Why is it a big deal?

Because people dont want a camera and microphone device sitting in the living room, or even bedroom, connected at all times. It doesnt matter how many "off" functions it has, its still connected at all times. Now answer my question or I will report you for being off topic and derailing.

Why does it have to be plugged in at all times?

Carl, I believe you were the one to first answer his question with another question. Hence off topic/derailing instead of answering his question to begin with. Should I report you?

I wouldn't be surprised someone will eventually make something to fake a connected Kinect. Someones probably gonna attempt the most basic thing. Cut the cord and leave the port plugged in. People prefer to have options and not forced things. I see Kinect like Apple's news stand app not removable from the pages (till IOS 7). I think there be less hate towards it if Kinect was able to play every type of game out there with 100% usefulness or no problems. I frankly don't care about voice controls. No matter how good they say they are, they aren't. Siri is crap, when it fouls up just because you have background noise (fan, AC etc.). Or can't understand you at normal speaking speed.

why you guys want it so it's cheap and competitive???/ Ms doesn't need the XB1 to be number one or 2 in sales.... a lucrative third place is way enough to build up something.... look at apple they've been second in the OS market for 2 decades... it didn't prevent them to become a big player and the biggest company out there...

you don't like Kinect and don't want it plugged in for some obscure reason, don't get an XB1 it's that simple... I'm pretty sure they know they'll lose some of their customer that are completely against Kinect... but since their vision is different than those customers... does it really matter....??? some of us want them to take that direction and are really happy they push it.... yeah it might still be gimmicky but it will be one step further in that direction

one day we'll have that minority report feel and MS and it's partner will be pioneer in that field.... I still can't fathom how some people can discard a tech like that when I know for a fact that even its current version is more efficient for some things than the pad... and therefore this one will be even more efficient at it.... I wonder if people received the mouse like that when apple released its first crapy iteration with very little use for it....
Kinect was awesome for a first try at it (yeah it wasn't all we hoped for, but it still was a big step in the field) and Kinect 2 will be more awesome.... now if you don't want to shake your habits and give something new a chance as limited as it is... go with the competition I don't know why people are still trying to change things with MS... since they clearly don't have the same vision anyway....

the act of requiring it to be plugged in guarantees a couple things.  there will be no second hand market for kinect.  every xbox one user has kinect connected to the system not thrown in the closet.  so they can add features that they think gamers will like .  think of kinect as the touch pad on the ps4 controller.  no developer is required to use it but if they want to they know that every ps4 user has this feature included.

I think bundling it with every Xbox One would likely remove a 2nd hand market for the device, because why would someone need a 2nd Kinect? Its not like the Wii Sports bundle, where its a disc in a card sleeve that can easily be lost/broken. Though I do see the point youre making here. 'tis a good one.

With the added features, people can still do it when they want. All they have to do is plug Kinect in. I see this is a meh point in all honesty.

you forgot the first kinect was sold  to not just people that wanted kinect but people that wanted to experiment with the camera.  so if anybody playing on hacking the camera they will buy themselves a $500 paper weight.

Yes, it is a problem. It doesn't add much value for its high price.

If the cost to add Kinect to every console was $10 it would be pretty obviously worth it. But now that analysts estimate that Kinect 2.0 costs as much as half the cost of the Xbone console, you have to ask if the value and functions added compensate the radically higher cost.

Personally I think it's a huge mistake to invest so much in Kenict, an enormous mistake by Microsoft's part that shows how the Xbox division is completely out of touch with the market trends, and that the Xbone spells the beginning of the end for Microsoft in the gaming business.

Kinect sold well enough for them to want it in every Xbox One package. Thats simple. The benefits of having it in every box are plain to see. Market penetration.

If enough games utilise it and the games sell well enough, then it will be worth bundling it because of software sales. Theyre so wanting the Wii expanded market with Xbox One Kinect, because the Wii expanded market had a tendancy to buy trash in the Millions and devs could make a fuckton of money.

I think that the main problem with a strategy like that is that theyre launching at a pricepoint too high for these gamers with technology that isnt "new" anymore, though that is for another thread.

But the expanded market is overdue. Family and casuals that the Wii recruited have long gone elsewhere. Microsoft is out of touch in their belief that these people will buy a Xbone. Kinect and motion controls was a short fad. It's over.

Are you out of touch too? You're not a corporate shill, are you Carl?

Yah because you are unpluging your USB camera from your PC or even a laptop when you are not using it right? Or the one on your cell phone/tablet?
I do not see what it would be a big deal with Kinect, esp. if you can turn it off and achieve the exact same thing than any PC/Phone/Tablet or other device (and even the EyeToy on Playstation).

I actually find it funny that the majority of people complaining about it (Playstation fans) have actually no problem with all these devices I listed but find it problematic on the Xbox One (a device that they certainly will not own anyway...) And even for the few that are actually really interested into the Xbox One, again, why is it a big deal with the console but not with your smartphone, PC, tablets etc... (even TVs got camera now...)

The only possible thing that may turn this into a big deal is a conspiracy theory about the big evil Microsoft... and well... As I said, conspiracy theory... No big deal :)

No. I asked him the question he ignored in the OP, which wouldnt be offtopic. Unless asking someone the question the topic is focussed on is classed as off topic?

Yes. Report me.

I am. Microsoft pay me to write pro-Xbox stuff on VGChartz.

I dont have a webcam on my computer, and if I get one I can unplug it and still use my computer.

My camera is built into my phone.

EyeToy isnt a requirement.

Kinect isnt built in. It has to be connected. The One would work just fine without it plugged in.

Stop the damage control. Stop the deflection. Its petty and annoying. If you (or others) have nothing worthwhile to say, then dont say anything.

You should stop telling people to do not say anything just because you created the thread or because they are not directly anwering your questions. It is not because you do not like our replies or expect only the ones who have an issue with Kinect being always plug-in to participate that we do not have right to counter your points with ours. You want to state the "problem" you are mentionning in your OP as a fact for everybody and then want anwsers to that. Well before to anwser your question we need to all be on the same page, right? Let us talk and participate or I will report you (me or someone else).

Now, when you said that you can unplug your PC USB Camera, that your phone has a built-in one, etc... It is true but it does not change anything we the fact that you DO NOT unplug them even if you can. So back to the question; what is the big deal with Kinect? You are telling us that it is a problem but are not actually providing any viable reason why and the question from Tuscaniman99 or other people is very valid. Other than complaining for complaining; just enlight us on why is it such a big deal?
