Forums - Microsoft - Penello On X1 DRM: “We Never Got A Chance To Have A Rational Conversation About What We Were Trying To Do"

Not throwing money away on a lease or pay per view model where all my thousands of dollars spent leave me with $0 tangible value. I buy something, I own it. Period.

Digital is fine if I can play it any time, anywhere, and sell it at a yard sale 10 years later when I'm done with it.

Translation: "all the great stuff you wanted will come back eventually but we can't confirm what or when because in fact this is just bullshitting designed to sell you on vague featuresets that will never exist"

The only rational thing MS ever talked about regarding the DRM was the removal of it. Consumers wanted a choice and MS' vision wasn't giving them that. I'm sure they could implement their vision of no disc swapping, family share, game trial etc on the digital side of things. Leave the Disc based DRM and Online check in completely out of the equation.

I love how they just want you to walk away from thousands of dollars when you decide to sell your Xbox or cancel your account...

$60 games are not 99 cent mp3s or $3 movies.  If digital is ever going to take off, it either needs to have a tangible value on the free market or the price of games needs to drop SUBSTANTIALLY to reflect the disposable model they desire so much.

Which of course won't happen because the whole goal of taking $60 games digital and restricting them so much is nothing but a "more money for less product that you have to buy over and over" cash grab.  They want $0 value intangible disposable games that you aren't supposed to care about when you cancel your account but they want you to pay $60 per game and accumulate $1000s of dollars in game purchases.  Yeah no.

Watching many of the videos that came out today about the Xbox One functionality solidified for me one thing. I will not by purchasing physical disks. Dont know why I didnt realize it before, but with how awesome the switching between apps and games that the Xbox One is it would really be disrupted by Xbox play Dead Rising 3 and instead of simply switching to Dead Rising 3 the Xbox One would stop and say "Insert Disc". So we are done with physical disks.

I wish i had a fast enough connection to DL >30gigs per game in a reasonable time with enough space to hold the dozen. (Hundreds) of games i own

They had the whole E3 to start the conversation and at least 1 month after that before they did the 180, why the hell didn't they start the conversation

Bet reminder: I bet with Tboned51 that Splatoon won't reach the 1 million shipped mark by the end of 2015. I win if he loses and I lose if I lost.

Yup, I'm with you on that 100% and bring on this digital future.

I LOVE paying for Xbox Live! I also love that my love for it pisses off so many people.

It really annoys me when M$ tries to talk it off as the consumer's fault. How the heck is it the consumer's fault that M$ couldn't tell their head from their ass when they first revealed the Xbone? Every person in the company had a different story to tell about the console. It was utterly confusing.

Also, if M$ really truly believed that their original strategy with the Xbone was industry defining and would cause people to realise its awesomeness once it was fully conceived, then why did they change it? Why not keep going with the amazing policies and surprise everyone with the future of gaming? If M$ as a company had so little faith in their own policies to change them at a moment's notice, then why should any consumer believe in them either?

They had their chance to communicate their "vision". Yet when people asked in depth questions it turned out that it really was more of a vague "vision" rather then the well thought out plan it should have been when they presented it.
The next time they should make sure they cover all the bases, yet manage to clearly define this plan in few simple sentences rather than creating a monster of "restrictions" and "permissions". That's the last thing people want in their "console experience".

Oh it's perfectly possible to avoid disc swapping and installing. Could even enforce an online check ONLY for installed to the HDD. Get to have your physical discs that play anywhere anytime with no restrictions that have a tangible value, and/or you get to install the discs to the HDD or download the digital copy and require check in online if you desire.

But it was my way or the highway, they threw a fit and took their ball home with them basically and took the good with the bad instead of just giving people what they want.
