Forums - Nintendo - Wii U $50 price drop September 20th

The more i think about the less this feels like a real HW price cut.
They basically beefed up the smallest entry price with extra memory and other things and basically stopped making money on the bundled game(s).

In terms of memory they no longer have to pay for two types and the other parts will probably absorb that saving. So, there are no real losses on HW, only on the SW, which they can recoup faster on other SW or standalone sales of the game that is bundled.

Nice move!

I never understand why people fight so vehemently against a price drop, lol.

The Wii U was in a lot of trouble, it needs all the help it can get, $299.99 is a decent price.

Generally speaking, when a company drops the price on an item, retailers get that money kicked back to them.

That's the thing, the price isn't being dropped till Sept 20th.  So if it is $350 until then it will basically sell nothing.  On the other hand, if Nintendo is paying to let retailers cut the price early, then what is the point of waiting for the 20th.  Either way, it doesn't really make sense to announce this so far ahead of the cut.

The way it worked with the 3DS is that if we sold it at 170 preprice drop, we took a loss on it.  If we sold it post price drop, Nintendo kicked the difference back to us.  As for why they announced the price drop early, I don't know.  With the 3DS, we actually did get people buying it between the announcement and the price drop so they could get the ambassador games.  Maybe they'll do an ambassador thing, or maybe they just find it better to build the hype to one point.  Maybe they feel like they want people to wait until the price cut to buy it, that way when they do buy it they'll have games like Zelda and Wonderful 101 to capitalize on the hype.  I dunno but I would assume there is a reason.

I'm expecting some good numbers for October, but it will harshly decrease by November and the release of next-gen. I wish Mario Kart came out earlier..

Great news for me because now I will defiantly buy it this holiday.

I figured this would happen that's why i decided to wait.

Will there be some ambassador program for people that purchased it before the price cut?

it's been a year I think it's past time that people should be expecting that

3D Mario is here to save WiiU!  Also Donkey Kong and it should be cheap by Black Friday 2014 when I intend to buy WiiU

It will sharply decrease with the release of SM3DW, DKCTF and WiiFitU?

Sales from September on will be interesting to watch.

I think it'll be $249.99 by next April for Mario Kart 8.
