Healthy French Fries Recipe You’ll Love

There’s something about a batch of classic French fries that’s always tempting, especially for anyone who is trying to stay lean. We know French fries are typically bathed in unhealthy fats and doused in salt, making them a poor food choice for any dieter (and anyone trying to stay away from heart disease!).

What many people may not know is that ½ cup of white potatoes will actually raise your blood sugar more rapidly than one teaspoon of table sugar.1 This is not just bad news for diabetics. When you consume foods that have such a rapid glycemic response, your body reacts to this unnatural spike of blood sugar and insulin, which then drops your blood sugar. It releases hormones to help rebalance blood sugar levels and free fatty acid concentrations rise2. It’s thought that physiological events such as these associated with high-GI foods may promote increased food intake and increased fat storage3.

Want some good news? What if I told you that you could make your own healthy fries out of a vegetable that is super low in calories, and high in fiber, that can actually help you lose weight? That’s right!… Jicama is an excellent source of oligofructose inulin, a nondigestible carbohydrate that has a significantly lower caloric value than most dietary carbohydrates4.

Jicama is a taproot vegetable in the bean family. The vegetable has a crisp and crunchy texture, and tastes like an earthy, mildly sweet apple. When cut into strips and baked, it maintains a crunchy texture and looks just like the “real” thing. Unlike traditional French fries, these healthy jicama fries make a guilt-free snack or side dish that you can feel good about eating!

Healthy French Fries Recipe – Ingredients

  • 1 Jicama root
  • 1 Tbsp of mixed seasonings of choice (garlic powder, chili powder, paprika, etc.)
  • Sprinkle of sea salt
  • 1 Tsp of olive oil

Healthy French Fries Recipe – Preparation

1. Using a vegetable peeler or paring knife, remove the papery-thin peel of the jicama root.

2. When you have cleanly removed all of the peel, slice the jicama into flat rounds about ¾ inch thick, and then cut them up into strips resembling steak fries.

3. Lay your jicama strips out in one layer on a non-stick baking sheet, and prepare your seasonings.

4. Mix the seasonings in a small bowl and sprinkle them over the jicama strips as evenly as possible. Using an oil mister, apply a thin coat of olive oil. If you don’t have a mister, just drizzle the olive oil over the jicama. If need be, toss the fries around on the baking sheet to even out the seasonings and oil.

5. Bake the seasoned jicama fries in the oven at 375? F for up to 15 minutes on each side, until they are golden-brown and crisp. Enjoy!

Hope you enjoy this healthy jicama French fry recipe – let us know if you try it out!

I usually ask for no salt. Because Mcdonalds fries are still just as good. Even Burger King fries. The only downside to Burger King fries is that I ask them to double cook them.Gives you a custardy inside, and nice crisp outside.

If I can, I will skip the condiments, which is huge I think.

I haven't had fries in forever it seems.  I will likely try out this recipe and see if it is any good.   And yes it is always huge to skip the condiments :P  Condiments and dressings have a lot of calories as well as fats in them.  BBQ and Ketchup i believe is more at a minimum when cooking if used in small dose.

That is what my Sergeant in the Army said. He never had condiments or anything that needed condiments to taste good, such as Hamburgers. He was super skinny and could run forever. Never worked out. Hmmm... Tall as well though, so that helped.

Fries are good dude! Once a month at least. They have safer oil these days, and a few will not hurt your nearly perfect physique. I assume you are perfect that is, I have never seen you in real life through your window on.....street.

Nah I dont believe in perfect :P And oh yeah i do have cheat days.  But it is rarely and i usually pick pizza when i cheat XD lol

If he is tall and skinny he could just be an ectomorph meaning he has a high metabolism.  A good way of judging that is if he has little muscle tone (unless he works out).  What body type you are plays a big role in your eating habits and weight so it is good to know what body type you are.

I am randomly in the 5th day of a modified juice fast (also doing protien shakes using coconut water after work outs and I had clear broth twice) and I want those fries. So. Bad.

I have no idea how this root tastes, but the seasonig is great. Sea salt is awesome. An awesome, yet very simple potato recipe (I know this article is about avoiding potato, but whatever):

1. Clean the potatoes
2. Cut them in half
3. Brush them (literally, use a brush) with a bit of oil (In Germany we use sunflower, but I'm pretty sure you can use any oil that doesn't burn at 180°C) on both sides
4. Lay them down on the cut side and sprinkle some sea salt on top
5. Bake them for 30 minutes at 180°C

Soo good. You can even eat the skin,

I love Coconut Water XD  What protein powder are you using?  I'd recommend you trying Optimun Nutrition Chocolate 100% Oat Whey if you haven't tried it and are looking for a different kind.

And these fries are healthy for you without all the unhealthy fat so yes you can make it if you want :)  I'm assuming there is some carbs in it so it would be recommended to make it before your workout though.

I'll check out the protien powder you mentioned... have a large bag of muscle milk that I regret owning that me and the wife have been trying to get through.  Looking forward to making these on Friday when I start back up on real food.

Muscle milk is pretty good as well depending on the flavor.  I think muscle milk is pretty good for bulking up and adding muscle.  One of the better brands for sure.

jicama root is not really common in germany (maybe not in most parts of europe), i could not even say how it tastes right now lol. i believe i ate it few times but really no clue what it tastes like.
