Forums - Politics Discussion - Shouldn't we give reparations to Native Americans?

Don't they already have that with money for casinos and land and tax breaks and so forth?

The U.S. has no problems giving Jews land in another side of the planet (Israel), but when it comes to giving Native Americans land from their own country, suddenly they don't think it's necessary. No wonder the U.S. isn't seen in the greatest light by the majority of the world's population.

Wrong United country there.

It was the United Kingdom that gave the Jews Israel.  After the Jews had bought a lot of it from arabs already.

And the U.S. didn't support the move?

It depends based on the time... but most of the time... no.

The US was much more intersted in winning over the rest of the Middle East.

Official US policy was pretty much just admitting the UK had the power to do it, without giving them any actual support so they could play a balancing act with the british and the new middleastern powers.

This continued up until like World War 2 and after where the US was actually courting the middle east harder and wound up with Israel as an ally by accident as Israel originally walked a path of nuetrality in the cold war.  Only changing sides do to a bunch of jews being killed for "atempting to kill stalin."

They eventually got onboard for Resolution 181... though mostly only because Truman was a really unpopular president and he wasn't going to lose any votes for supporting it.  (The state department and in general most the government saw it counterproductive with an arab/russian pipeline being the big danager.)

The story goes recognition of Israel only happened because his campaign advisor said he would vote against him if he didn't recognize Israel.  It actually took the entire state department by surprise since they were working on something completely different.

So basically US policy up to the founding of Israel was "Eh, we'd rather you didn't) For 20+ years, then Wilson said "eh fuck it, i need votes."

Even after that US recognized Palestine they mostly ignored Israel, and actually sided agaisnt Israel and with Egypt when Israel took over the Suez Canal.

Amusngly it ended up being the UK, France and israel vs Egypt, the United States and Russia.

Generally the US waffeld between "Support Arabs more/support all equally) policy until like... LBJ.

Dude, American Natives have the best living situations in the fucking country!

They get so many benefits, No taxes, Discounts on everything, huge food stamp benefits without questions, utilities are mostly paid for by the government, and they have Casinos.

What the hell more do you want?

It's been 300 fucking years, get over it for christs sake.

...uhh...ill just put my favorite quote of all time here.

"Welcome to Pain, the second of three...You have dealt the first...now deal with me!!"

Absolutely not, such liberal thinking is so foolish. Countries rise and fall in war, it is not the responsibility of the victor to give back what he has taken.

If you havent noticed our country economically is still in the toilet. We cant afford to pay our bills, and we certainly cannot afford this. Nice idea.... but if this did happen then There would have to be African American reparations and we would be broke all the way to the birth of a second China in the western hemishere

Dude your country has  lower unemployment than 9/10's of the world's countries and higher gdp growth than practically all of europe. It's one of the top ten richest countries in the world (GDP per capita http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_GDP_%28PPP%29_per_capita) and despite all the complaing about the 99% America still has a huge middle class relative to the rest of the world. .

As an american, i don't think we should be using our economic situaition as an excuse for anything...

O and african americans aren't a cohesive group which can really be defined and located in the event we decided to pay them reparations native americans can't be compared to them.

Reparations are unrealistic but affirmative action should stay alive, at least in universities. MInorities should benefit from calamities.

I live in Maine, they are all over the place, I have some native blood in me as well.

Doesnt stop my point from being correct.

The reservation system is screwed up. It's like we tried to give them reparations, but fucked it up. The natives have had a really rough time of things, but the best thing we can do for them is get rid of reservations. Make them normal citizens.

Not only reservations and casinos. On their land they have their own laws.

Ex: http://www.westernsky.com/TermsOfUse.aspx

They can charge whatever the hell they want on loans. I this that you can only charge 30% in interest on a loan legally. I have seen this commercial and was totally wowed.

$10,000 loan that is payed back in 86 monthly installments of $746 or some such. And read the last paragraph of the agreement. The point of this is that they can do whatever they want in the borders of the US which is more that anyone else can say.

Further more I am sick of this reparations talk. I came to the US when I was 10 from Russia and I don't feel like I should pay any reparations to anyone...
