I thought MS got rid of the 24 hour check in?

They did.

I believe the point of this thread is to try and say something along the lines of:

"Hey look, people use their consoles with the internet connected. That means having a 24 hour internet check-in DRM policy was no big deal."

No offense to anyone here, but drawing that sort of conclusion from this is absolutely asanine.

maybe those people are not on this site because they dont have internet?

I stood against it but not because I dont have internet, but because not everyone in the world has.

Also lets say you temporarily lost your internet connection for a few days, then youre stuck with a box that cant do anything after 24 hours....a box for which you paid £350-£430, and £50 for the games (£60 if you bought them off PSN or XBL). It reminds you that no matter how much you spend, you dont own it which would be stupid.

Anyway, theres not one single advantage to it for the consumer so why would anyone support it unless they work for MS?

A forum dedicated to games is probably the worst place to ask this question. Everyone here is more of a hardcore gamer. The 24 hour check in was never going to affect us. Doesn't mean we had to like it.

That's exactly it. It does carry no advantages at all to the consumer and would not be required at all for any of the games to function. It was 100% anti-consumer from the start and they tried to sugar coat it was family sharing which was never even gone into detail. Their original vision had no rentals, no resale (unless permitted by publishers) unless brought to specific retail chains. No searching for the best possible return on your property. After you bought something they still felt they had rights to get a portion of your sale, which is preposterous.

They can still give you family sharing without the 24 hour DRM and I am sure we will see it in the future too for digital downloaded title. I am sure we will see a lot of great upgrades like this within the next few years.

Physical titles should remain as is. Digital should add perks to entice us to believe they are worth being charged the same price as retail while carrying no actual ownership rights.

This is my take on the whole thing and personally I am appalled that people treat all of this like it is no big deal just because they don't personally care. It affects everyone and allowing it will carry a lot of consequences moving forward.

iPhone = Great gaming device. Don't agree? Who cares, because you're wrong.

Currently playing:

Final Fantasy VI (iOS), Final Fantasy: Record Keeper (iOS) & Dragon Quest V (iOS)

Got a retro room? Post it here!

My X-Box 360, PS3, and Wii are almost always offline. I don't even have my 360 plugged in via ethernet, and I don't have a wifi card in my old model

My grammar errors are justified by the fact that I am a brazilian living in Brazil. I am also very stupid.

People who don't have the internet are not the target market. Guess what? people who liv ein countries without a cell network aren't the target market for an iPhone. People who live in areas without electricity aren't the target market for any electronics. And people who live in countries with poor internet aren't the target market for the X1.

Also, saying there is "not one single advantage" is hyperbole. You clearly don't know what MS was planning if you say that. The 24 hour checkin was to allow sharing. Obviously you can't share games offline, or everyone can share a game, others log offline.... free game. The family sharin g and cloud stored games allowed those of us who are connected 24/7 anyway to actually move into the 21st century as far as game storage/sharing.

I think MS realized all the countries with less infrastructure were going with Sony products anyway, why target them? The 360's prime advantages over the PS3 were always it's online and multiplayer capabilities, they were planning to widen the gap once again.

No.

Please don't tell me this thread is aimed at trying to make it seem like the 24 hour check in was no big deal.

I hope it is :) Because it is not a big deal and the thread is about just proving it...
I was pissed enough about all that so Microsoft removed their Family Sharing I was hoping for just because of this non-sense...

OT: By the way; for any Xbox One owner, something very weird is happening...
I pre-ordered my Xbox One but as my EB-Games did not open before 8AM (...) I had to go visit a friend who pre-ordered it somewhere else and got it at midnight.
I logged with my account on his Xbox One, played with him during the night, etc... Then in the morning went to pick up my baby, plugged it in, bought some online games (Ryse, Forza, Powershot Golf and Dead Rising 3), downloaed them, played them, try to log with a different account (my wife, my kids) and it worked okay (they can play games). Now, my friend called me and he actually COULD play those games on his console too. Checked days later and we are actually able to play games on both consoles... Anyone else noticed that?

People using their consoles with the internet does not prove that 24 hour checkup DRM is no big deal.

One scenario lets you play games with internet and without. The other lets you play games with internet and no games if your internet is out (after a 24-hour period).

As for Family Sharing, they never even detailed what it was and even so, it can still be implemented for digital content without a 24 hour checkup DRM since someone would need to be online to begin with just to access it.

Yah we have this debate months ago and it is definitly not an interresting one (esp. on these forums)... It is not a big deal for me and for several others looks like. It seems to be a big one for you (and several others) and I respect that.

Family Sharing: It was detailled :  The plan was clear, buy the game, have up to 10 people added to your "family" and those people can "check-out" games to play them on any console they are logged on (and lock them during that time); this required the 24h check. The fact that some people did not believe it or challenged (as always) Microsoft of hiding or not "revealing" all the details was just pure speculations from haters who saw another great evil plan from MS...

As of now, you do not need to be online at all to play your downloaded games so they cannot implement it for those "already" downloaded games. They can however implement a future way of proptecting these games (maybe to download a 24h required check that can work on many consoles OR like today a version that is tied to your console). Let's just hope that it will happen...

Nope always connected

@Imaginedvl

There where people a few weeks ago that didn´t belive snap, suspend, voice comands and TV integration would work on the Xbox One.

People belived Xbox had serious problems with manufecture and would not be able to ship the same number of units.

And so on, and so forth.

I do not disagree with the fact that physical version should remain the same. For the reasons you specified.

But when you say that just because we do not personnaly care we should not let this happen because it will affect everyone; this is where you are wrong imo.

I personnaly CARE for it actually to happen : what the 24h check brings to the table is actually something I WANT (to have my familiy be able to play all my digital games on my 3 consoles without the need to buy it for each account); and I do not see why I would not be pushing for that...
