Assuming Valve is confident they can do that without making WIndows malfunction. That might piss some people off.

Preferably, I'd like to be able to boot Steam OS off a USB stick or disc. From there, it would be able to access the HDD for storage. Some versions of Linux do that.

Good idea. I, for one, prefer dual-boot, but making both options available would be the best, making as many people as possible happy.
