Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Wii U Passes 1 Million Units in Japan in Roughly the same time Frame the PS3 did

So it's doing about as well as a performance that everyone considered to be absolutely awful and a failure.

Later on the PS3 picked up, and we don't know if the Wii U will do the same.

And lol at that inaccurate article. There was no pre-launch price cut in Japan.

Yes there was.

OT: The WiiU is not competing with a console sales beast like the Wii which the PS3 had to do.

The 20GB launch price was changed to ¥49,980 at TGS of that year. It was not a drop that retailers did.

The 60GB was unchanged.

Lol WiiU doesn't need 3rd party support to turnaround in Japan. It has Ninty which is all Wii, DS, or 3DS needed. WiiU will surely get franchises bigger than whatever PS4 gets lol. Also I find it hard to believe PS4 will do great in Japan considering Sonys handheld can't even do well this time. PSP had no problem beating PS3 so honestly I can see Vita beating PS4.

However, WiiU's issue hasn't really been price. Its been content. PS3 had plenty of content, just too damn expensive at first.

And it looks like content is still going to be the problem 3rd party has given up on the Wii U.

Plus the PS3 was 600 dollars and the Wii U has no competition- this makes the Wii U look even worse.

EA is the only 3rd party with next-gen software that has no games on WiiU this holiday and they already stated support will be back in 2014. (basically they just wanted to F WiiU and help push people to PS4/XBO at launch... its part of their "unprecedented partnership")

WiiU is not that far behind X360 globally at this same time at a similar price point too and by end of year it will likely be higher than 360 (comparing these two as they both had first year alone).

Bethesda Games, 2K Games, Rockstar Games, Valve, Insomniac Games, EPIC, and a lot more BIG Third Party Companies Not Supporting the WiiU

Japan loves Donkey Kong Country. Just want to put that out there,

The Wii U will never reach PS3-level lifetime sells unless natural disasters or terrorist attacks hit Xbone and PS4 manufacturing plants. But as it's been stated many times here, don't count it out until it's big guns hit. Let's wait until after Zelda, Mario, DK, Wii Sports and Wii Party touch down.

neither will the Xbone/PS4 IMO

How is that? Looking at the figures here on the site, the X360 leads by around 550k.

Half a million is not that much. It'll be gone by January.

Although correct this comparison has a significant flaw. The Wii U was available in all the main markets within a month. The x360 was not available in Europe until months after the NA launch. The x360 sales you are comparing the wii u with is pratically just the x360s NA sales vs the wii u's global.

Wow, that is embarrassing for Nintendo. They do not have the higher price excuse like the PS3 did.

They are only just getting the software that we were expecting in the "launch window" though.

I actually got a Wii U for Rayman and Pikmin 3. One of those came out here this weekend, the other isn't out for another good few weeks!

I think Wii U will be fine. Tbh, it's just been a general trend with games consoles lately, people aren't as eager to jump right in now, they want the software to be there and a price drop first. The last system to fly out the games was Wii, which already had the killer app on day 1 and a (much) lower price especially considering that killer app was in the box!.

I think some people are extremely over-analytical of early performance of consoles and trying to push the "dooooomed" crap way too soon, especially if it's not from their preferred manufacturer.

Give it a couple more Nintendo exclusives, and it'll be okay. It might not be a 100m seller, but it doesn't need to be.

European launch of the 360 was December 2005. Wasn't that like a few weeks after the US?

PS3 was the one that didn't launch until about 5 months after in Europe (and also in the process missed the 2006 holiday sales as it came out in March 2007).
