they could make and fps francise or get so 3rd party exclusives like zombiu.

They need to stop marketing towards 7-8 year olds and old people. They need to get a better marketing team period.
To me this gen is already lost, but Nintendo can convince people to pick up the system to complement one of the other two systems. If they expand their library and add more IPs that deviate from what they're currently providing - while continuing to focus on what they do best - I think it will pay them dividends in the long run. They need to diversify their stable.
They have to come out of their shell. Hardshid (or necessity) tends to breed innovation. Nintendo has to adapt to the current realities and get with the program.
Marketing is VERY important. To me, one of the biggest issues with the Cube was the child like image that was attached to it. Nintendo needs to shed this from the Wii U. I thought the GC was great but it was presented (or at least interpreted) as a system for children, and that drove people to the PS2 and XB.
Playstation = The Beast from the East

Sony + Nintendo = WIN! PS3 + PSV + PS4 + Wii U + 3DS
They would need to get third party developers fully on board. Part of the reason Sony and Microsoft succeed in the markets they have is due to getting the developers on-side. Involve as many devs of different sizes as possible when designing the next console. Get the devs on side, the PS/Xbox style games will come and the audience would slowly follow. Then they'd also have the added advantage of Nintendo's quality first party games.
Nintendo really can't do anything at this point. the playstation brand, had a monopoly on the console market, how did microsoft take market share and get back in the game, well they made a perfect controller, except for the d-pad, made online gaming huge, made a console that matched or exceeded the playstation 3 in graphics, and got all the third party support they needed, and even with all this, microsoft was very fortunate it arrived one year early, and the ps3 was 200$ more expensive, if sony had launched at 399$ with a better controller they would crushed microsoft this last gen easily.
i cant say what the steps are that they should do, but what they can do to hook me would be too...
-Focus less on gimmicks and more about games
-release new ips . To be absolutely honest, im sick of mario, zelda and the same old characters. it has got to the point where i have thought nintendo games aren't revolutionary anymore (im not saying they aren't great games though)
-be more consumer friendly, ive read a couple of things recently that has shaken my trust in nintendo i.e how they dont see games as art and the whole youtube stuff.
-third party support, need more of it.
-reasonable pricing, as it is now i think the wii u is over priced specially if your looking at the competition
They shouldn't. Nintendo won't grab the hardcore audience this gen in the same way that Sony & Microsoft failed to grasp the casual audience last gen.

it would be hard to do almost impossibe. I say that because as long as Sony and MS keeps making machines 3d parties will keep supporting them and as long as they continue to get support Ninty will never get that audience. it doesnt matter if Ninty got every 3rd party game the others were getting. SOny/MS fans will continue to want to play on Sony/MS machines. Hell just look at the sales of the last COD and AC games on Wii U versus those of PS4/x1 and thsoe are lauch consoles
