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare - representing the defining genre
Wii Sports - representing the focus on controls (also Wii's defining title)
Wii Fit - representing the expanded audience and added peripherals
Minecraft - representing indies (also PC's defining title)
Words With Friends - representing mobile gaming
Animal Crossing: Wild World - representing handheld/touchscreen gaming (also DS's defining title)
Gears of War - Xbox 360's defining title
Uncharted: Drake's Fortune - PS3's defining title
Monster Hunter Freedom - PSP's defining title
World of Warcraft - representing the MMO, although its position as part of the 7th generation is debatable (as it released early enough to possibly be considered 6th gen... as it's PC, the actual line is hard to define, do we base it on console generation, or handheld generation?)

EDIT: Note that I am not calling these the best games. But they certainly were the ones that established or epitomised certain features of the generation.

Very well thought out list! I approve =)

I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!

Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.

Pisses me off that everyone's forgotten about MGS4.

My only list MGS4 would make is the biggest disappointment list. It's main problem was and is its story, which is a huge mess and not what it should've been. It's a pretty big flaw for a game of a series I play largely for the story. Also, the game wasn't that great otherwise, either.

Did you play any of the other MGS games? Are you a fan? If you answer no to these, then you can't really comment on the story.t

MGS4 had the best story of any MGS game. It was incredible. "War has changed..." was such a terrific entry point for the plot. MGS always has and always have a strange storyline.

"Also, the game wasn't that great otherwise, either."

That's not what (all) the reviews said. That's not what I thought. It was terrific.

This again... Yes, I've played practically every MGS game and I loved them. Well, I loved MGS1, MGS2, and to a lesser extent, MGS3. I didn't like Portable Ops due to its horrible controls, although the game didn't sound all that bad otherwise. MGS4 just threw everything it could from the series, forming the ultimate mess, and everything was explained with nanomachines. It sure did explain a lot of things but it didn't feel at all satisfying. Even the big plot twist was pretty lame after the initial shock, which I can't say about the other MGS games.

And about gameplay, I don't think it was bad at all. I just think it wasn't a masterpiece in that regard. I liked it but it wasn't that great.

1: Wii Sports: The start of the Motion Gaming Revolution. Or to an extent, the break away from vertical progression in game design. Taught developers its not just about graphics, but reinventing the way we play.

2. Assassin's Creed: First time Sandbox was not only about variety but scale. One of the first "Next Gen Titles"

3. Gears of War: Lay down the ground work for what was to be expected with Next Gen Graphics. UE3 became the go to for most games in the first few years.

4. Uncharted 2: Proof that Gaming can break from it's Kid's Toy moniker for full on action pack entertainment for everyone. Also the invention of the "Cinematic Set Piece" that every game, regardless of genre, wants a part of. Elevated the graphical benchmark even still to this day.

5. Final Fantasy XIII: Everything that you didn't want to happen....did with this one title. Set in motion the downfall of Japanese Gaming as we knew it.

6. Demon's Souls: When Japanese Devs struggled with how to go forward in RPG development, From Software displayed the path. Now every game wants to be like Demon's Souls.

7. Elder Scrolls Oblivion: First AAA title of Next Gen to fully realize potential of world simulation on Console. Took Sandbox to the next level. Also the start of half finished games, and Patch madness.

8. Mass Effect and Heavy Rain: The reinvention of story telling within games. Set in motion how actions could lead to different outcomes within a game.

9. Journey: like Flower and Flow before it, ThatGameCompany creates the Non Gamer Game. Its not about story or gameplay, its about how it makes you feel.

10. Little Big Planet: The invention of a new genre that has become all the rage. Play, Create, Share. I see things like Minecraft as the gradual succession of LBP's ground work
