To be fair, we are at the point where even CryEngine, idTech, Frostbite and Unreal pretty much scales across all hardware... From phones to high-end PC's.

I mean it is Counter Strike, so no one expects advanced visuals, but that doesn't mean they can't add extra visuals on top. - Any serious competitive Counter Strike player will drop settings to absolute lowest anyway, but for more casual players? More isn't a bad thing.

My issue isn't actually with Counter Strike specifically though, I personally have no care for that game, it's the engine itself, I want Valve to push that engine harder.

True. Source 2 is a bit eh when compared to other modern engines. Its just that, at this point idc about all that so long as they keep releasing quality games. Valve were seemingly on a hiatus for so many years are were super slow to get anything out until recently. So much so I'd rather them work on things I want to play, than mess around too much with engines. And so I'm just glad we're finally getting some new games from them. And who knows maybe Valve can count to three and we get a new L4D, Portal and HL3 in our lifetimes xD

Also been waiting for a proper update for CS for years and really happy we finally got one. So maybe bias comes into play lol.

Valve is just a very very small team. - Their flat organization during the 2010's is just a very inefficient method to allocate work to employees as employees will naturally gravitate to work they want to do, rather than what needs to be done... And if you don't have everyone on the same page, then nothing gets done.

360 employees to build games, build game engines, build Steam, support Steam... Work with 3rd parties.
But also output gaming hardware like handhelds, desktops, controllers? That's actually impressive when you think about it... But it will always mean that game output will be slower.

Thats a pretty insane deal. Always wanted to try a SFF, and didn't know Fractal did mini-ITX cases.

With a new build, you may as well look into getting Zen 4 and AM5. You can get a 7600 for under £189 with code on Ebay. Which is pretty crazy as it mostly has the same performance as a 5800X3D at 65W, and you have the option to slot in a Zen 5 CPU down the line.

I'm 99% sure I'll go with a 7600X because it's almost 100€ less than a 13600K and, while the later is very good, it's not good enough to justify the extra cost.

My only problem is the motherboard. I have decided almost everything else, but I'm stuck in that stage of the planning because I always end eyeing a X670E part, and paying more for the motherboard than for the CPU feels wrong.

I am going to assume you are just building a moderately equipped rig and just throwing a little bit of money at it every few years?

Otherwise, I would personally consider the Ryzen 7700/7700X to be the go with it's 2x extra cores... Would offer much longer system longevity... I had a 6-core rig in 2010, coming up on 15 years soon... And whilst that is fine today, I feel in a few years time it will struggle, especially if you do any multi-tasking... Or play a ton of CIV.

Don't be afraid to spend big on an AMD board, I always have, you are paying for features, plus you keep it around for much longer, AM6 is many many years away.

Steam will ditch Windows 7 and 8 support next year
https://www.pcgamer.com/steam-will-ditch-windows-7-and-8-support-next-year/
If you're reading this on a PC running Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows 8.1, then it's bad news, I'm afraid: Steam won't work on your computer next year. Valve announced as much today, and it's all because of Google Chrome.
"The newest features in Steam rely on an embedded version of Google Chrome, which no longer functions on older versions of Windows," Valve's typically curt announcement reads. "In addition, future versions of Steam will require Windows feature and security updates only present in Windows 10 and above."
If you are running Windows 7 or 8 to play games, then you're extremely in the minority. According to Steam's February Hardware and Software Survey, only 0.09% of users run Windows 7, while 1.43% use the 64 bit version. It's less than half a percent for Windows 8.1, too.

This mod that automatically drops all the junk you pick up in Fallout might be the most important ever made
https://www.pcgamer.com/this-mod-that-automatically-drops-all-the-junk-you-pick-up-in-fallout-might-be-the-most-important-ever-made/
Pack it up, modders, we're done. We've scaled the peak, ascended the summit, and hit the outer limit. All previous mods were just a prelude to this, the culmination of the artform: Auto Drop for Fallout: New Vegas from Sweet6Shooter weighs in at about 4 kilobytes, and I think it could save me enough time to write the next great American novel.
We've all spent many, many hours of our lives with Gamebryo, the weird and wobbly engine that's underpinned everything Bethesda has made since The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion, so you'll know that it can sometimes be a little imprecise. Specifically, it's incredibly easy to waggle your crosshair over a burned book, a rusty iron sword, or some other piece of ephemeral junk while you're trying to pick up something actually cool and valuable.
It's never a big problem until you realise you've somehow accumulated 20 kilograms of erlenmeyer flasks and cheese wheels, and you have to laboriously pick through your inventory to dump them all in some dungeon so that you can fast travel back home. It's tedious, disruptive, and makes you feel more like a wandering Collyer brother than the hero of a sprawling RPG. But Auto Drop solves that (at least in New Vegas), forcing your character to drop anything you've marked as junk the second they pick it up, as though suddenly struck by a surge of mental clarity.

Resident Evil 4 remake has a funny Easter egg that lets you skip the first major fight

(...)
It turns out that in R4 remake Capcom has added an easter egg allowing players to skip this encounter. That church bell, it turns out, is visible from various vantage points in the village and, if you hit it successfully with a bullet, it will ring. So you can start the fight, run straight into the house that triggers the appearance of the chainsaw, then immediately clamber out to the roof, dink the bell, and end matters after a few seconds. This chap shows how though, as that's not embeddable, you can see the same clip in the below tweet.

Former Sims lead says men would lie about how they played during focus groups: 'Actually, what you did is you redecorated that bathroom'
https://www.pcgamer.com/former-sims-lead-says-men-would-lie-about-how-they-played-during-focus-groups-actually-what-you-did-is-you-redecorated-that-bathroom/
One reason people play life sims, says former Sims studio head Rod Humble, is that they offer a noncommittal way to explore self-identity. Players can try on lifestyles and experiences they're curious about, but if they feel uncomfortable, they can always hit the eject button by deciding that they're playing a game about their sims rather than as them. That tendency to experiment and then retreat was completely apparent during focus groups, according to Humble, because players would deny doing things he watched them do.

I like the original, dang it, I don't need all these copies! Great examples of the genre like Picayune Dreams and now Boneraiser Minions are really making me change my tune though, and the latter recently released out of early access on March 9 to "Overwhelmingly Positive" reviews on Steam. The gaming industry's biggest convention was cancelled in 2020 and 2022 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, with a scaled back online version hosted in 2021. GameCube and Wii emulator Dolphin is coming to Steam this year
https://www.pcgamer.com/gamecube-and-wii-emulator-dolphin-is-coming-to-steam-this-year/
A year ago I wrote about the Steam Deck being the emulation system of my dreams, and it's only gotten better since then thanks to projects like Emudeck that simplify the process of getting emulators up and running on the handheld. But it can't get any easier than clicking "install" in Steam, and that's soon going to be the reality for Dolphin, the incredible GameCube and Wii emulator I've used to play games like Mario Galaxy and The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker in 4K. It's officially coming to Steam.
>> Great news, but I can't help but wonder if that will bring troubles to Valve with Nintendo once people start talking about how and where to get GC/Wii games to use on that emulator.

Kerbal's creator is back with a new model vehicle sim, says 'early access is not what it used to be'
https://www.pcgamer.com/kerbals-creator-is-back-with-a-new-model-vehicle-sim-says-early-access-is-not-what-it-used-to-be/
In 2021, developer Felipe "HarvesteR" Falanghe, the creator of Kerbal Space Program, launched a new game on Steam called Balsa Model Flight Simulator. His follow-up to Kerbal reflected much of the same spirit as the space sim that eventually became a PC phenomenon: it was open-ended, focused around building and flying your own vehicles, and based on a childhood passion. (...)
The new version of the game revealed today, Kitbash Model Club, broadens the focus from model plans to include building and controlling model boats and cars, too, with a name inspired by Adam Savage and Lucasfilm's model makers. The material itself was always less important than the idea of mashing together cool parts to see what you could build.

Kerbal creator figured out an ingenious way to redesign his new flight sim's map: import it from Cities: Skylines
https://www.pcgamer.com/kerbal-creator-figured-out-an-ingenious-way-to-redesign-his-new-flight-sims-map-import-it-from-cities-skylines/
Tell me an RPG developer used a tabletop roleplaying system to sketch out the design for their new videogame? I sleep. Tell me the creator of Kerbal Space Program used another sim—the most popular city builder of the past decade—to create the map for his model plane flight simulation? Real shit. I can't think of a more PC gaming solution to indie game development.

Something like that. The idea is to get the basis of a new system and take advantage of the longevity of AMD's platforms to upgrade the CPU down the road. Plus also getting a new GPU once AMD/Nvidia or even Intel release something worth it at a reasonable price point (this one will take a while). But that's mostly it, I'm not planning to change the RAM or and other bits.

I've said a few times in the thread that I'd prefer to go with an 8-core CPU to ease my mind. But given the cost of motherboards (by the way, GamersNexus has a rant video about the price and lack of features of new boards) and a 32GB of DDR5 memory kit (I know it's not enough for you, but I'm not such a power user as you are), plus several extra parts like a new CPU cooler and a couple of NVMe drives, I have to make some cuts. That's why I've decided to go with a 7600X and upgrade to an 8-core part in a few years (say 9800X or 10800X or whatever) when they go down in price.

After all, while 6 cores may not be a lot to you, you have to keep in mind that I'm running an i5-4670k CPU. That's 4 cores and 4 threads. Compare that to the 7600X with 50% more cores, three times more threads and a +50% IPC increase plus the extra speed. It wil be a big upgrade for me.

Finally, when it comes to spending big on a motherboard, these are the prices of the ATX sized X670 motherboards in the 3 stores I'll get the different bits from, listed by price:

Only 3 boards have the 7-segment display (I had no idea it was called this way), the Asus ROG Strix X670E-E Gaming Wi-Fi, Asus ROG Crosshair X670E Hero and the MSI MPG X670E CARBON WIFI, and none of those goes below the 500€ mark.

Leaving aside the "well priced" Gigabyte X670 Gaming X AX, I've had two Gigabyte motherboards in my life and both have given me problems, therefore no more Giga boards for me, and seeing the difference in price they have, my apparently better options seem to be the Asus TUF Gaming X670E-Plus or ASRock's X670E PG Ligthning and X670E Pro RS products... and they're 100€ more than the CPU itself .

I'll have to give the B650 boards another look...

Yeah they are a small team, that does a helleva a lot of things. Can imagine a lot people on R&D going on hardware as well as software. And idd pretty crazy output the last few years all considering.. just wished they focused on games though xP Not sure if its a rare thing for them but they outsource work as well, like getting Turtle Rock Studios on CS: Condition Zero and Left for Dead. It took the original Resident Evil 4 a year to hit 3 million sales, but the remake has done it in 2 days
https://www.pcgamer.com/it-took-the-original-resident-evil-4-a-year-to-hit-3-million-sales-but-the-remake-has-done-it-in-2-days/
The latest nostalgic trip into the Resident Evil games of yore is off to a strong start. According to Capcom, the Resident Evil 4 remake hit 3 million sales in only two days—a fact the publisher is naturally quite chuffed about.
The original Resident Evil 4 is a much-loved part of the series, but it took nearly a year for it to hit this sales milestone. It's a strong sign that interest in Resident Evil is as strong as it's ever been, though there are plenty of other factors to consider, like the growing number of gamers and the larger number of platforms the remake launched on. The original only launched on Gamecube and PS2 initially, while the remake is available on PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S and PC.
>> Launching on the GameCube didn't help. Anyway, Zippy6 has made a thread about this milestone.

We all knew this would happen. And to be honest, I was expecting the first nude mod for Ashley to release way sooner. But anyway, as the title suggests, the first nude mod for Resident Evil 4 Remake’s “ballistic girl“, Ashley, is available for download.
Now in case you did not catch it, the “ballistic girl” line is a reference to the original Resident Evil 4 game. In that version, Luis “compliments” Ashley when they first meet. And yes, Capcom removed that line from the remake. However, the company did keep Ashley’s boob physics (so that’s at least something).

Nintendo has revealed 10 minutes of gameplay footage from The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, and we might be slightly jealous. In the video producer Eiji Aonuma directs Link to glide, climb, and fight monsters just like we saw in Breath of the Wild, but he also rewinds time to ride a fallen boulder up to the sky, fuses a stick and a pitchfork into a fancy new polearm (stickfork? I’ma go with stickfork), and utilizes his Ultrahand to freely craft some logs and a propeller into some kind of Hyrulian fanboat.
Nintendo being Nintendo, we may never get to play Tears on PC (except perhaps after some future emulation project), but it’s exciting to think about what kind of impact these sorts of gameplay systems might have on the genre. After all, we might not have had Genshin Impact’s free climbing and wind glider if it weren't for Link’s last adventure. After today's reaction to TotK's fusion system, some devs are already going out of their way to make sure that everyone knows they didn't copy it.

Another shit port from Sony. You would think with a game that is as high of a profile as the last of us, they would bring their A game instead of letting Iron Galaxy handle it but instead, they cheaped out. It does use a lot of Vram as par for the course of AMD sponsored titles but it also hammers the CPU greatly and uses a lot of system ram as well over 20+GB from what I have seen.

Really though if Sony insists on putting super low effort onto their PC ports, then I'll likely won't be buying them in the future until they go into big discount mode even if my 4090 can run it.

I dunno why they thought it was a stellar idea to let Iron Galaxy handle one of their biggest high profile ports.

Nixxes would have been a far, far better choice, but no, let's roll with a studio that's not exactly got a good track record of ports on PC. Also the system requirements are getting stupid now, especially with the VRAM. Feels like we've gone back to 2010 again, where we need far beefier hw to manage what a console could 1-2 gens ago, or even current gen.
