Forums - Gaming - JRPG Fans I Need Some Advice

I can definitely vouch for Resonance of Fate. Great battle system and amazing soundtrack, good characters and unique setting. The story is minimalistic but still decent.

Ishiki mentioned that the battle system doesn't change but I think that's missing the point. What makes battles in RoF unique throughout is the different battlefields, the types of enemies, and enemy placements. Every RPG gets repetitive at some point yet despite the criticisms of RoF being repetitive, I'd honestly say RoF has more unique encounters than a lot of RPGs. Unfortunately some people can't really see that...

Be sure to try it at some point.

When you play it... RoF just feels repetitive to many. Partially due to the story going nowhere. Partially to the environments looking exactly the same. Whilst there are probably more unique battles (armor placements, etc). there's also more generic long battles in succession that you must play to play the more unique battles. These generic battles become worse because there aren't any new things added to the battlesystem with many using the same arena's or tactics. Wherea's most JRPG's throw  new forks or abilities in along the way for you to play with or cover them p with better pacing.

If you cut out a lot of the fluff and adjusted progression accordingly it would be a much better game.

As it stands imo, It's definetly a very unique good game to play for a while, and if for some reason you don't get bored it remains a good game for longer.

I hear you. JRPGs burn you out so it's hard to play them all. Out of that list I'd say objectively, Last Story and Eternal Sonata. I personally love FFX13-2, but many hated it. The rest are meh to me, or not worth that much time unless you are REALLY into JRPGs. I quit Blue Dragon on Disc 3, and I never finished Star Ocean.

Do you plan on getting both consoles at launch? Judging by your post and games listed, you have both systems. Are you planning on putting one away? Selling one? I mean the next gen consoles are going to have droughts, so you can always come back to them.

I'd like to add Lost Odyssey (my favorite JRPG this gen), Ni No Kuni, Tales of Symphonia Chronicles, Xillia, Xillia 2, Graces F----> Anything tales of :D

I never get consoles at launch, Ill probably get a PS4 next year, my backlog is 30+ games so I need time to widdle that down.  I'd like to finish my current gen backlog before I get a next gen console but that's wishful thinking.  I tend to buy every console in a generation so I never have any droughts of games lol.

This was my whole argument for defending the Wii U's lack of games, lol. I have a 360, PS3, Vita, and 3DS. I know no droughts! I'm in your same boat for backlog, but it's not mostly JRPGs. My JRPG backlog is The Last Story, Xenoblade Chronicles, Xillia, Xillia 2, and Symphonia Chronicles.

So basically I've realised there is no way I can play all the JRPGs I want from this gen, my backlog is just too big and its getting out of control and a large portion of the games are JRPGs that are gonna take a long time to beat.  So basically I wanted to list off the games I'm on the fence about and you guys could tell me which ones I have to play.  Btw I'm getting all the games probably soon because the gen is coming to an end and games are cheaper than they ever wil be.

The Last Story (My biggest issue with this game was it was bit on the short side, but otherwise I liked it alot. I liked the battle system. I hope Mistwalker and Nintendo team up again on Wii U.)

Resonance of Fate (Haven't played, been thinking of picking it up myself at some point)

Star Ocean: The Last Hope (Is there a difference between PS3 and 360 versions?) (Own it for 360. Don't bother. Game isn't very good)

Eternal Sonata (Difference between PS3 and 360 versions?) (Own it for 360, I found the game extremely underwhelming. Great concept. Good battle system. Poor execution. It also has only one real side quest)

Pandora's Tower (Own it. It's in my back log. Can't say how good it is yet)

FF XIII-2 (I don't like the XIII games. I can't recommend them)

Hyperdimension Neptunia (haven't played)

White Knight Chronicles 2 (haven't played)

Bue Dragon (Solid game. It won't blow you away.)

Rune Factory Frontier (haven't played)

Rune Factory: Tides of Destiny (haven't played)

If there's any that I missed that are really good let me know, if its a popular game that I missed then that probably means I already own it, thanks!

Well I hope what opinions I have help you out.

Dragon's Dogma, no other JRPG comes close.

Dragons dogma hardly qualifies as a JRPG. It a competely different kind of RPG more akin to open world dungeon crawler with loads of micro management and light on story.

I dont think the average jrpg fan that expects a story heavy and character heavy game would be pleased with DD.

You likely haven't played Nier and that's better than everything on the list.

Nier is an RPG O_o?  I thought it was an action game.

It's combat is action based, but you still get experience, you still level up. There's a ton of side quests, weapons, and spells to unlock/collect. The story is fantastic and the game is completely story-driven.

Its a drakenguard game^

Kinda like what Tecmo Koei did with Ninja Gaiden then turned it into Warriors Orochi and stick it up in Dead or Alive

Sept its not REALLY a JRPG.

Avoid Hyperdimension Neptunia, it's a waste of time IMO

Last Story is a must

The last Story is my fave game this generation.
Blue Dragon is great as well. Just take a Dragon Quest game and add a little more personality. great game.

Pandoras Tower is more like Castlevania

Star Ocean I would go with the PS3 version extra content and only one disc.  Eternal Sonata is a toss up PS3 version has extra content but no trophies versus achievemts.  Blue Dragon is meh I would skip it but it can be beasten pretty quickly but you can waist a lot of time on it if you go for most or all the achievements.  The rest of the games you listed I have no clue about.  Also if you haven't played Infinite Undiscovery I would get that instead of Blue Dragon the only thing I liked slightly more about Blue Dragon is the music everything else is better in Undiscovery and the only major gripe I have about the game is that you can only control one character.  But it does everything else pretty good and on top of that it has no load times which is rare for a disc based JRPG I actually can't think of another disc based one that has no load times.
