Forums - Sales - Why do people think so highly of Wii Sports sales?

The game comes with the system. I don't understand why people think that 80+ million people just got up and bought Wii Sports because they thought it was amazing.

Currently own:

  • Ps4

Currently playing: Witcher 3, Walking Dead S1/2, GTA5, Dying Light, Tomb Raider Remaster, MGS Ground Zeros

The ones thinking highly of it are the loyalists of the system it was released on. No one else brings it up during discussions.

The game, in combination with the Wii Remote, was amazing.

Why do you think the Wii was sold out for Months on end and breaking records? Because people wanted to play Wii Sports.

It wouldnt have sold as well without the bundle, obviously, but as far as system sellers go, Wii Sports is arguably the biggest system selling game of all time. It deserves recognition.

Mostly because people didn't buy the wii for a wii, they bought it for this game.

It doesn't matter if game is bundeled or not, as long as people buy the bundle for the game the sales still count in my book.

It only sold the Wii to the casuals. The definition of a system seller.

Game of the year 2017 so far:

5. Resident Evil VII
4. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
3. Uncharted: The Lost Legacy
2. Horizon Zero Dawn
1. Super Mario Odyssey

japan never had it on the bundle and it was substituted by mario kart in 2010. still it sold really good separetely and it also sold many people on wii.

It deserves what people think.

It sold the wii to gamers. any gamer from the 90's always dreamed of motion controls.

never once seen someone who has brang up wii sports sales as a serious counter argument

I'm not the biggest Nintendo fan, but I can't think of too many games where *millions* of people paid $249 to play them. Without Wii Sports, I'm not sure the Wii would have sold half of what it did, because it was such a simple yet brilliant and fun way of explaining what motion controls were about.

Normally I'd agree with you if we were talking about normal game pack-ins (Wii Play is definitely one I'd argue shouldn't be counted in any sort of gaming sales success type argument) but Wii Sports is different. Not many games single handedly sell a system, but its one of the biggest and so its sales shouldn't be discounted.

The biggest (and best, marketing-wise) system seller of all time. Period.

By the way, not all Wiis sold in the world were bundled with it. Today, most bundles come either with Mario Kart or New Super Mario Bros and it´s quite rare to find an original Wii Sports bundle. Even so the game STILL sells and it´s not uncommon to see it among the 40 weekly best selleers
