Forums - Gaming - John Carmack: Kinect is “Fundamentally a Poor Interaction”; PS Move has “Fundamental Advantages”

There's only so much you can do without buttons, so even though I'm not a fan of the Wiimote or the Move, they are infinitely better than the Kinect.

People say this a lot but I think that Kinect 1.0 kinda hung itself.  Their whole "You are the controller" thing made most games go 100% button free.  It wasn't until much later with the "Better with Kinect" thing that they decided it was okay to use buttons and Kinect at the same time.  With 2.0 in every box, I think we won't have 100% button free games forced on us as much.  I think we'll be using Kinect and controller combined most of the time.  I'm pretty sure that when they do force us to game with no buttons, it will be a fairly smooth experience.  I have Move side by side with my Wii Motion Plus and my Kinect.  Each device had its strengths.

-Kinect for dancing and games like Fruit Ninja

-Move for FPS titles and its amazing precision (had it before I had a Wii Motion Plus)

-Wii Remote for its amazing support (obviously) and versatility

I can't really comment on Kinect 2.0 all that much but I would imagine that there are still a lot of limitations. It just seems that you run into a wall in terms of precise control whichever way you turn. It just isn't going to replicate traditional games where you're looking for as much precision with input as possible. That means that Kinect has to have dedicated games, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but I've yet to see anything that really appeals to me.

I'm not going to judge yet, of course. Maybe Microsoft will totally blow me away with 2.0 in a way that 1.0 did not. I can't help but doubt it, though.

What's funny about your comment is that there was a time when mice were not considered precise.  The precision of mice have improved so much over the years that if you think they always had the level of precision they do today then you're severely misinformed.  We're not even talking the difference between a balled mouse and a laser mouse.  The precision of ball mice improved over time, but then the introduction of a laser made them exceptionally precise.  Then again, the early laser mice were less precise than they are today.

The precision of Kinect will be based on the fidelity of the depth sensor and RGB camera.

I'm not sure what you're getting at here.  I didn't even mention mice so I'm really not sure what the "severely misinformed" comment is about, either.

If you're implying that Kinect will improve over time, then ... OK?  If you're saying that it will match button controllers for control when Kinect 2.0 releases in a few months then I have to say that I doubt it.

Really, I can't see what your point is relative to what I posted.

One watches you and the other you can use as a sex toy......why not get both? To have someone watch you play with the sex toy....oh wait wrong topic..........wait what? o.O

Anyways main issue I dont like about motion controls is the latency issue, sounds like a mess altogether from reading this article l0l

Your a well respected member on this site so I doubt you would get banned or even warned for that comment (Clearly a Joke). Or was it? lol

Agreed. The Wiimote has proven that Move's approach works.

Kinect is garbage I'd say.

I was commenting on the highlighted.

Mice were once loathed by gamers because they were seen as imprecise.  Yet today the mouse/keyboard combination is seen as the most precise input method for gaming.  Input control methods steadily improve, and they have for decades.  The original joystick was a poteniometer, a dial.  Precise for the time, but compared to the modern analog stick no where near as precise.

My point is that in time an input method, such as Kinect, will improve.  I'm not saying Kinect 2 will replicate or replace a keyboard or mouse, though it will be able to do a passible job at it in some contexts.

The only flaw with kinect is that it's bundled with every X1, making the price rise for no good reason. The motion control craze is over people have moved on.

Bet reminder: I bet with Tboned51 that Splatoon won't reach the 1 million shipped mark by the end of 2015. I win if he loses and I lose if I lost.
