As I mentioned last week I'm putting the tourneys on hold until the World Cup is over. Too few people seem to be interested in doing them, but I'll take back over when it finishes/when there's more demand.

Five Nintendo Games that were basically Vaporware before being released.
Somethimes, games can be developed pretty quickly. Other times, they can take a few years. And then there is the dreaded vaporware game, which is in development forever! Today, I thought I'd look back at five of the more notable cases of vaporware in Nintendo history. Note that since the definition of vaporware is a bit ambiguous, you might argue that one or two of these games don't count. I disagree, but whatever. Also, note that games like Resident Evil 4 and Conker's Bad Fur Day didn't make the cut since they are 3rd party and owned by Microsoft nowadays respectively.
1. Pikmin 3

Development for Pikmin 3 was confirmed as early as E3 2008, about four years after Pikmin 2 and five years before its eventual release in 2013. Originally slated to be a Wii game, it kept on being mentioned as part of Miyamoto's schedule up through E3 2012, when the game was finally shown to the public for the first time. Even then though, Pikmin 3 was not confirmed to be a luanch title, only a "launch window" title. This naturally meant about 8 months after launch. What we eventually got was a great action-strategy game, but one that felt it was made with the Wii in mind, what with the emphasis on Wiimote controls and some not particulary impressive textures here and there.
2. Kirby's Air Ride

Released in the summer of 2003, midway through the life of the GameCube, Kirby Air Ride was actually announced back in the mid-90's, meant as an early N64 title! It then went underground for half a decade or so before re-emerging only in early 2003, but was playable by E3. Masahiro Sakurai quit his job after the creation of Kirby Air Ride, apparently tired of being pressured into making sequels. Naturally, he has since gone on to direct two Smash Bros games, another Kirby, and a Kid Icarus reboot.
3. Mother 3

Mother 3 was originally in development for the SNES, and was meant to be a swansong RPG for the system like Persona 4 was for the PS2 over a decade later. It was then moved to the N64, where it was then named Earthbound 64. Years later, the game was finally released for the Game Boy Advance... about a year and a half after the DS was released. So yeah, this game was Nintendo's Duke Nukem Forever. Only instead of being universally reviled, it is today considered one of the greatest games never to leave Japan, and is in my opinion the best on-Pokemon RPG ever to come out of Nintendo.
4. Kirby's Return to Dreamland

After Kirby 64, HAL Laboratory immediately began development of another Kirby game for the then-upcoming GameCube. The game spent five years in development hell before finally being shown at E3 2005, with a release date of later that year. It was then cancelled due to programming difficutlies. However, the game remained in the works, boiling away, for years. Finally, Return to Dreamland was shown in early 2011, and after over a decade of development, there was a new Kirby for Nintendo's home console market. Return to Dream Land is generally not considered revolutionary, but did famously melt the heart of reviewer Jim Sterling enough to give it a perfect 10/10.
5. Pokemon Generation 1

Sure, it may not have been in development hell for as long as Kirby or Mother 3, but those at least had the excuse of being major console games. Pokemon was a monochrome handheld game. It started development in 1991, and was not released until 1996. That was a long development time for most games of the era, let alone a handheld experience! What makes this all the more amazing is that unlike the above games, Pokemon was not some proven success. It was a risky bet for Game Freak and Nintendo, and could have easily failed. But the stars aligned, and by the end of the decade, Pokemon nearly replaced Mario as Nintendo's chief IP.
Well, at least waiting was totally worth it for 4 out of those 5 Nintendo games!
