Minimum wage is not enough to live off of today.

Fast food workers, retail workers.  There are some people working these shitty jobs (somebody has to do them) and yes, I believe they deserve more for what they do.  Some are very hard workers.

For some people, it is the only option they have.
Getting an education is expensive as hell.

how many numbers out there are DECENT job?

after choosing between unemployment or indecent job... they will realize they will earn enough with flipping burger.... with less stress....

look at the unemployment rate esp for new grads.... and the rate that they are earning.... not so far away from 15$

a good example is a popular course in college which is BS Psych (if they can find a job) has a median of 35k.... either lower or greater.... at $15 you can earn almost 30k a year (roughly with a median of 28k)

so yeah we will see a lot of degree holder flipping burger

I'm only using the $15 example because that seems to be the number on topic.  Realistically (and historically) it should be around 9 - 10 and tied to inflation.  Tying it to inflation is something corporations would hate, but it could help stabilize things over the long term, rather than having a constant back and forth battle.  But as I've said, the wage itself isn't as big of a problem as the fact that it's the most common type of job to be found.  That is a bad sign for the future of our economy, the continued proliferation of low-wage jobs.

It's a good thing, these fast food companies make huge profits, it's time for it to reach the workers. What do shareholders and bosses do exactly to deserve what they get?

it wouldn't matter if all the good manufacturing and service jobs had stayed in the country.

Own and run a company where a product is in high demand and labor is in low demand.

Low skill wages are paid low for a reason, lets take a simplistic abstract example.

Say you've got two companies of 3 workers each.

They each send out mass emails via button press.

One is the owner, who has put up the money for the company,  One is the manager and a third is a guy who presses a button.

One company is far more successful then the other because the owner put up more money, and the Manager got better deals per click.

The guys pressing the buttons are doing the exact same thing, just as well as each other.

Why would the guy who pushes buttons for the richer company be paid significantly more.  Espeically when there are 8 guys out there willing to push buttons for the same price?

Say the successful company gets bigger, they add a second button pusher.  The manager gets a big raise (rightfully) for expanding buisness so much.  That makes sense right?

The problem with low skill jobs is just that.  They're low skill, so those workers don't really contribute as much to the companies profits as they make even now.

All a raise in wages might change is an increase in automation.  Since a lot of the fast food industry coould be a lot more automized, it just doesn't make sense at the moment wage wise.   I mean heck, your from Europe, you should know more then anybody.

In europe they have Automats and a LOT more "Self order" screens where you place your own order by computer.

All those fat cats talk about trickle down economics like it's something great and yet they keep the wealth for themselves.

Seriously if a company is extremely successful, then those who work for it not just the boss, should get paid better as a reward for doing so well. Everyone who works for a company plays their part in helping a company to do well, all the boss does is own it. He or she would be no where without all the workers they hired, they need to stop taking the piss. And if the company does bad, EVERYONE earns less as an incentive to do better. Currently, all that happens is that some workers lose their jobs while there bosses get richer yet, they get away with their mistakes and seem to get rewarded for it with bonuses. It's not good enough.

Companies need to be economically, socially and enviromentally responsible for their actions and impact on society. All i see right now is just pure greed. Stuff like automation and outsourcing of jobs just proves it. They get away with paying little for an African or a Chinese person (or anyone else in the developing world) to do the same thing and don't have to pay a machine at all as it's non-living being.  i don't think thats right.

Also, funily enough when the "good industries" all get outsourced, it's low skill jobs or high skill jobs which require decrees that remain, there's no in between. So it's not suprising that many people must rely either on government benefits or on a low paid job. Had we (most of the western world) kept most of our manufacturing industries like Germany did, the low paid and low skill jobs would mostly be for the young who could live on it, not adults who need far better wages to live on. And the German economy has only kept it's manufacturing jobs thanks to government regulation and unions. These private companies would of left Germany had they had the chance and yet despite higher labour costs, companies like VW are very profitable.

While this is very long... you didn't actually provide any real arguements.

Why should someone who does the same job, just as well get paid more or less depending on how well other people do their job?

As for Germany... guess what Germany doesn't have.  Minimum Wage.

This is what I think of it:

That's a single price point.

If you look in PPP you find that you need to spend a dollar and a half in Australia for every dollar in the US.

Then you look at the difference in taxes paid...

Additionally when it comes to transnational corporations, their costs are... transnational.

People in the U.S. are not lazy. American workers are more productive than ever, and only the rich get compensated for that increase. The average worker, who is contributing more to the economy, has not seen their wage increase, inflation adjusted, for a very long time, while the top 20% is raking it in more than ever.  And that isn't fair.

Sure, keep beliving that if you want. I had the opportunity to live 6 years in the US. And i know what im talking about. But to each its own buddy. If people wanna have a great job with a good income, dont aim for minimum wage jobs. Those are not intended to make a living off.

And yet they are the most abundant job in the country!  There are more minimum wage jobs than there are high school students!  There are NOT as many good-paying jobs in this country as there are people trying to make a living and raise a family!

Also: keep believing what, exactly?  Those are cold, hard facts I was referring to, not some intangible belief.

I don't care that things could be worse, I want things to be BETTER!  Is that so wrong?  No, it's not.  Things CAN be better, things have been better before, so why shouldn't I want things to get better here?  Just because other places have it worse?  Heck no, I'm not going to say "oh well, we're not the worst place in the world, so we shouldn't try to improve."

Im not saying you should have it worse, or that is good cause other countrys are in a worse situation.im just saying that if you really want things to get better, you preapare yourself to do it. Not expect to happen out of nowhere. Go to school, study, prepare yourself, finish a career and go look for a good job. Dont stand there flipping burguers expecting to make more money than you deserve. Cause yes, you read it right, people working at Mcdonalds flipping burguers dont deserve more money than they are currently making. And thats a cold hard truth

And who are you to decide how much somebody else is worth?

If corporations had it their way, they'd still be paying them $2 an hour and people like you would still be saying they don't deserve more!  The problem is they will pay people as little as they can get away with and people will line up to defend them!

Says the guy trying to decide how much people are worth.

That's the thing, nobody decides how much a person is worth.   The market does in aggregation via supply and demand.  It's  the most accurate way to find true value.

and still none of that negates the fact that putting you money anywhere (other than your mattress) benefits everyone..

This is the worst argument.  How does rich people having money help everyone?  Wouldn't that same money, in the hands of MORE people, do MORE good?  The answer is, of course, YES!  It would better for businesses by creating more opportunites for expansion, for individuals who can support themselves and their families and work harder(as they feel more rewarded for their efforts!), for entrepreneurs and inventors and creators!

Income inequality benefits nobody but those at very top.  And even that is limited, because sooner or later the economic foundation that they have been systematically weakening is going to fail and it's all going to come crashing down.  Those at the top only have the furthest to fall.

lets see how being rich benefits everyone.

they put into into a bank. that bank now has more money that, they can use to expand their business, hire more people, they now have money to lend (this is how lending works). that money that rich person put in the bank is now loaned to you, so you can buy a house, car, start a business, etc.

the evil rich person puts his money in the stock market. The company he just invested in now has more capital, they can now do more research and development, expanding their business, which requires more employees.

that rich person uses his money to buy a cheeseburger, a flatscreen, a car or whatever. that money now goes to the campany that made the product, the company that sold the product, the company that distributed the product. those companies now stay in business and thrive because they have a product that is demanded, inorder to keep up wit demand, they hire people, they inovate, they sell more goods, putting more money in the economy.

the evil rich guys buys a McMansion. the builder has to hire construction workers, plumbers, floorers, drywall guys, painters, landscapers, etc

this is like economics 101 stuff. really basic. like I said in virtually every scenario other than stashing money hidden away in your home benefits everyone.

I understand that.  I understand all of that.  In the past I have made every conservative economic argument in the book!  I fully grasp these basic concepts.  And I've grown to see that it's not the best way of doing things.

I'm not saying rich people are bad.  I'm not saying their spending doesn't create economic activity.

What I'm saying is that wide income gaps are a detriment to society, and to the economy.

Exhibit A:  Corporations are making record profits but they are not expanding and hiring like all the conservatives said they would.  The problem: Companies expand and hire NOT because of the money they make, but because of the money the CAN make.  They will not expand or hire if the opportunity for growth is not there.  This is where income inequality comes into play.  As a portion of Americans see their expendable income shrinking from rising costs and flat wages, they don't have money to spend on non-necessities. Thus, economic growth opportunities are limited as a business's customer base spends less money.  A company doesn't open a store because they CAN, but because it's profitable.  And when the money is only the hands of a small portion of people, those opportunities simply aren't there.

Actually conservatives were saying companies WOULDN'T expand because stimulus boosted economies don't expand, because the boost is fake and companies are smart enough to know that.

If they want more money, they should prepare themselves to get a better job. Is minimum wage for a reason. They dont deserve a penny more thanthey get

I was working, for a couple dollars over minimum, with a guy who was making yet a couple dollars over me.  But even then he lamented how the job paid less than a job he was able to get right out of high school, decades ago.

Wake up!  This country is heading downhill fast!  College is more and more out of reach, families can't survive without help from the government!  We're in bad shape and pompous, out-of-touch, ill-informed attitudes like yours are only going to keep driving us into oblivion.

College is more and more out of reach?  There's been a HUGE Spike in college enrollment that's only been seen as dropping because the economy is getting better.

We're getting so many people enrolling Obama is trying to pass new plans to prevent so many people from getting student loans by limiting what colleges are elligable.

Georgia--where cops and teachers don't get paid crap.  Trust me on this.  Now, I'm sure the cost of living is lower than most bigger cities so everything's relative, I guess.  Maybe a New York cop or teacher has it a little better.  Around here, every cop has to work a second job.

As a employee at a fast food restaurant for over a year now, and a manager. I can firmly say that alot of you clearly are out of touch with the current economic situation.

Among the crew-members I manage about half of them graduated from college, are students, and or minors. The problem isn't that they should get low pay because they aren't skilled enough to earn more, it's that since minors get paid less than adults period, $7.40 just isn't acceptable wages for the line of work my employees are in.  i'm not sure if this goes for every fast food restaurant but the one I manage is downright hell. You get burned alot, it's A TON of hard physical labor under HARSH conditions, you don't get free meals, crew member get 25 hours a week, and to top it off, right now with the economy nobody in my area is really hiring.

I'm tired of seeing the whole, 'Work harder for a better paying job, get a degree" etc, speaking as if people with degrees aren't struggling at the moment as well. So per say you're underemployed, got a degree, went to a nice school and everything society requested of you...and you're stuck with 0 job opportunities. What do you tell those people? While I do agree the $15 a hour thing is humorous and overblown, I firmly believe that if a company doesn't want to cover the employees insurance, FINE, however if they're gonna give them short hours a  modest $1 - $2 in pay would definitely help, and make workers more enthusiastic, trust me, I'm a fucking manager and I only get paid $1 over minimuim wage. Job is stressful as shit and physically demanding and I hate it...but no other options at the moment as I'm still in school.

As a manager I also am responsible for putting up stock trucks...and let's just say our weekly stock comes up to 2k - 2.5k and our weekly payroll is 2.5k - 3k. Total revenue for one week averages out to $31,200. After paying other fees and utilities the restauraunt brings in 20K in profits, EASILY. And the people who literally RUN the business day in and day out get paid $8.50.

I don't know if any of you guys were managers before but it definitely does require skill, patience, and dedication. You're on call 24/7 you're in charge of handling labor, any food gets stolen you pay for it, customer complaints, health inspections, assessments, meetings, shortages, bosses...it's all pretty hectic and to put bluntly. I've worked better jobs, for MORE money, for LESS work.

The fast food industry is making a killing on underemployed people and minorities. If other entry level jobs can pay $8+++ then why the hell can't a fast food joint can't? To put simply it's greed, they don't care about the employees nor the economy, only the profits in the franchise owner's hands....I can't wait to quit this filthy industry to be honest.

Honestly, you should be able to use that expiernce to get a better management job.  I've known a lot of people who were fast food managers who make quite a bit of money.  Thouh you are in school so likely wouldn't want to.

Outside that, try negotiting a better wage, threaten to get another job.  If you are worth it... they'll pay you more.  Places won't just give you a raise.

If that doesn't work, threaten their workplae violations.  Hell  i'm pretty sure i've noticed two just in your post.

I think it's illegal in pretty much every state to deduct shortages and stolen items from wages.

Based on the 7.40... i'd guess you are working in Michigan?  In which case by law you need to give written consent EVERY time you have to pay for shortages or losses, and they legally aren't allowed to do anything to force you to do so.  If they fire you, or even threaten to, you can file a grievance.

(and even then it can never bring you below minium wage.)

I dunno, teachers seem to get paid Ok on average according to NEA.

52K Average salary.

NEA numbers... and that's Salary, not total compensation which includes healthcare, pension and all the other benefits.
