Forums - Nintendo - Before the Wii U launched, how successful did you think it´d be a year later?

Well, I thought it has sold more than the Vita (recent post) so it's upwards of 6 million now? If that's the case then, it's doing better than the X360 but not as well as the Wii or the PS3. If those are the numbers then they are doing what I expected, and perhaps a bit better.

If it's really the low numbers, sub 4 million, that are in the charts, then it's not doing that well.

I think they missed a few marks on launch with sub 1080 game (really a Mario game shouldn't be that hard to render.) And when Ubisoft pulled out Raymond Legends I figured they were in worse trouble than we realized.

Still, I think many will not like the 2nd screen of the tablet as you have to switch your eyes off the main screen. Not great to do in an action sequence.

Really not sure I see any point of Consol over PC's since Kinect, Wii and other alternative ways to play have been abandoned.

Top 50 'most fun' game list coming soon!

Tell me a funny joke!

I thought it was going to be a huge sucess and more powerfull than PS3 and 360, with very superior ports and everything.
When people said it was not, I was shocked.

Well, it is more powerful than PS3 and 360, that's a fact. And it also has had superior ports of many games, including Tekken Tag 2, Ninja Gaiden 3, Need for Speed, in some respects arguably Batman Arkham City, RE Revelations, Rayman Legends, and from what I understand, both ACIV and Watchdogs are superior ports over PS360 as well. So in that respect, you thought right.

It just hasn't been a huge success as yet, mainly on the back of so few titles releasing in 2013. If not for that, it might well be a big success right now.

@yvanjean

"Nintendo struggle are self inflicted, they cut down the hardware to the point of making the WiiU so under-powered that it barely outperform the current gen Xbox 360 and PS3."

Again, sorry, but that statement is totally false. The system is not underpowered, it just isn't super-powerful like the PS4. The CPU doesn't blow minds, but the GPU by all accounts is very strong and perfectly capable of running any modern graphic tricks. And you really can't make a false statement like "it can barely outperform current gen 360 and PS3", when the only "proof" you're obviously basing that on, are a bunch of a quick-buck ports that the developers obviously didn't put much serious time and money into to MAKE them better and MAKE them really take advantage of Wii U's hardware (with the exception of Criterion and Need For Speed). Why not wait to see ACTUAL efforts made with the Wii U hardware, not just cheap ports, to make a final judgement on what you deem to be pitiful hardware? It is almost a guarantee that there will be games within Wii U's lifetime that are just as impressive, graphically and otherwise, as PS4 and Xbox One. If Wii's hardware could produce games like Metroid Prime 3, Mario Galaxy and Xenoblade, then Wii U is certainly capable of producing some impressive stuff.

he said VERY superior he probably meant he thought it would be closer to PS4 Xbone, than it currently is. Hell i thought the same thng. As of now its closer to PS360, even if it is more powerful.

i thought it wouldve sell like 10 million in first year :( my forecast is wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyy off....

i am not sure if mk8 or ssb can save wii u.. i mean gc also had those games and look at the result

To be perfectly fair, Double Dash was a serious mis-step for the Mario Kart franchise. Like Mario Sunshine and Wind Waker, it has it's ardent fans, but on the whole DD is considered to be a lesser entry. MK8 is the first MK in quite some time to truly look fresh and like they're really putting forth a huge effort into it, and I think it will have a hell of a lot more buzz surrounding it near release than DD did, DD being a game that justifiably got a "what the hell is that?" reaction from many people.I also think that since Mario Kart DS and Wii, the MK franchise has become a lot more popular in the mainstream than it was before DD released.

As for Smash Bros., people were excited for Melee, and it was a great game that didn't (at the time) disappoint, but again, it was a sequel to an N64 title that was more of a sleeper hit, a curiosity than anything. Brawl really took the popularity and anticipation of the series to new heights, and I think the franchise is much more "visible" now than it was before Melee's release. Meaning there are a lot more people likely to buy a Wii U just to play the new Smash next year, than there were who bought a GC just for Melee.

So yes, I do think those two games will impact sales in a very positive way. But let's not forget X, and Bayonetta, SMT x Fire Emblem, and most importantly, "Zelda U", which is bound to be that kind of "centerpiece" title that really shows off the system's muscle, and wows people, just as Ocarina of Time and Twilight Princess once did. It's not really a matter of one or two games "Saving" the console. It's a matter of building up a libarary of quality game after quality game, adding up more reasons for someone to want to buy the system in the first place.

here's the drawback for SSB.... it has a 3DS version....

it would drastically hurt the sale of the game and the system esp in the non existing market in japan....

i just hope wii u will survive, i myself thinking to ditch wii u and go for the ps4

this i can only speak for myself, but if the 3ds version is close to the WIi U one that will give me alot less incentive to buy a Wii U. Hell im sure im not the only one that feels that way

It depends what you mean by close. If you're talking graphically they won't be close at all but on other fronts Sakurai said both versions will have the same characters, some stages will be exclusive to one version or the other but overall gameplay wise both games will be very close.

Signature goes here!

Putting SSB on the 3DS was a very bad move. It's a shame, because it's probably too late to cancel it now.

it looks like a decision that nintendo subtly said.... we can't patch the wound of wii u but let's just make the most of it by selling a port in 3ds that has a HUGE potential to sell more and more $$

I always knew it would sell 30M lifetime since the gamepad gimmick wasn't clear or good enough and the hardware is dated.

30M?

100th year plan?

Proud to be the first cool Nintendo fan ever

Number ONE Zelda fan in the Universe

DKCTF didn't move consoles

Prediction: No Zelda HD for Wii U, quietly moved to the succesor

Predictions for Nintendo NX and Mobile

I always thought the consoles sales were going to be poor. Soon as i seen it i Just knew people would not want it. I was more shocked by how much it sold when it first release, but i knew the sales would drop off.

Nobody's perfect. I aint nobody!!!

Killzone 2. its not a fps. it a FIRST PERSON WAR SIMULATOR!!!! ..The true PLAYSTATION 3 launch date and market dominations is SEP 1st

With the Wii U, I admit I didn´t know what to think, had mixed feelings, didn´t think it´d do well as the Wii did in its first year, but never imagined it´d be selling below the GC...guess most people feel that way?

Exactly my feelings. They haven't even been able to properly differentiate the Wii U from the Wii, even things like announcing Nintendo Land were confusing to me the first days at E3, I thought it was a built in app like Streetpass Mii Plaza at first. And New Super Mario Bros. U isn't really the console seller like it was the christmas of 09 when NSMB Wii launched.

I just hope they announce a Metroid in the style of Prime next year... and that Tropical Freeze is just a quick project from Retro, even though it is unlikely of course. Still it would not be a huge console seller for the masses, but for "core" gamers (don't like that word but you know what I mean), it would be epic.

Yep.
