"Wii U isn't competing with anything"

^What is this then? Your words no?

The PS4/X1 and PS3/360 will have all of the same games (third pary). Why get a next gen console when you can get the same games on current gen? What is the Wii getting? Is the Wii even a relevant console anymore? In the end, I think the Wii U will sell no more than 35 million units, and it's flagship titles will make them a profit.

So... how about my question?

Who said that? That's clearly impossible given the Wii U's install base and Smash going multiplatform. Thankfully, they don't need to sell as well as their Wii incarnations to greatly boost up the Wii U.

Read some of the post here to find out! And yeah, they do. Otherwise, the WiiU sales boost will be too small to matter.

lol nice try, but I've already read through much of this thread, yet don't remember anyone saying anything so ridiculous, so you're gonna have to give me a direct quote. And no they don't need to sell that much unless you're saying a console's sales only matter if it's doing Wii-like numbers. Yeah, you don't actually mean that.

Around 7-8 million Ltd for Smash and 10+ million lifetime for Kart are great numbers.

If NSMBWiiU sales can be down from 30 or so million to 2M, I think it's safe to say that Smash sales will drop by more than 2-3M. By how much did the Wario game's sales fall from the Wii one, btw? Must be by more than 50%.

I just answered it. The Wii U isn't competing with any other console. Most of the games on the Wii U, you can only get on the Wii U. The major Wii U games aren't coming on the Wii. If you want to play Watch Dogs, or Assassin's Creed 4, you can get it on multiple consoles. You want the new SSB, or Mario Kart 8, you can only get it on the Wii U.

The problem with the "Nintendo will get the kids market" is often times they don't when it actually comes to consoles.

*lot's of text*

Yikes, if this is all true, then NoA is being really stupid what with all their advertisements targeting children.

Unfortunately I think what NOA is doing is looking at their demographic charts from the last 2-3 years and seeing a lot of the adults who had Wii/DS moving onto smartphones/tablets and there is a bit of panic going on and they are doubling down on an audience they think they know well (kids market) to try to appease NCL.

It's not all NOA's fault though, they are being put in a bad position but not having games to sell their hardware with and not poor hardware descisions from the NCL side.

Holy fuck this is the dumbest post I have ever seen.

NSMB Wii didnt sell 30 million in 9 months and Wii cost $199 when it came out with an install base of over 50 million and already had Wii Sports/Resort, Wii Fit/Fit Plus, Mario Galaxy, Twilight Princess, Smash Bros, Mario Kart at the time it released.

On the other hand NSMBU launched with the console whixh cost $299/349 and has no other major titles to accompany it. NSMBU will continue to sell alongside Wii U for the next 4-5 years, it wont sell anywhere close to the previous installments numbers but I would be shocked if it sisnt sell at least 10 million lifetime.

lol come on now. NSMBWii didn't sell what it did in 8 months, so it's not yet a legit comparison. For all we know, NSMBU could end up with 10+ million lifetime. We definitely know it could sell more than it is by looking at that attach rate and NSMB2. As all previous installments have shown, the series has the potential to sell 10+ million, however it needs the install base to do so, and NSMB alone cannot achieve such an install base, as we're currently witnessing. The series has always released on top of a already large library of games and a price cut, so there was nothing holding it back before. NSMBU however released at launch on Nintendo's most expensive console ever, and then the Wii U had that horrible game drought. So despite NSMBU's amazing attach rate, the actual sales so far aren't that impressive for what the series normally does in the same time frame. So what needs to happen here? Moar games and a price cut, all of which there will be by 2014s end. Also, for Smash Bros. specifically, Melee sold more than the original despite being on a smaller install base. If anything is safe to say, I think it's that SSB4 will sell more than Melee even if the Wii U's install base is no greater than the GCN's.

I wouldn't say that's a lock. SSB was a late cycle title on the N64 and was a new IP, so it took a little while for word of mouth to spread on it.

The GameCube and Wii versions are the "matured" versions of the franchises, generally speaking a lot of franchises do peak in their 2nd or 3rd installment because that's the perfect mix of the franchise being "new and fresh" but still having evolved from the original.

By the 4th/5th installment though things can start to get a little formulaic and you start to lose some audience. This is true of not only game franchises, but movie franchises too I think.

U make a good point about Smash Bros, it should still be able to sell on par with Melee tho. His point about NSMB is spot on.
