I'd say it's most likely to be a "steam" exclusive, so you can still get it on stranded steam, just won't be available on the traditional consoles. While having HL3 as a Steam machines exclusive would probably benefit their sales (dat hype) it would piss off an awful lot of the current steam community, which would likely do more damage than good. Plus, having it only available on steam would help pull more people over to the service. Once you have them hooked on that, getting them to move over to Steam OS or buy a Steam Machine becomes a lot easier. I think they pose a legitimate threat to Sony and MS. (I don't see them taking everyone by storm, but gaining a decent market share over the next few years is very possible). |
HL2 and HL2:EP1 were both Steam exclusives until Orange Box, so they don't really need to pull many of the fans over to Steam. They do however want to push people to SteamOS and HL3 would be a good start.
Remember when HL2 forced every owner to use Steam to play? Everyone was mad at first, but they got over it and ended up making Valve very rich. They could pull off doing the same again.
