It was big back in days, that went on to live in lot of older Zelda and Tomb Raider games that had those mechanics.

The hardcore Roguelike NetHack and it's spinoffs actually has a series of levels based on Sokoban: https://nethackwiki.com/wiki/Sokoban

Oh, didn't know that - admittedly, I was never that much into NetHack.

I really liked Sokoban back in days, I had to play it on friends PC, since it was not on Amiga (and for some reason I completely missed that it was on C64 years before that, but I already sold my C64)...but it was later with A Link to the Past and Tomb Raider that I think its core gameplay went into mainstream.

The first round of gaming news of the week. DSOGaming hasn’t posted anything interesting today, so I’ve decided to post a few articles from the last days:

SALES/PLAYER COUNTS & DEALS

Steam’s Top 10

(Click here for the Top 100)

A new Frostpunk game is coming 'as early as 2027' after Frostpunk 2 spearheaded the 'highest sales in the company's history'
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/city-builder/a-new-frostpunk-game-is-coming-as-early-as-2027-after-frostpunk-2-spearheaded-the-highest-sales-in-the-companys-history/
2024 was a good year for 11 Bit Studios. With a generated revenue of PLN 140.54 million (£28.21 million), an 168.9% increase year on year, "marking the highest sales in the company's history". Mostly thanks to the release of Frostpunk 2, according to an investor report. So it's no wonder that the biggest takeaway from all of this is that there needs to be more Frostpunk games.
"The sharp increase in 11 Bit Studios’ revenue in 2024 was primarily driven by new game releases during the period, led by Frostpunk 2," the report says. "By the end of December, we sold 592,000 copies of the game, generating revenue of PLN 69.73 million (£14 million)," Przemysław Marszał, president of the management board of the company, adds.
But it has to be said that all this success isn't solely down to Frostpunk 2. Legacy games like Frostpunk and This War of Mine apparently also performed well. Together, they accounted for PLN 35.75 million (£7.18 million) in revenue, a 13.7% increase from 2023. But Frostpunk was probably helped along by Frostpunk 2 hype.
With this success in mind, the studio confirmed that it will be carrying on support for Frostpunk 2 with upcoming DLCs and a couple of new features, as well as teasing the next Frostpunk game: "We intend to diversify both the scale of our projects and their development timelines. This also means capitalising on near-term, financially attractive opportunities. This underlies our decision to initiate production on the next project set in the Frostpunk universe, which we plan to launch as early as 2027."
However, despite the success of Frostpunk 2 and the exciting prospect of yet another game in the pipeline, 11 Bit Studios still failed to meet expectations. The sales growth did not translate into a corresponding increase in margins as the company recorded an operating loss of PLN 2.84 million (£570,000).

The PCGamer news. This time, there’s been so many news these past days that I’ve decided to only post the articles from the last 24 hours:

https://www.pcgamer.com/games/rpg/super-robot-wars-y-pits-gundams-against-godzilla-in-a-huge-showcase-and-release-date-announcement-trailer/
The long dark era of Super Robot Wars games being Japanese-only releases is over, the curse shattered by the enormous anniversary blowout game Super Robot Wars 30. Now, Super Robot Wars Y, second in the very long-running strategy RPG/interactive fanfiction franchise to get a global release has a release date, and it's just a few months away.

Here we go: The Oblivion remaster will be officially unveiled tomorrow
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/rpg/here-we-go-the-oblivion-remaster-will-be-officially-unveiled-tomorrow/
We thought—we expected, we hoped—that the long-awaited Oblivion remaster would be out today. Apparently it will not—but tomorrow? Tomorrow is a different day.
What exactly will happen tomorrow isn't perfectly clear, but there will at the very least be a reveal of the Oblivion remaster. Bethesda Softworks dropped this little note today on social media:
>> That tomorrow is today. Shikamo has a thread about it and PCGamer has a Live article to learn all about it.

The pitch of Diablo 4's next season is 'becoming the boss,' which is a polite way to describe killing a giant skeleton and stealing its death laser powers for yourself
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/rpg/the-pitch-of-diablo-4s-next-season-is-becoming-the-boss-which-is-a-polite-way-to-describe-killing-a-giant-skeleton-and-stealing-its-death-laser-powers-for-yourself/
Today Blizzard dropped a fresh pile of details about Belial's Return, Diablo 4's next season. As it says on the tin, the big bad in Sanctuary's immediate future is Belial, the Lord of Lies, one of Diablo's more powerful demons who's been absent since players kicked him out of Kehjistan back in Diablo 3. And players won't just be fighting him. Season 8's major new mechanic is boss powers, which will let players steal abilities from vanquished bosses—Belial included—and work them into their own builds.
>> But that’s not all. This season 8 should be more difficult and, apparently, coming up with new menacing names for activities is “probably one of the most difficult design challenges”.

Delightful undersea soulslike Another Crab's Treasure just got a huge 'Year Of The Crab' update featuring a fully remixed New Game Plus
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/action/delightful-undersea-soulslike-another-crabs-treasure-just-got-a-huge-year-of-the-crab-update-featuring-a-fully-remixed-new-game-plus/
What's better than a heaping serving of premium crab? A second round, entirely free. Aggro Crab's seafloor Sekiro-like Another Crab's Treasure was a pleasure to play when it rolled out last year, with our deep-diver Abbie Stone giving it a very positive 80% review last April. It might be worth mentally adding a few points to that, thanks to a huge update that just launched.
You can see a quick breakdown of what the big Year Of The Crab update entails in the trailer below or the full patch notes here, but the long and short of it is that this includes almost every idea, feature and bit of content that the studio wanted to cram into the game at launch, but didn't have the time, budget or firm orange shell for.

Fallout 1 lead Tim Cain says the marketing department wanted him to make it real-time 'because of Diablo,' but he got them to back off when he told them how much it would cost
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/fallout/fallout-1-lead-tim-cain-says-the-marketing-department-wanted-him-to-make-it-real-time-because-of-diablo-but-he-got-them-to-back-off-when-he-told-them-how-much-it-would-cost/
In a new vlog on his YouTube channel, veteran RPG designer and Fallout 1 lead Tim Cain shared one of those great "told you so" anecdotes of gaming history: Interplay's marketing department apparently hounded Cain to rebuild Fallout to be more like Diablo, rather than the turn-based RPG we got.

Marvel Rivals' hero gallery UI used to look a lot cooler—but also a lot harder to use
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/fps/marvel-rivals-hero-gallery-ui-used-to-look-a-lot-cooler-but-also-a-lot-harder-to-use/
I'm a comic book nut, but I stay away from Marvel Rivals to keep my blood pressure in check. I do love the radical, supremely over-the-top character designs that NetEase landed on for Marvel's coterie of costumed heroes, though. You might be surprised to learn that the game used to be even more stylized—so much so that finding a hero before a match was borderline obnoxious.

Overwatch 2 Season 16 finally adds hero bans to competitive play, and it's really brought out the vindictive side of players: 'He’s an annoying unkillable pain in the ass'

Every Overwatch player has that one hero that they can't stand. The hero that boils their blood and fills them with a kind of rage that is unmatched in every other avenue of their life. For me, it's Mercy, but every player has their own arch-nemesis in this game, and now we can all do something about it.
Overwatch 2 Season 16 is introducing hero bans, finally. At the beginning of every competitive match, players will vote to remove up to four heroes from play (two per team, but no more than two per role).

The Outlast Trials Season 3 launches today, adding a new enemy and the ability to punish your friends in handmade trials

The Outlast Trials is rolling out its third season today, adding yet another layer of torture to the Murkoff facility. For any Reagents with a therapy level of 99, you'll be able to enter "Project: Relapse" in exchange for reverting your level back to zero. So basically, you're back to square one and won't be escaping the facility any time soon.

REPO's next update will include matchmaking and expressions, so you no longer have to rely on shouting at your friends when they've smashed a valuable

In a recent Q&A video, the developers of REPO shared some information on what to expect from the next update for the game. That's alongside information about modding, details on new multiplayer features, new customisation for your robot, and information on the upcoming level.

As someone commented sarcastically - "The elegance of a Bethesda game combined with the smoothness of UE5". ;)

Seriously though, it does look pretty good - pity I didn't care for Oblivion much, finding it at the time to be a step back from Morrowind.

Gamer's Nexus made a documentary about the effects of the Trump tariffs on PC gaming, and the wider PC industry in general:

It's a sweet 3 hours long, so plan in in advance for this double-feature.

Spoiler!

TL;DW: Companies won't come to the US to produce things there since there's wayyy too much volatility in the US due to Trump constantly announcing and then pausing and unpausing the tariffs that the companies in the video rather not ship to the US AT ALL anymore rather than putting up production facilities in the US to get around the tariffs, tariffs which are so punitive they can't make any profit at all anymore in the US.

And even if they put the production in the US, they still have THEIR suppliers and raw material sources to consider, which are all tariffed either way, so unless they would move to the US too, it wouldn't get much cheaper anyway.

Conclusion: everything that will still sell in the US will get about twice as expensive if all the tariffs that have been announced get into action.

One of the worst-kept secrets in videogames finally broke cover today, with Bethesda both revealing and shadow-dropping the remaster of The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion. The game comes with a $50 price tag (and is also available on Game Pass), which some weren't expecting, but despite that has instantly shot to the top of Steam's best-seller list.
>> And it must have sold quite a fair share of copies, since PCGamer also has an article about reaching 120,000 concurrent players, and SteamDB says it went past that to over 180K.

MODS, EMULATORS & FAN PROJECTS

Here are the first cool mods for Oblivion Remastered
https://www.dsogaming.com/mods/here-are-the-first-cool-mods-for-oblivion-remastered/
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered has just been released, and its first cool mods have appeared online. So, let’s see what you can download in order to improve your gaming experience.
The first mod that a lot of players will want to use is this one. In the remaster/remake, the devs changed the Male/Female setting in character customization to Body 1/2. This was an unnecessary change. So, to get back to Male/Female, you’ll have to use this mod.
Another cool mod is the Ultra+ Mod. This mod aims to improve the visuals of the game. To be more precise, it improves the fog quality, fixes fog ghosting and fixes fog artifacting against the sky. It also enables fog in Lumen for GI and reflections. Plus, it increases the quality of lighting and reflections. Oh, and it also adds support for Ray Reconstruction.
Oblivion Remastered HQ Music is a mod that brings high-quality music to the game. Each track has been remastered from the original OST with improved clarity, dynamics, and balanced volume.
Then we have a mod that enables every creature and NPC to catch on fire from open flames. This is a cool mod that can enhance the game’s combat. After all, it allows you to set some fire traps. So, make sure to download it from this link. Although the game does not have a Photomode, this mod attempts to add one. It’s simple, but some of you may find it cool. Just don’t expect it to be as advanced as an official Photomode.
Finally, we have a mod that can increase the amount of stuff you can carry. Another mod increases the amount of money vendors have. As such, you can sell more of your items/weapons to them. We also have a mod that can increase (or decrease) the experience you gain. This will be ideal for those who hate grinding. There is also a mod that makes all spell effects available for spellmaking/enchanting. The mod also adds some utility spells, and gives access to previously unavailable effects.
>> The article only has one gif for the mod that sets others in fire.

It only took 3 hours for someone to upload the first Oblivion Remastered gooner mod
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/rpg/it-only-took-3-hours-for-someone-to-upload-the-first-oblivion-remastered-gooner-mod/
It's only a matter of time before somebody mods a game to be more horny. Whether it's a remaster, remake, or new release, every game's Nexus Mods page will eventually ensure that, if you're the type of individual who can't spend a moment without seeing something lewd, your condition won't become critical. What ramifications this will have for society is still up in the air, but the fact remains: If it's playable, it'll get gooner mods.
In the case of Oblivion Remastered, it only took three hours.
As last week's leaks had led us to believe, Oblivion Remastered launched as soon as it was announced—shortly before, in fact, because its Steam page went up just after its reveal stream went live. And thanks to Slack messages sent by my colleagues, we can pinpoint precisely when, at approximately 11:18 am EDT, Oblivion Remastered was available to the public and the time-to-pervert-mod clock began to tick.
That countdown ended at 2:27 pm EDT, when Nexus Mod user Bub200 secured a place in history by uploading the Ahegao Short Sword mod.
As gooner mods go, it's fairly tame. Bub200 just slapped some hentai panels onto a short sword texture and called it a day. I'm squinting at the screenshot now and as far as I can tell, there's nary a breast to be seen. Compared to what you'll find in a casual scroll through Skyrim's trending mods, it's practically Puritan—a description I never thought I'd apply to an ahegao face, but here we are.
>> The article has the screenshot mentioned in the article.

Bethesda gave Oblivion Remastered game keys to the entire Skyblivion development team and 'made it clear that they have no intention of shutting down our project'
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/rpg/bethesda-gave-oblivion-remastered-game-keys-to-the-entire-skyblivion-development-team-and-made-it-clear-that-they-have-no-intention-of-shutting-down-our-project/
Fan-made remakes of popular games are a risky thing. You never know when you're going to sink years of your life into a passion project, only to eat a cease and desist letter from an expensive lawyer representing a faceless corporate overlord that forces you to either change it up or shut it down entirely. That seemed like a real risk for Skyblivion, the ambitious, long-running effort to recreate Oblivion in the Skyrim engine, especially after it became clear that Bethesda was working on its own official Oblivion remaster.
Happily, in this case the outcome was very different: Instead of forcing an end to Skyblivion to protect its commercial interests, Bethesda sent a key for Oblivion Remastered to everyone working on it.
"Huge thanks to our friends @Bethesdastudios.com for their continued support of Skyblivion!" the mod team wrote on X. "As massive fans, we're beyond grateful for the generous gift of Oblivion Remastered game keys for our entire modding team! This means so much to us. Thank you for everything, @Bethesda.net!"
And, to assuage any concerns that this is all a fake-out, the team said in a follow-up message that "Bethesda made it clear that they have no intention of shutting down our project."

If you thought Elder Scrolls fans couldn't eat better: The mega-mod to build all of Morrowind just teased a release that'll make it border Oblivion's setting and add a whole new city
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/the-elder-scrolls/if-you-thought-elder-scrolls-fans-couldnt-eat-better-the-mega-mod-to-build-all-of-morrowind-just-teased-the-update-thatll-make-it-border-oblivions-setting-and-add-a-whole-new-city/
In case the approximately 60,000 Oblivion-related stories we've published in the last 24 hours have escaped you, it's feasting season for Elder Scrolls fans right now. The release of Oblivion Remastered has seen over 120,000 players pour into Cyrodiil at once, and I suspect it might beat that record this coming weekend.
But you know what? Whatever. Because as if that wasn't enough, the good folks over at Tamriel Rebuilt—the Morrowind mega-mod that aims to build the entire Morrowind province mainland into the game—also chose yesterday to tease the release of its next big update: Grasping Fortune.

You can now play as Reno & Rude in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth
https://www.dsogaming.com/mods/you-can-now-play-as-reno-rude-in-final-fantasy-7-rebirth/
Modder ‘DOD3NieR’ has released an amazing mod for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth that lets you play as Reno and Rude. This mod replaces Cloud and Tifa with these two Turks, and both of them have their own unique skills and moves.
Going into more details, players can hold normal attack to perform Haymaker for Rude and Counterattack for Reno. They can also use “Unbridled Strength” till “Rise and Fall” to access more normal attacks.
The bad news is that the mod does not replace the voices of Cloud and Tifa. As such, you will hear Reno or Rude with Tifa’s voice. This is kind of a bummer for such a mod. Yes, it’s a really cool mod. But man, it would have been even better if it had AI voices for Reno and Rude.
You can go ahead and download the mod from this link. At the end of the article, you can also find a video for it. This video will give you a pretty good idea of what you can expect from it.
Speaking of FF7 Rebirth, I also suggest FF7RebirthFix. This mod lets you adjust the gameplay FOV, unlocks the framerate, and adds support for ultrawide or narrower displays. Its latest version also improves shadow cascades. Thus, you won’t see shadows constantly changing right in front of you.
