Price is not the issue, games are. People aren't buy a Wii U because Pikmin 3, and Super Mario Land, aren't good enough of a reason to upgrade from a Wii.
Why drop the price? It won't help sales.
Wii Party U, Wii Fit U, Super Mario 3D Worlds, and Mario Kart 8 will boost sales, not $50 of a price cut.

If you really want a cheap Wii U, look for sales. Wallmart in Canada sells it for $200, and it's not going to be helping sales much at all.

They'll either drop it in September to rev up for the holidays, or try to ride out the holiday season (Wii U did decently well last holiday time) to get the money they can from this SKU, then price-drop next March or so, next to Mario Kart 8.

They won't be dropping the price in the next month, but a price drop before or during October seems probable. Especially since there will actually be games for the system by that time, as well.
Retailer sales haven't solved the Wii U's problems, why would an official price cut solve the Wii U's problems?

Certain retailers are dropping the price like crazy already, but it still doesn't move units. It's prob a combo of their shit advertising and the lack of must have titles. They should drop it once they release more games and get their advertising back together for the holiday season.
Why do people want the price to drop so much? It's still being sold at a loss, reducing the price will hurt them quite a bit. Something they could do is remove Nintendo Land and price the 32GB with all of the Deluxe/Premium stuff at $299, but they will NOT drop it easily like how they dropped the 3DS price. They'll probably drop the price in time by the end of March 2014 or when Mario Kart 8 releases (when they are close to making profit or not selling at a loss anymore). It would be great if it were cheaper, but they can't do it easily without having it hurt them in the long run, regardless of what people think of the hardware.
If they are losing money on every Wii U sold, then Ninty would probably do a price drop when their heavy hitters are released or near-release. Doing a sudden price drop without the games would only hurt them.
So probably next year with Smash Bro and Mario Kart coming.
