My fat PS3 is still working like a charm, but meanwhile within an hour or so of playing, the air fans get clearly audible.
I guess I should open it and remove the dust once, but so far I was too lazy.

SO you bought 3 $600 PlayStation 3 consoles instead of getting them fixed by Sony for free? |
you can do that? well i'm not suprised i didn't know something that important. the interest in the PS3 was so low at launch to the point that i was one of the few who was actually at the line for buying one. thankfully it's doing great now.
BTW,as i clarified above, my store raises the price on everything, i got one when the price was 600 at you guy's place. and 2 when it was 400 in america.
80GB still running smooth. I was going to upgrade to the slim this year but then the PS4 got announced so I'll hold off for that.

Mine is working from 2007, but the 300GB HDD I had failed, and I don't have the original 80GB anymore. So, I stripped the HDD from one of the launch 2005 xbox models and I'm down to 20GB. Oh well. I'll upgrade soon.
Mine doesn't make noises. My suggestions would be to not use the thing at all on a really hot day, unless an air conditioner is in the same room and switched on and isn't running off the same breaker as the TV and PS3 because that's a problem waiting to happen.
Also, keep the thing dusted and clean. Don't get it so drench that water gets into the circuits, but do clean it. Don't over-use the disc drive.
My 60gb launch model is still hanging in there.
Sounds like a normal complaint that HDDs are crapping out in these things. I wonder if it's generally the case that laptop HDDs wouldn't be built for constant and long term use.

Me. 40GB, had it since 2008.
It makes some noise running certain games but not others.
I have one perfectly working super quiet 80gb model. I changed the fan a year back from 17 to 19 blades and changed the thermal grease against a superior long lasting one as precautionary measure.
The fan never has to speed up its always on the lowest speed.
