Forums - Gaming - Why the hate for androgynous characters?

It's easy for most people to find something wrong with what they're not familiar with or don't understand. It makes sense that so many westerners don't 'get it' since none of them have probably ever lived in any part of east asia. Statements like I'm seeing on this page remind me that more people need to get out and see the world.

There's nothing wrong with any number feminine male characters/people. Learn to deal with it, folks, it's the way the world is.

I am pretty sure everybody deals with it with their wallet and they buy what appeals to them. Last time I looked the Japanese gaming industry is really struggling for profit and number of games sold compared to the West.

Because feminine straight man in real life annoys me to no end. In my point of view a man should be brave, manly and have a presence, I'm not talking about physical features, a feminine looking man can have a very manly attitude and still be very attractive.

Women (not girls) in majority, wants a man, not a girly man.

Well, I'm very sorry that you get annoyed by feminine men and have such archaic views of gender roles.

You're right. I need to start taking some estrogen pills. Fuck all this testosterone.

And while you're there, get a shit load of bread and butter. We're gonna put your sandwich making ass to work!

Ok now you've attacked my mandhood. Its back. Screw them estrogen pills!

STFU and succumb to the wonders of estrogen and sandwich making >:D

No you make me a sandwich!! Getting mad at me just because I dont want my chick to have a D.

Japanese games never try to conform to the norms of political correctness. If you see a "girly" character in a Japanese game, it's because that's the art direction the developers wanted to take, and nothing else. I really respect that.
In contrast, certain big publishers, namely EA & Ubisoft, are notorious for ruining their games trying extra hard to conform with political correctness. Churches without symbols in Assassin's Creed 3 so that nobody gets "offended", gay characters that feel forced in Dragon Age 2, the list goes on.
If there is one reason that Japan is cool, it's because all Japanese people shit on political correctness. Hurray.

Yes because Japanese publishers never force their devs to do anything based on market trends or political correctness.

Just like Vaan and Penelo were featured in Final Fantasy XII for their artistic merit and not thrown in to conform to Japanese teen stereotypes...

Sorry, I missed FFXII. Last two I played were X(loooong time ago) and XIII. Political correctness is usually against stereotypes, not the other way around. Recent example is Blizzard dev getting harassed by some "journalist" because female characters in blizzard dota look too sexy. And that's "sexist" and "offensive" somehow to the PC crowd.

Whenever I see a tiny girlboy with a huge sword which outweighs the character by 100lbs, I lose interest in the game. It is just plain stupid to me.

I love androgynous characters...

So, I've read through the thread since I last posted and there have been many good arguments put forward. But one kinda bugs me, the one about cliches.

I don't see how a feminine man running about with a huge sword is any less acceptable than a big ass muscley space marine in power arming cutting people up with his gun/chainsaw combo. But both have the right to exist. I just want people to get over the androgynous characters.

There should be variety. But, what you describe sounds like Warhammer 40,000 Space Marines and Gears of War and not many other games really. Most first person games you rarely see the main character so it leaves a player to imagine almost anything they want. I do not have a problem with some androgeny it is just practically every JRPG really uses a lot of feminine males. I used to love JRPGs when the graphics did not give away the over abundance of feminine males (NES -PS1 era) , but after that the graphics make the andorgeny in almost every male super apperent, and I stopped buying. I suppose I care as I wiould like to play unique Japanese games, but not ones the constant banal anime look.

But I'm wanting to know why people don't like the androgynous characters in particular. There's plenty of other character tropes people could hate on in modern JRPGs but this one seems to get particular hate.

Luckily, there are still Japanese developers (like From Software with DS and Capcom with DD) who embrace old Japan spirit...and given popularity and success of medieval settings in cRPG/WRPGs, I reckon there will be much more in this gen.

In FF9 there is this villian called Kuja, he looks a bit like a girl and he has eye shadow stuff on his eyes like girls have.
The thing I don't like about this guy is that he is wearing a thong or whatever its called.
So this guy, is wearing a thong.. come on, you have to draw the line somewhere.
