Forums - Microsoft - Molyneux says he would have “loved” to have finished Project Milo, the Kinect tech demo from 2009

What's stopping him. If he believes in it that much, crack on with it.

Funding.

I always wondered how difficult it could be for molyneux to get funding. Seriously. If i was a banker I would laugh at all his crazy ideas (not bad ideas, just not ... well ... profitable)

I thought the idea itself was pretty cool. An actual AI you could interact with, that would respond to any dialogue you threw at it. Sure it was relatively simple, but when I first saw it, my initial thoughts were "holy shit if you could integrate this idea into something like a future Mass Effect game, so you could have real conversations with the characters.......*drool*"

Too bad nothing has come of it so far

It was.  Kinectimals actually had the same AI technology built into it.

My guess is that in the future, when developers realize how powerful Kinect 2's speech processing is that they'll begin integrating real conversations.  Though in all fairness, having experienced promptless gaming back in the age of text adventures, I like the way Mass Effect does it.  Having to guess what the best thing to say is and have it work for what you want to do, are two very different things.  I hated Zork for that reason.    Trying to guess what a developer is thinking isn't as easy as it sounds.

But there's an easy way around that. They can just give you prompts/scripted speech options that serve to help you progress through the story, while still allowing you to have free conversations with the AI concerning anything else

I personally never saw the gaming appeal to Milo. The project felt like a sophisticated Tamagotchi. It was fine as a tech demo but I don't think there was potential for a full fledged game there.

Listening to him talk abut it in the videos where he demonstrates it, it seems it would be a pedophiles dream to have that type of relationship with a child.  Listening to him I kept asking myself, "Why would any sane adult want to 'play' this?"

Pedophiles dream?  By definition, they want to have sex with kids.  Would Milo allow them to do that?  No, it wouldn't.  So it's not a pedophiles dream, so how about we forever drop that immature and incorrect notion forever, capiche?

Going by Molyneux's record, it probably would have ended up as a swing-pushing simulator or something.

(Former) Lead Moderator and (Eternal) VGC Detective

I cannot believe that Molyneux is saying this, quite frankly the guy is an idiot.

The whole project is complete and utter fantasy. Even the USA military does not have AI at the level implied by the video they originally put out for Milo.

The closest current real tech is IBMs watson. This wont run on a xbone and infact doesnt need a camera, just a microphone (and a chunk of processing and storage..)

By the way that watson video gives me goosebumps every time..

So, ignoring the question completely.  Sure.

Now, again, why would anyone want to play this?  Why would you invest your emotional time and resources into something that can't actually share them with you.  It can only do what it is programmed to do.  The idea of Milo wasn't a game, it was meant that you would develop a true emotional connection as you interacted with Milo.

To me, that just seems unhealthy.

It needed a twist.  Where the very nature of the game isn't as simple as it seems.  What are you?  And why are you trying to get to know this child?  What's the point?

1)  What if the 'game' is something like the movie 'The Cell' where Milo is actually the child avatar for a person that knows a secret that you're have to find out by building a relationship with him and this is one of many 'personalities' you interact with before you get what you need to prevent some catastrophe?

2)  Milo is like the kid from the episode of The Twilight Zone called "It's A Good Life" and is a threat to the world unless we can get to know him, befriend him and help him to understand that with great power comes great responsibility.

3) What if Milo could be some Skynet like computer that wants to destroy all humanity and our efforts to reach out to him/it and show the our value as a species will decide the fate of all?

Ok.  Fair point.  But that wasn't the direction they were going with Milo.  They did a demo and it was essentially like Fable, but centered around Milo.

Some of the ideas you mention certainly would have been cool.  Most certainly as an aspect of a game.
