I cannot believe that every single time one of these annoucements are made, someone tries to convince me that it's sold to consumers, not shipped to retailers. They argue adamantly, twisting the language and ignoring which source said what in order be right.

And every single time, it's shipped, not sold. Shipped, not sold, every single time. Has Sony ever, ever, ever reported Sold to consumers? And why would they? If they could have announced this during the Christmas season (when they would have hit 1 million shipped, if they're supposedly hitting 1 million sold now), they absolutely would have reported it then just like all of their other press releases.

Last time around, people became so adamantly convinced that these were sold-to-consumer figures that someone was LOLed at for suggesting otherwise. It was an entire contingent of regulars here, actually, and then Source went and embarrased everyone involved by simply asking Sony and having them say, explicitly, that they were shipped to retail figures, just like they always do, every single time. Do we really need to do that again?

Not always, Sony's announcement in 2007 of 2 million PS2s sold for the Benelux was sold to consumers. They congratulated the (estimated) 2 millionth PS2 owner (in Amsterdam) complete with media coverage.

Ever heard of PR stunts? I can guarantee you 1 thing, that PS2 was not exactly the 2 millionth sold PS2 in the Benelux.

I will believe it when I see it from other sources. Every single freaking time we go through this.

So how is it being Bodhesatva?

I don't know why this happens every time.  :banghead:

Of course that's why I stated "estimated", they probably calculated that on that day they would reach 2 million units sold around that time and waited for the next customer, the 2 millionth unit may well have been sold in Brussel or Luxembourgh.

PS3 vs 360 sales

This thread isn't going to end well!

I'd be suprised if Sony were reporting 1 million sell through, shipped seems more likely otherwise our numbers for Dec / Jan are very low (which I don't think they are).

Will be good, as ever with Sony-related PR, to get some clarification on what exactly this is referring to...

In you we trust to figure it out ;)

PS: Isn't it too high even for shipped numbers (comparing to vgc)?

Console reaches milestone as ChartTrack confirms PS3 has outsold 360 for last month

SCE UK has confirmed to MCV that PS3 has sold a million units in the UK since its launch on March 23rd.

ChartTrack has also revealed that the Sony console has been outselling 360 for the last month. “It has been outselling 360 for the last four weeks, but they were neck and neck over the Christmas period, weeks 49-52,” said ChartTrack director Dorian Bloch.

The charts authority also confirmed that PS3 is to hit a million UK sales faster than its predecessor PS2.

Actually they could be 200k units off and nobody would notice.

@Kamil: It does look like PS3 should be above 900k already in the UK by now, although an official statement by chart-track when PS3 crosses the 1M units would be nice.

How can you read that and think it confirms undertracking? Chart Track says that the PS3 "is to hit" 1 million faster than the PS2. That would mean it hasn't yet.

There are obligations to investors. They can easily determine how many units they shipped and at what rate retailers are buying new units. Also GfK performs tracking for the Benelux.

I don't think Chart Track makes such announcements, they sell the data to those interested.

PS3 vs 360 sales

Well, at least one thing seems to be confirmed by Chart Track. They clearly state that, since the holidays,  the PS3 has been outselling the 360 in the UK while during the holidays they were tied.

VGChartz Hardware data for the period 09th Dec 2007 to 30th Dec 2007:

ConsolePS3X360
UK
220,623
274,454

and

VGChartz Hardware data for the period 06th Jan 2008 to 10th Feb 2008:

ConsolePS3X360
UK
94,399
109,914

Seems VGC has the 360 ahead by too much. Either 360 needs to be adjusted down or the PS3 needs to be adjusted up.

At least, it hasn't hit by their standards -- which are sold-to-consumers. It has hit that mark by Sony's standard, though.
