WiiU = new gen just like Wii. Next Gen = PS4 and XboxOne.
However they are all in Generation 8.
It is also the next generation of Nintendo Consoles.
You are asking the wrong question.
Furthermore if your criteria for next-gen is merely something that is like the PS4 and XBone then of course the WiiU isn't next-gen, because it is different. If i chose to define next gen as improved efficiency, low power consumption, SSD, optional HDD, asymmetric gameplay, latency free second screen play with a fantastic integrated social network and free online then neither the PS4 or the XBone qualify.
Alas, neither of us get to choose a meaning for "next-generation", it's already got one.
