Valve is still too dependent on Windows to make major Steambox exclusives. Don't think that'll change anytime soon.

They need it to be though.  They need it to be the killer app for their console.

Personally, I think their console aspirations are pretty much "hopes & Dreams", but if they really mean business, then that's exactly what they'll do.....make it exclusive.

Whether they do or not will be a test of how serious they are about this Steambox or not.

I understand the argument, but not putting Half Life 3 on Windows means they could potentially pass on hundreds of millions of dollars. Maybe they'll skip consoles for a year, but not Windows.

Not bringing HL3 to Windows would also piss off much of their fanbase.

I wonder if Half-Life will be only on Steambox.

I'd say it's most likely to be a "steam" exclusive, so you can still get it on stranded steam, just won't be available on the traditional consoles. While having HL3 as a Steam machines exclusive would probably benefit their sales (dat hype) it would piss off an awful lot of the current steam community, which would likely do more damage than good. Plus, having it only available on steam would help pull more people over to the service. Once you have them hooked on that, getting them to move over to Steam OS or buy a Steam Machine becomes a lot easier.

I think they pose a legitimate threat to Sony and MS. (I don't see them taking everyone by storm, but gaining a decent market share over the next few years is very possible).

I agree with this 100%.

HL2 and HL2:EP1 were both Steam exclusives until Orange Box, so they don't really need to pull many of the fans over to Steam. They do however want to push people to SteamOS and HL3 would be a good start.

Remember when HL2 forced every owner to use Steam to play? Everyone was mad at first, but they got over it and ended up making Valve very rich. They could pull off doing the same again.

Not necessarily so bad, though: they could ship Steam OS exclusives with a quick and easy installer to turn existing Windows machines into Win/SteamOS dual-boot ones.

Assuming Valve is confident they can do that without making WIndows malfunction. That might piss some people off.

Preferably, I'd like to be able to boot Steam OS off a USB stick or disc. From there, it would be able to access the HDD for storage. Some versions of Linux do that.

Good idea. I, for one, prefer dual-boot, but making both options available would be the best, making as many people as possible happy.

Making a console is a painful process.

What does that mean?

Take NAUGHTY DOG, for example.....Don't you think Naughty Dog would love to put some of their games on the PC for more to play?  Maybe a phone or tablet?  I'm sure that some of those gamers would absolutely love the chance.

But no, they can't.  Because that's the whole point and incentive for those people to buy a PS3......it's a game of keep away-incentive....it's a painful game, but a necessary one.

If Valve is really serious about getting into the console game, then they too must be willing to go through this pain.  If they aren't ready or willing to get dirty, then they might as well stay home.

HALF LIFE is a bonafide KILLER APP, and Valve must be willing to hurt the PC community with HALF LIFE 3 in order for their  console aspirations to have a realistic chance for success.  A necessary evil.  I'm just curious if Valve actually has the balls to do what's needed and necessary to be done.

We'll see.

Winning requires pain.

Valve isn't trying to get into the console game business. They're competing with console gaming via PCs. As they always have but now with their own OS.

I assume Valve is pumping a massive amount of money into HL3 and I don't think it'll be a Steam OS exclusive.

Yeah....that's trying to get into the console business, bro.

Valve's wanted to get into it for a long time.
