Forums - Nintendo - How much would Nintendo's "dead" IPs sell if they made a return?

I desperately want another Fzero and starfox game. They both can sell 1+ mil with the right marketing.

well they could do a reboot, i mean KIU is a very successful IP. Ice Climbers on the same boat, it can evolve. You never kno, i would of never thought that Kid Icarus would turn into KIU (gameplay/mechanic wise)

KI:U is not very successful. It sold about a million copies. But that's not really important.

When we look at the original games of Kid Icarus and Ice Climbers, it's obvious that KI is leaps and bounds ahead of IC in everything. KI had decent platforming and shooting, variety in the level design and a shop to purchase upgrades. IC was hop to the top with the most basic of an attack. Leave it in the trash can where it belongs, because there is nothing to build on.

just asking, but wat is successful? Anyway Ice Climbers would have to be a new thing if it ever was to come for sure, but to say leave it there, c'mon!!!!!!! Some People like to see the Ice Climbers make a comeback.

Depends on which system...but for fun's sake we'll say that these all come out AFTER the Wii U has managed to find some moderate sales success and the 3DS has continued to dominate (especially after Pokemon X and Y came out). Let's also assume that all of the games receive above-average reviews and aren't half-assed.

Star Fox: Wii U-1.5-2 million (I think an epic, HD Star Fox game would sell) 3DS-1 million

Ice Climbers: Wii U-less than 250k 3DS-500k (just think it would appeal more at a lower price and to a younger handheld audience)

1080: Wii U-500k (Games like M&S Olympics have diminished the mainstream appeal of games like this) 3DS-less than 500k

Mother: Wii U-750k 3DS-1 million (High-quality RPGs have been doing well on 3DS)

F-Zero: Wii U-1 million 3DS-500k

Wave Race: Wii U-1 million 3DS-500k

Upcoming Games To Get

Definite: Kirby Star Allies (Switch), Mario Tennis Aces (Switch), Fire Emblem (Switch), Yoshi (Switch), Pokemon (Switch), Kingdom Hearts 3 (PS4), Monster Hunter World (PS4)

Considering: Fe (Switch), Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze (Switch), The World Ends With You (Switch), Ys VIII (Switch), Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition (PS4), Kingdom Hearts 2.8 Remix (PS4), The Last Guardian (PS4), Shadow of the Colossus HD (PS4), Anthem (PS4), Shenmue 3 (PS4), WiLD (PS4)

Ice Climbers had a few things going for it. Cooperative platforming in 1985, decent vertical control in a 2D game, etc. The problem is, other, better series like Mario, Donkey Kong, and Kirby have come in and taken those ideas and combined them with what makes  them worthwhile.

I think if Nintendo tried to revive the Ice Climbers anytime from 2001 until NSMB Wii, they could have found a niche among either hardcore platforming fans (like DKCR) or more casual players (KRtDL). A 2.5D platformer Ice Climber game on the GameCube could have at least have sold as much as some of Nintendo's other niche multiplayer games (Four Swords Adventures for example.)

Maybe I'm just being silly, but when I played Ice Climber, I saw both the game's roughness and sloppiness and some good ideas and execution. I'd have liked for the series to be more than a fighting game cameo and a programmer's practice for Super Mario Bros.

A very successful IP sells multiple millions of copies and gets people to buy the hardware. It isn't something that has to leg past the one million mark.

In all my time here on VGC I have never seen a single person say that Ice Climbers was a good game. The only people who ask for a comeback are young gamers who only know the IP from SSBB and have no idea what the game actually is. They just assume that Ice Climbers is cool, because the rest of the cast in the SSB games comes from good games (except Solid Snake and Mr. Gayman Watch).

So you wouldn't say Fire Emblem Awakening isn't Successful? :P Anyway, i agree with you on SSB, The thing is Pit got extremely popular after SSBB, very few wanted a kid icarus game then all of a sudden after he was introduced SSB, Lots of people wanted him to have his own game (including me). The same could be said with Ness/Lucas (even though Mother is a good game). Ice Climbers popularity jumped up with SSBM, so i dont see why ice climbers cant have their own game. Ex of wat i mean, look at Luigi, he is practically from 2D platformers, then look wat they did with him in Luigi's Mansion. Very successful game! This example is a little different but look at Diddy Kong Racing, it had two characters that debuted from a racing game, then made to be one of the best 3D platformers in gaming (Banjo Kazooie/Tooie and Conkers Bad Fur Day) Ice Climbers doesn't have to be that simple, its not the 80s anymore!!!!!!! Hope this changes your view (at least a little)

When I bought my NES back in '87 I had only four games to play until Christmas. I pretty much bought the console for Super Mario Bros and The Legend of Zelda but the other two I chose at the time were Ghosts 'n Goblins (because I liked the arcade) and Ice Climber (don't know why as I had never heard of it before, but whatever).

It goes without saying that Mario and Zelda took up the vast majority of my play time but I actually played (and enjoyed) the NES version of Ghosts 'n Goblins more than Ice Climber. That speaks volumes about Ice Climbers' quality.

Mr. Gayman Watch

Mr. Gayman Watch? Hahaha first time I hear that one xD

OT:

Star Fox - 2 or 3 million
Ice Climbers - not worth rebuting imo, but if Nintendo ever does it it will be an eshop game or something and it probably won't even sell 500k
F-Zero - depends, probably just a million considering that the franchise has never been big to begin with
Mother - who knows, the fans of those games are very vocal (but still a minority) and given the nature of the game I don't think it really appeals to a big audince, so less than a million

Nintendo and PC gamer

Star Fox? F-Zero? Forget about any of those IPs in the OP; a return of Urban Champion would completely bury them.

And by "them" I mean Nintendo.

starfox- 2 million if it was a good and proper sequel to starfox 64...
f-zero- 500,00- 1,000,000...

mother would probably sell about 500,000...it has a devoted audience but a pretty small one in the scheme of things (this opininion is not based on any fact whatsoever)

Let me expand on that.

As a kid, the concept of there being bad video games doesn't really exist at first. You just play everything you can get your hands on. However, at some point you begin to learn that there are indeed bad video games. Ice Climbers is among those games that taught children this important lesson.

Indeed, although for me that realization that bad games exist came years before Ice Climber on my NES since I already had extensive time playing a lot of Atari 2600 games.
