Forums - Microsoft - Kinect: Microsoft pledges to “aggressively challenge” government spying

sales2099 said:

I hope they did? No, if you read NSA asked for free access of specific accounts and got free access to those accounts. It wasn't a 1 time viewing, it was consistant, unlimited access to requested accounts.

When One releases, it provides a boatload more information for the NSA. They will ask, and they will recieve.

As for my internet history, it's bad enough that google sells our history, but when I view my porn, at least Mozilla has private viewing, and from what I read, Mozilla does not co-operate with the NSA.

So I'm safe to look at all my freaky shit.

" They will ask, and they will recieve."

Presumptous much?

Now your really going into irrational territory. The government cares about phone and internet records, not gaming consoles. Xbox 360 and its kinect was not mentioned as devices that MS was asked to divulge. They say Kinect has numerous privacy settings and that they would aggressively appeal any future requests that would harm their relationship with consumers.

They said all they need to. People like you just show your true colors now. Get real, and stop being full of yourself. Assuming your so damn important that the government wants to spy on you.....disregarding your phone records but ripping on a not-released console that MS has confirmed to never give Xbox related information in the past and will fight against in the future.

Someone who is not trustworthy of Microsoft after it having a serious scandal is irrational? Who are you or anyone else to judge what I request in order to feel safe and protected.

What you're doing is the same thing as telling an 18 year old white girl to walk through the bad parts of Detroit at 2am. It's irrational, statistically she won't get raped or mugged, but if she doesn't feel safe doing it, then you can't say she is irrational for not doing it.

No internet security is different from vaginal security, but the point still stands.

Google gets an absurd amount of information requests from the NSA and it oblidges to some degree just because of the number of cases it has. When One releases and can provide information on the heart-rate of users, and interior house dimensions, Microsoft will get a lot more information requests, and will share it.

----

Who cares if I'm important or not? Does my privacy as a consumer not matter? What if my son grows up to become a rock star, or a famous scientist. Then all the information about him growing up will be reviealed, and I won't be able to lie about the growth hormones and brain stimulants I forced into his breastmilk..... I won't be able to lie about the 17 prostitutes who roam freely in my house....my Marijuanna plantation will be exposed and I'll go to prison

WHAT THEN?!?!?

It can't be turned off, it can only be "paused."

Paused is not off... and it's stupid that I can't physically unplug it.

Did you not say to use analogies? I have a Camera in my laptop, but it can be disabled. I also run my computer on an old version of Ubuntu which has no program to access the camera, so it's 100% useless on my laptop.

If I still had Windows, I would be worried about privacy invasion behind a camera if it was a problem, but I haven't heard about any scandals or serious comprimises in security (except Skype in this scandal, but I don't use skype).

http://kotaku.com/xbox-ones-kinect-can-turn-off-microsoft-says-noting-510100564

It can be turned off. MS takes privacy very seriously. Xbox is not on the governments radar, and you are now going into weird territory by persisting.

But the article itself says Kinect has to be on and plugged in while you're playing the game.

Who cares if it's off when you leave the house, I want it off when I'm present. It can read my heartbeat while I'm playing, just by looking at my face? WHAT?!?!? This just makes the system that much more scary.

Get over yourself. It can be plugged in and still off.

No it can't, paused is not off.

Get over yourself, just because someone disagrees with you, and is more skeptical about their privacy then you, doesn't mean you are justified in saying they are wrong.

Even in the kotaku link above, it does say that people have good reason to be suspicious about the Kinect 2 sensor.

Didn't this one teenager get arrested for sarcastically claiming he is crazy, and he's going to go on a murder rampage? I believe it's looking likely that he will do prison time. If this is a real thing, then what about the things I say at home?

Am I only entitled to privacy if I have nothing important to say? That's not privacy....

Watch, maybe not with the One, but one day they will mass arrest teenagers for making sarcastic remarks like this. There are people who seriously believe that our future will be like 1984 or A Brave New World, and I can understand why. People shouldn't be forced into doing something, and this is an example of just that.

It isn't MS's scandal to begin with, and was wildly taken out of proportion....by people like you. In this case, yes I do fell I can judge you based on your irrationality on this matter given how MS has put all concerns to rest at this point. You are assuming the worst with 0 Xbox related base to draw upon.

You are arguing theoreticals and dodging the point. Focus on your phone and internet records. Your gaming console is safe. MS has fully cooperated in saying exactly what they divulge. XBox isn't among them, and kinect can be tweaked to your liking.

Skeptical....no you are downright irrationally paranoid given all MS has told us about what they give and the privacy of kinect. Yes I am aware there are more people like you...doesn't make it right given all the evidence.

Read what you are actually saying. The more I read this, the more I am convinced you just live in your own bubble. Worst case scenario future thinking....and damn all the rational evidence that points to the contrary.

Well then, I think you're a bit arrogent to judge me, and to belittle my beliefs. You're being no different then an Athiest insulting Christians.

While these concerns may be put to rest for you, it's not the case for everyone. This is why we still see threads, and news reports about the matter.

You're dodging the point that when One releases, people will be interested in seeing the inside of your home, and getting information on the physical appearance about the person behind the keyboard. People will be interested to scan for key words over One, just like NSA already does over phone calls. It's only a matter of time before this information is compromised, and yes it probably won't be my information that's compromised, but it will be for others.

Kinect can't be tweaked to my liking, it physically has to be plugged in while I run my one. This isn't to my liking. It may be over the top to you, but MS already has your attention, and will likely sell a One to you. It's people like me which MS needs to convince, not you.

We see news on this because there are still people like you who spew your now baseless ideas to gullible potential buyers.

360 Kinect is untouched in terms of privacy violations. That right there is a good base to say that you are playing out a worst case scenerio.......just because.

I can't stress this enough, you can be plugged in and still be off. This is confirmed.

When you're playing the system, it can't be powered down. Kinect can only be powered down when the system is down (you provided a link, read it).

So Kinect is like a radio which is stuck on in a car. You can turn the radio off when you turn the car off, but when the car is on, it's stuck on.

Why is this so hard to grasp?

Insult me all you want, but your no better for belittling real concerns with a console. Honestly I'm not huge on privacy, but I like the fact that I always have the option of privacy. Computers do come with Camera's, but I can run them on OS's without the software to access it, I can also physically unplug it by opening my laptop up. Cell phones might be scanned for keywords, but if I was really paranoid, I can always tell people to meet me in person.

With One, you just don't get that.

Im not insulting you per-se, just saying that your concerns are pretty much baseless at this point and you are just feeding into your own fears.

A radio can be turned off when the car is on....you merely have to push a button to activate it and can cease it just as easily.

Focus on things you know are security risks like your phone, and don't worry about thigns that are not only not out yet, but have a track record of being untouched by government demands (referring to 360/kinect 1.0)

I think we're done here.

Tell me, how is what you're doing any different from an Athiest telling a Catholic that his religious views are baseless, and wrong?

It isn't, and even in the link you provided, it specificalls says "The spying concern wasn't groundless."

Now you might want to make up all the excusses you want, you might want to say that I, and people like me live in a bubble (This is not an insult? My opinion differs from yours so I live in a bubble?), but the thing is Microsoft has already sold their console to you, not me.

Maybe to you, the scenario I'm presenting is a "worse case scenario", but it's still a needless scenario. If consumers like myself do not feel safe with a Kinect sensor, we should be allowed to play games without it, but we can't. As much as you think Kinect can be turned off when you game, it can't. It physically needs to be plugged in, and "paused." Paused is not off, if it were, off would be called paused.

Microsoft has given away our information before, and it's only rational to assume they will do it again. For that simple reason, I should be able to play the One console and limit how much information I want to give to microsoft. Physically unplugging a product which I have no intention of using, is not asking too much. The fact that Microsoft doesn't even provide this option to the "overly paranoid" individuals like myself, is clear cause for concern. If there wasn't any reason why we can't unplug the sensor, then it would be an option.

Our information is being stored, simple as that. The question is, will information like out heart rate, and number of illegal immigrants be given away?

---

the reason why you still see news and thread about stuff like this is because there is still a large percentage of gamers who just aren't convinced. Parading in threads, insulting people, and trying to force your opinion won't change anything.

If I have a fear of my information being exposed, then I have a fear of this, and I should have an option to eliminate that fear. If car radios made me paranoid, I could physically remove one, lol.

Yea, a car radio can be turned off, when the car is on, but Kinect can't be turned off when One is on. Do you get what I'm saying? There is no separate off button for the Kinect, only pause.

This is why Kinect 2 is still an issue. this would be like pressing pause on a cd playing in your car. The CD player is still on, still reading the disk, still functioning. Just not playing. Kinect still reads your room when it's paused, doesn't it charge you by the viewer when you're watching a movie on netflicks?

My phone and internet are only security risks now because I own one. If I owned and XBOne, I would have to add right to the top of my list of potential privacy invaders. So I'll focus on this, by not getting a One, and eliminate that worry.

---

you can tell me I'm wrong all you like, but until Microsoft fixes my issue (not your issue, MY issue), then they won't have my sale, and in the end, they are trying desperatly to get the attention of gamers like me, not you.
