Forums - Microsoft - Microsoft’s Spencer on Xbox One Demand

the usual corporate BS nothing new here apart from hiding the true figure which Microsoft are very good at

"...the best way to prepare [to be a programmer] is to write programs, and to study great programs that other people have written. In my case, I went to the garbage cans at the Computer Science Center and fished out listings of their operating system." - Bill Gates (Microsoft Corporation)

"Hey, Steve, just because you broke into Xerox's house before I did and took the TV doesn't mean I can't go in later and take the stereo." - Bill Gates (Microsoft Corporation)

Bill Gates had Mac prototypes to work from, and he was known to be obsessed with trying to make Windows as good as SAND (Steve's Amazing New Device), as a Microsoft exec named it. It was the Mac that Microsoft took for its blueprint on how to make a GUI.

""Windows [n.] - A thirty-two bit extension and GUI shell to a sixteen bit patch to an eight bit operating system originally coded for a four bit microprocessor and sold by a two-bit company that can't stand one bit of competition.""

Anybody remember last year when Reggie was on the news saying that the Wii U demand was so high and that you couldn't find it anywhere. If you see it you better buy it? I think it was Leo-J that made it his mission to show that the Wii U was readily available to anyone that wanted to buy it. I say trust no one.

sales number don't really matter (they do but it's just one element)... profit margin and attached rate and services sold is where it is at and at that game I think MS is in a better position than Sony even with a lower sale number... at 500 bucks they probably don't lose much money if any and they are really good at monetizing the XBL service and apps and all.... I wouldn't be surprised that this time again XB will be more profitable for MS and even devs even if they end up third in sales....

but we'll see, this gen will really be interesting, at least for people that care about those numbers and all... because the race will be way closer all things considered than last gen between PS/XB

You are correct, as it stands now reports are Microsoft will about break even with every Xbox One console sold.  Sony was hoping and planned to do that, but with the falling of the yen, have warned their investors they will be losing a little wih every console.  The more the sell, the more they lose (short term). Tough break for Sony.

I think there is a big difference this time, and that is the fight for subscription money. I suspect that if Sony outsell MS by a large figure, this will significantly damage MS's profitibility in the long run. I know many people hated Sony going down the paid route, but in terms of after year 1 - more money will be returned due to subscriptions than console profits I feel.

Because of that perhaps Sony is prepared to take a loss initially and make the money back through subscriptions. One off hit, you get more console sales, you make more in the long run.

Every indication we have shows that the PS4's pre-orders are greatly outnumbering the One's, because of both demand and supply.  The real reason they didn't throw out a number is because it would make them look bad in comparison to Sony's 1M+.  I'd be surprised if they have even reached 500K at this point.  For you and MB1025 to even suggest that Sony is lying about that number shows you guys are really reaching for straws.

@MB1025

They officially said over 1 million preorders at Gamescom.  It was Yoshida, a few weeks later, in an interview that said millions.  So, either they have hit 2M preorders since Gamescom, or Yoshida mispoke and they are probably closer to 1.5M.  Either way, it will be well above MS's preorders at this point.  And Sony is going to have enough supply to meet those preorders, and then some.  In the end, I wouldn't be surprised if we see a ~1M gap this year alone between the PS4 and One.

You believe everything Sony says I bet lol. I was pointing out that some believe everything Sony says but nothing MS says. 500k ok dude I guess you're throwing around your numbers to. I basically asked nothing but why believe one but not the other if they tossed a number. GTFO with that reaching for straw shit. I didn't say nor do I give predictions on anything.

You are reaching for straws, though.  It's quite sad, but you're accusing Sony of lying about an actual number, not some PR jargin (which MS keeps giving). Again, an ACTUAL number.  One that can be proven or disproven.  And if Sony was lying, not only would they look a fool to customers, but more importantly, to their investors.

Yeah it is quite sad that you believe everything a company tells you. I'm not accusing them of lying I'm saying why believe one but not the other. You know put the shoe on the other foot type thing. I haven't said once that Sony is lying but you have intimated that you dont/wouldnt believe anything MS says. I asked why that is. I know why you don't though and yes it is quite sad for you.

Would you like some more yummie delicous candy?

Really not sure I see any point of Consol over PC's since Kinect, Wii and other alternative ways to play have been abandoned.

Lol, who says I believe EVERYTHING Sony says.  I understand when they are just speaking PR and when they are not.  And when they give a specific number, that is not PR jargin.  The reason we know that MS would be lying if they came up with a number that is "one more" than Sony is there is nothing to back it up.  Everything points to PS4 demand being higher.  Plus, we already know that MS is having supply issues, and therefore is allowing fewer preorders, while Sony is not.

Good news for the xbone then.

If you have less pre-orders, you are unlikely to be upfront and say you have less pre-orders. I wouldnt expect *any* company to do that. Because it's an image thing, hey look our competitor has a cheaper machine and has many more pre-orders than us... pretty silly thing for them to do :)

What i do find interesting is that they have obviously already conceded they have lost Christmas/Early-mid next year and are targeting further on next year (this may be because of the initial price/bad Pr/lack of availability of product).

They will probably launch a Halo at end of 2014 by the sounds of things and they would of course expect a rise in sales because of that (MS have a knack (pardon the pun) to do well at Christmas time, especially in the USA). *But* I do expect Sony to counter their Halo with an Uncharted 4. Which will also help Sony's console figures. The difference this time is that Sony do seem to be standing on two feet this time rather than wobbling a lot all over the place. I think it's going to be a harder battle for MS this time around.

Not to wish my life away, but the Christmas battle next year could be interesting :) - though i am more interested i getting a Uncharted 4 or Alan Wake 2 :|
