Forums - Microsoft - Carmack: Xbox One “witch hunt” unjustified

I trusted Carmack's judgement with RAGE. I'm not doing it again. Up to par with PC's he said and then he makes a gimped game.

he doesn't know what he's talking about, most people will prefer a disk/packaged game!!!

...not much time to post anymore, used to be awesome on here really good fond memories from VGchartz...

PSN: Skeeuk - XBL: SkeeUK - PC: Skeeuk

really miss the VGCHARTZ of 2008 - 2013...

unjustified how exactly? sure things are looking up for the console now and people need to cut the machine a break but immediately following e3 and the week that followed, everything against them was justified because it was a fucking shambles

At the end of the day consumers will get what they want. Consumers will probably always want both. So we will get both.

A little bit unjustified... does that mean it was mostly justified?

Carmack is a smart guy, but this is kind of dumb. The consumer can't be wrong.

He likes iTunes. That speaks volumes. Entrusting my music to iTunes was a horrible mistake. I still haven't converted everything over yet.

Anyway, something important that he neglected to mention is that part of the reason for the "witch hunt" was simply that Microsoft seriously bungled the reveal. Had they handled it better, I think the backlash wouldn't have been nearly as bad.

I also wonder if these people ever stop to think that much of the rest of the world might not have an internet connection robust enough to go all-digital. It really seems that such a thing never enters their mind. That, or they're simply discounting such people as unimportant in the grand scheme of making money.

Yeah somehow i feel if MS stood on the E3 stage and outright said everything we need to know about the console in a clear and concise way the backlash wouldnt have been as bad. Instead they slowly trickled pieces of information which was sometimes false, then confirmed true then confirmed false again. The whole thing was a mess and the policies were always going to be tough to sell.

@bolded. It happens a lot. Even when reading comments and posts on here people don't seem to ever consider that the rest of the world plays games as well. And at times can be a very important part of it. Instead we get the same old "if you cant afford gaming then you shouldnt be playing games anyways" which is a complete load of crap. Now we need a decent internet connection, with crazy amounts of bandwidth and not to mention low latency which will always be a problem if theres no local servers (which there wont be for the majority of people around the world).

Carmack confirms what we already knew.

no no no no no

None of this is inevitable, and as consumers we should reject companies forcing walled gardens upon us.

More like:

1) Carmack is a PC man.
2) Once Carmack was forced to move to consoles, he obviously gravitated towards Xbox, because it is like a PC.
3) Since he wants Xbox to succeed, he will sugarcoat whatever Microsoft is planning to do.
4) His speech at Quakecon confirms his bias.

Quake was on the N64 before it was ever on a Microsoft console.  Before that Wolfenstien 3D and DOOM were both on the SNES long before they were ever on Microsoft consoles.

The consumer is often wrong, they're just obstinate and believe their right.

Not really. They may want things that are unreasonable or even impossible, but they aren't wrong to want the most appealing product at the lowest price. They may even believe incorrect things, but at the end of the day they don't need to buy your product; you need them to buy your product. So in that sense whatever they do want or don't want is not wrong, and that's what the saying really means.

Microsoft blaming their spectacular failure on "failure to message properly" is hilariously reminiscent of the Obama excuse for the unpopularity of his godawful health care scheme on his failure to "tell the American people a story". It's akin to saying that the consumer is just too stupid to understand how great your thing is when in reality it's the product that sucks, not the messaging (although that sucked, too). There is a reason they have been backtracking on literally every aspect of the thing since they announced it.
