Forums - General Discussion - UK: Online porn to be blocked by default

spurgeonryan said:
They are not saying it is banned. Just making it harder for kids to get ahold of it. Are you all against being 21 to buy beer or 18 to buy cigarettes as well?

Yes, I am against both of these. 18 is responsible enough to buy alcohol and 16 is responsible enough to poison yourself. 16 year olds can join the army and kill, they have the right to smoke if they want to.

I'd be more concerned if the government were to let websites that promote anorexia and suicide through than some porn. These are far more harmful.

Hmm, pie.

Plus, this would just make it even easier for kids to buy other kids these poisons. Kids are not responsible enough for Alcohol and tobacco. Plus their minds are still developing I believe late into their Teens. If you say this is alright, then you must want to go back to how it was in the old days and allow kids to marry at early ages. 13 and marry a 40 year old. Right?

There has to be limits in society or things get bad.

Yes and limits are fine, we have limits, 17 to drive, 16 to smoke, 18 to buy alcohol (5 upwards to drink it at home if you parent lets you), 18 to vote, 16 to have sex regardless of sexuality. And guess what, people do buy cigarettes at 16 and give them to their younger friends, this will never change.

Internet shouldn't be restricted, if it is, then it should be done as an opt in to the restrictions. Not the other way around. Also, who determines what is porn and what isn't? Is the Ann Summers website porn for example?

Kids need protecting but it's up to parents to take responsibility and not have the government doing it for them. Goverment, if they are going to regulate the internet they should look more into sites that promote self harming, anorexia and suicide.

It's not the same thing, and it's not what this law tries to do.

This law is in theory to prevent kids to watch porn through the internet. Will it stop them from watching it? Nope. Everyone of us hold a Playboy or other magazine about it when we weren't supposed to, or watched a porn movie at a friends house that he "just found".

And what will happen here is that porn sites will just change their name. Hhave you noticed how we are using the word "porn" in this thread while in any other one we would be using things like "p0rn" or "pron", etc. This is what will happen, and since IP providers will claim that they can't control every web out there (this was their excuse with the movie/music industry) so they won't do nothing and only the fools will notify that they want porn.

Because let's be honest, this is not a law about crimes or felonies. This is a morality law. And this is something that in this day and age we should all be against.

Besides, if they acomplish to do it, what will they do next? Block site news from other countries as they don't explain the "real" situation of the country and damage the trust the citizens have with their government?

I think this is nice. I'm actually baffled that some are against it. We don't have unlimited porn streams coming to regular TV unless we request it, so I don't think we should have porn coming though the web in that way.

I don't have a problem with people watching porn, but the broadcast of it should be regulated. I like the idea of bringing some class to our culture.

Also, lol at the horse cum girl thing. I remember back in the day a friend of mine playing that on his computer with a room of friends including a bunch of girls. Want to talk about a way to clear out a room quickly...

Let's block Youtube because we don't have an unlimited stream of everything coming to regular TVs unless we request it. Also, this isn't about bringing class to our culture, this is about censorship because certain people don't like porn and they fear it'll do something to children. If we want to block things to bring class to our culture, well, say goodbye to violence because violence certainly isn't classy almost ever.

I would block extreme violence to kids too.  I guess you're fine with kids viewing porn and violence.  I'm not.  To each their own.

They don't seem to harm kids so yes, I'm fine with them seeing porn and violence. I'm completely fine if they're teenagers, younger than that and I'll feel a little uneasy but I'm not too worried. Kids aren't mage of glass, they don't need to be protected from everything. What they need is guidance, not ridiculous amounts of protection.

Tell your kids porn is not at all what real sex is like and bam, you have no problem. Tell them violence is not accepted in real life and bad, you have no problem. If only all parents could raise their kids. Of course it's not as simple as the examples I just gave but they should give you an idea. And if you have no idea how to raise children, you shouldn't get any in the first place because you'll just end up harming them if you don't.

lol it sounded so stupid that i thought it had to be the US first.

Well the UK is related to the US, we just kicked them out and stopped paying taxes. Sooner or later we'll block deh pornz 2. We still have better teeth though. :)

If I was a leader in the UK...

1) Buy stock in playboy (and other adult magazines)
2) Make online porn illegal
3) Watch magazine stock prices and sales fly through the roof
4) PROFIT

Nah, the U.S. has lobbyists who will prevent such a thing.

@OP Seems like most of the "West" is in need for self-government.

Unfortunately it's not as easy as giving simple instructions to kids, and it's not as simple as saying raise your kids right or don't have them.

There are kids without guidance, and simple instructions don't work.  That's why we as a society have to step in and help to protect the larger group.

You feel that violence and porn are fine for kids and I respect your opinion.  I believe in protecting kids and guiding them till maturity, so my view is different.  So I like the default internet to be porn-free until requested otherwise by an adult.

I don't see the problem with this. I actually support this cause too many young kids these days are visiting porn sites. Besides, people will just switch to other forms of media. So expect sales of newspapers like The Sun to increase, magazines, and ratings for adult TV channels to go up as well.
