Forums - Gaming - Prediction: XBox 1 will win the generation (consoles)

XB1 > Wii U > PS4

With all the recent threads about how the PS4 will win and XB1 will fail to do too well, I decided to make my own prediction claiming the opposite. I believe that the order for system sales will be: 3DS > XB1 > Wii U > PS4 > Vita. I won't get into HH's in the OP, but here are my reasons for XB1 being top dog.

  • The Xbox brand is much stronger than people realize. According to google trends the XBox name was googled more than the Wii + Wii U & PS3 + PS4. Obviously, this doesn't guarantee anything but back in 2004 (farthest you can go back) PS2 was the winner based on google searches. Last gen? Wii was the most searched. DS also beat the PSP & 3DS easily wins over the Vita in terms of searches. Halo is also a very strong brand and is searched way more than any Nintendo or Sony series besides for...Pokemon. (Who would've thought?)
  • Microsoft has loads of money to spend and will surely market the crap out of the XB1. $1 Billion? Wouldn't surprise me. I've already seen XB1 adds in the movie theater.
  • Microsoft seems to have a concrete plan in place to make the XB1 succeed. They have been creating new series as well as buying exclusive 3rd party games. I expect this to continue and they will build up their 1st party games. They also may release a new gameplay peripheral such as Illumiroom which could spark interest in the system. Kinect should still sell systems as well.

Next, things against the PS4...history.

  • The most powerful system has never won a generation...ever. Why? Who knows. You can't say it's because of price though because the PS1 & PS2 dominated despite not being the lowest priced system.
  • Ever since the PS1, the "normal" system has never won a generation. What I mean by "normal" is a system that doesn't do much different besides for being more powerful. I believe many factors helped the original PS's win but some of the bigger factors were the incorporation of a CD & DVD player. The PS3 never had that "special" thing due to bluray not taking off. PS4 also has nothing that sticks out. (For now)
  • Sony isn't in the best position to get into a price war with Microsoft or Nintendo. This could hurt them in the longrun.

Finally, why will Wii U outsell PS4?

  • I believe that Nintendo actually can make something of the Gamepad. I think this will begin with Wii Party U. I also fully expect some type of Pokemon game that could be a huge hit if done right.
  • Nintendo has the biggest series in the industry which they can rely heavily on.
  • The price is cheaper than the PS4 which will help.

Anyone on this site actually agree?

PS2 was "normal" and was the best selling console of all time.

Sir, you just lost.

Going by the pre-order numbers, I think you're wrong. M$ been rejected by the Asian market. Playstation is pretty strong in Europe too. so That leaves the NA market and parts of the UK.

Historically, people prefer to buy specialized products, not all-in-ones, aside from a couple key specific items (like phones). And you can't say consoles are like that because even the wii was specifically just gaming, and beat both the other multimedia stations.

Oh... And the smartphones are actually a very good exemple of why you are wrong with this statement (even if you want to ignore them)... People wants to buy what is the most effective for them (other than fanboys...) and if a device is doing that, they'll go for it (I'm not saying the Xbox One is doing it as we do not know yet, but this is what Microsoft's vision is).

People buy all-in-one phones for CONVENIENCE in traveling.

The wii, a specialized console at near 200$ won last gen, pretty much. They made over 10 billion $.

Being an all in one console is not being effective at anything. It's just a clusterfuck of mismatched ambitions. A good synergy was ps2 having dvd, ps1 having cd, and ps3 having bluray. the console pushes the tech, and the tech pushes the console.

XB1 has cloud, and bluray, and digital, and remote play, and tvs, and dvr, and gestures, and voice control, and smart glass...it's a veritable mess of conflicting products thrown together into one giant spaghetti casserole.

The biggest problem? Each of those features is more easily accomplished by separate devices, and likely for a cheaper cost. The only thing they have strength in? Gaming. And they're charging gamers for literally everything gamers don't want.

It's very possible for the Xbox One to win if it is a huge success in America and for that to happen beyond what it already is it needs to have a hit with Kinect and the media capabilities. If it does that and sells about 55 mil in America then it has a chance.

@theprof00
Everything you stated is what you want to happen.

are you talking about xbox 1 or XBONE...because ps2 whoop xbox ass big time

your predictions are wayoff we don't know it will sell....i preorder 2 ps4 and i not intersted xbox at all..games are great but what's a point when my titan pc can run all 3rd party games from xbox one...why should i downgrade to slow console with little hope it will run 1080p with aa16...i am a gamer i care about games only that matter to me..and ps4 games does have the creativity and fun in it....

and another note this console war is way over since ps2 lauch...

Well theres certainly a lot of time left and things can easily change. Just look at the mess the PS3 was in when it launched... many wrote it off. Yes they lost market share but they did pull it back.

MS at least screwed up before launch. Lots of time for them to rectify it. So anything is possible, but if they don't sort out their messaging they will struggle, just like the Wii-u did.

I think first to market(s) will certainly have more of an impact this time around... specifically outside USA, so that is also going to have an impact i feel.

Making an indie game : Dead of Day!

Very unlikely. Sony is off to a good start and has tons of dedicated customers even the trainwreck the PS3 was in the first years could not stop them from being relevant.

PS4>>XBone>Wiiu

@tuscan
no dude those are facts.
I've been really easy on xb1. I don't even call it the derogatory xbone, but this is the truth. xb1 needs to be shelved and completely redone. right now they are caught in a sunk costs fallacy. they will push this out even though their big vision of digital is completely down the drain and cancelled.
tv being a draw? other products already do it! apple, samsung, google.
to borrow a quote from a certain someone, buckle your seatbelts..its gunna be a BUMPY RIDE.
