Even though I believe AMD should make it easier to differentiate the cards by its name, like they did with the 6800 and the 6800XT, not too different from Nvidia's regular and Ti cards), I actually prefer this option than going with the 7950XT name we saw rumored.
At least it leaves room for the (inevitable) revision model in a year or so.

I think the 7950XT name is reserved for the rumored Navi 3X, which is supposed to come with 2 GPU chips or chiplets instead of just one - but it's a smaller one to not have the TDP explode.

I had a lot of reactions about that.

I don't remember reading anything about that. Could you post a link to that rumor?

This card should be a Radeon Pro instead of a gaming GPU however. But that doesn't mean there's no chance that AMD won't release an offshot of that card to the gaming market later down the road if it really is a Radeon Pro.

Lol what a shit show... All the engineering effort that went into creating the 4090... A GPU that's 70% faster than a 3090 in Raster while maintaining sub 60C while barely ramping up the fans... Cucked by the need to put a shitty connector onto it that has the potential to at best, to turn your GPU into a brick or at worst... Set your PC on fire...

I'm going to play devil's advocade here: the 3090Ti launched with the same 16-pin connector and adapters, and it actually used more power than a 4090, yet we didn't have so many stories about this at the same time. So yeah, the adapters may not be good enough, but there seems to be something else at play. I wonder if the fixed transients, that cause smaller power spikes at the expense of them lasting a bit longer, may have something to do with it.

In any case, it may be a good idea to way until you can get a new PSU with a 16-pin power conector before getting a 4090 card. You may save yourself some troubles.

To my knowledge there was not a single adapter for 3090TI that was not 3x8pin too 12 pin while the 4090 come with a 4x8pin to 12 pin so that would lead me to believe that the 4090 is capable of pulling a lot more power then 3090TI through the 12 pin.  Do you know of a case 3090TI using a 4x8 pin to 12 pin adapter?

The Wednesday news:

SALES /PLAYER COUNT & DEALS

The Steam Halloween Sale is live
https://www.pcgamer.com/steam-halloween-sale-2022/
Halloween is still a week away, but the sweet treats are here already—on Steam, at least, where the Steam Scream Fest is now underway.
Predictably, Steam's big Halloween extravaganza is focused on the spooky and the scary: Horror, survival horror, dark fantasy, Lovecraftian tales, and other forms of supernatural shenanigans. A number of games holding seasonal events will also be spotlighted during the sale.
>> If you're not from the US and see a good deal, grab it now. You'll understand in a bit. In any case, there's another new deal at Steam:

GOG, that now accepts PayPal Vault, has three new Deals of the Day that will last until Friday:

And Fanatical has a new Star Deal: DEATHLOOP - Deluxe Edition gets a 66% discount during the next 48 hours: https://www.fanatical.com/en/game/deathloop-deluxe-edition.

SOFTWARE & DRIVERS

Steam's recommended prices go way up in many countries: +18% in Europe, +485% in Argentina
https://www.pcgamer.com/steams-recommended-prices-go-way-up-in-many-countries-18-in-europe-485-in-argentina/
Valve has made changes to its regional pricing recommendation system that should make life easier for developers, but it could also lead to higher prices for games in some countries.
Steam currently supports 39 different currencies, and that's a lot of monies for developers to deal with, especially small indies. As Valve said in today's announcement, it's easy enough to decide you're going to charge $20 for your latest release, but what's it going to cost in Qatari riyals or Norwegian krone? Rather than forcing everyone to horse around with manual exchange rate conversions, Steam makes recommendations across all currencies, based on your US dollar pricing.
(...)
That all seems quite reasonable. But the new price recommendations, shared on Twitter by SteamDB, reflect some astonishing increases. On a $59.99 game, for instance, the recommended price in Turkish lira jumped from ₺92 to ₺510, a 454% increase. The Argentine peso went up even more, from AR$649 to AR$3800, an increase of 485%. Other increases are less egregious but still noteworthy: Steam's recommended prices in Russian rubles are up 75%, the Indian rupee 80%, the Kazakhstani tenge increased by 97%, and the Polish zloty went up by 28%. Even my beloved Canadian dollar went up, although by a more inflation-correlated 13%.
>> Well, that sucks. But, on a more positive side, it will stop my backlog from growing too much, which is positive for me.

MODS, EMULATORS & FAN PROJECTS

Here is Half-Life re-imagined as a classic Doom game
https://www.dsogaming.com/mods/here-is-half-life-re-imagined-as-a-classic-doom-game/
Now here is something really cool. Modder ‘LoliKololi’ has released a mod that attempts to re-imagine the original Half-Life as a classic Doom game.
In short, this is a GZDoom total conversion mod for Doom, and it looks retro-cool. Surprisingly enough, it also retains the art style of Half-Life, and feels exactly like what you’d expect from an HL demake in the Doom Engine.

The Witcher Mod upscales all videos & in-game cutscenes to 4K using AI
https://www.dsogaming.com/mods/the-witcher-mod-upscales-all-videos-and-in-game-cutscenes-to-4k-using-ai/
Back in March 2021, we shared a mod that, by using AI techniques, upscaled the intro and outro of The Witcher. However, and since this mod is no longer available, it’s time to share another one.
Created by modder ‘Neato’, this mod will upscale all videos and in-game cutscenes to 4K.
Going into more details, Neato used the Proteus V3 and Artemis High Quality AI models in order to upscale these videos. The modder has also removed artifacts, visual bugs and upscale errors via manual touch-ups, and removed black bars from the top & bottom. Furthermore, Neato took a lot of care to preserve the details and sharpness of the original movies.

After 18 years, the precursor to Garry's Mod appears on Steam
https://www.pcgamer.com/after-18-years-the-precursor-to-garrys-mod-appears-on-steam/
We all know Garry's Mod, the landmark physics sandbox mod for Valve's Source Engine that can be used for everything from creating custom game modes to messing around with Half-Life 2 characters. Since it first appeared in 2004, and was published by Valve as a standalone game in 2006, Garry's Mod has sold over 18 million copies, all under a steady $10 price tag.
But before Garry's Mod there was JBMod (Steam page), the first ever mod for the Source Engine. The mod was created to enable the physics gun (or physgun), a tool cut from Half-Life 2 that operated similarly to the gravity gun, allowing players to pick up and manipulate items using a blue beam of light.
As sometimes happens with mod projects, work on JBMod by its creator, JB55 (JackBox55), didn't last long before being passed off to another modder, but Garry Newman used JBMod as a source of inspiration, experimenting with his own mod to spawn manhacks and create rocket launchers that fired melons. Soon Garry's Mod (then known as GMod) had more features like the physgun and the ability to rope or weld objects together, and eventually its famous sandbox map, gm_construct, to serve as a physics playground.
Despite initial criticism that Garry's Mod was too similar to JBMod, players began flocking to Newman's sandbox. The modders working on JBMod couldn't keep up with Garry's Mod's growing list of features, and eventually development stopped altogether.
Better late than never, I guess: As spotted by PCGamesN, JBMod has finally appeared on Steam, 18 years later. "The initial Steam release brings the original mod from 2004 to a more modern engine. Stay tuned for further updates! As always, JBMod 0.6 is coming soon," reads the mod's Steam page, which doesn't appear to have any official involvement from JBMod's original creator.

Modern Warfare 2 post-credits scene reimagines Call of Duty's most infamous level
https://www.pcgamer.com/modern-warfare-2-post-credits-scene-reimagines-call-of-dutys-most-infamous-level/
When I booted up Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2's campaign last week and was immediately asked to confirm that "I understand" some scenes include "graphic or intense content" before playing, I got a little nervous. The first time I can recall digitally consenting to be traumatized by a videogame was the original 2009 Modern Warfare 2, remembered best for the headlines its infamous mass shooting mission, No Russian, made across the world when it launched.
(...)
It never came, thankfully, but the campaign does eventually depict its own No Russian moment in the form of a post-credits scene that's really easy to miss. Go no further if you haven't finished the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 campaign, because we're diving into the spoiler zone.

Overwatch has had PvE modes for a long time, but none of them are as thrilling as Overwatch 2's Halloween Wrath of the Bride mission.
Wrath of the Bride is a sequel to the Junkenstein's Revenge mode that Overwatch 1 players spent years grinding loot boxes in. A new monster-hunting squad is here: Junker Queen, Sojourn, Ashe, and Kiriko. Each of them are equipped in their Halloween Terror skins and are dropped into a medieval fantasy horror story set in a fictional German town.

Remember Epic's action-Moba that got steamrollered by Fortnite's success? It's back
https://www.pcgamer.com/remember-epics-action-moba-that-got-steamrollered-by-fortnites-success-its-back/
One of the big victims of Fortnite's runaway success was, surprisingly enough, Epic's own videogame: Paragon. First released in 2016 after many years of development, this bombastic thirdperson Moba never quite gained enough of an audience and, when Fortnite took off, Epic decided to pull the plug. It did so in an interesting way though, closing the game but releasing all of its $17 million worth of assets, for free, on the Epic Game Store.
Several games have already been released that make use of Paragon's assets. Fault: Elder Orb has been on Steam since 2020, while Omeda Studios is working on a Moba called Predecessor. So we come full circle to a game that not only uses all of Paragon's assets, but has been granted permission by Epic to use the game's branding—welcome to Paragon: The Overprime.

https://www.pcgamer.com/youll-soon-be-able-to-play-2-age-of-empires-games-from-the-comfort-of-your-sofa/
Age of Empires just celebrated its 25th birthday, and with it a cheeky little livestream that announced that both Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition and Age of Empires 4 are coming to Xbox in 2023. Turns out that's pretty good news for us too, as the PC versions will be getting the extra goodies coming to console.
Both games will be getting cloud gaming support and, more excitingly, controller support and crossplay with our console friends. I can imagine contorting complex RTS controls onto a controller was no easy feat. In an Xbox News Wire post, director of customer voice at World's Edge Emma Bridle acknowledged that it was a "massive task," one which the developer "had to approach carefully and thoughtfully."

Another GeForce RTX 4090 16-pin Adapter Bites The Dust

https://www.tomshardware.com/news/another-geforce-rtx-4090-16-pin-adapter-bites-the-dust

Looks like that's the 4th one... While 4090s have been selling better than expected, I can't imagine there are too many that got sold as of yet so the % of cables that are melting is relatively high. Considering the 30 series FE had an adapter as well as 3090 Tis, there's clearly something wrong. Personally Nvidia should stop selling 4090s at this point so they can get control of the situation. While people are speculating that bending is what's causing this, I really don't think that's the reason cause from the pictures that we have seen, these really aren't aggressive bends. If anything, there's a clamping issue with some of the connector pins that's making them come lose is what my speculation is.

DPI Deviation is worse than I thought

Closer to 800 dpi the better in that test. Interesting test though. Basically just because you set a certain dpi in a mouse doesn't actually mean it's doing that dpi. Depending on the mouse, the dpi could be higher or lower than the target. Seems that logitech mice are consistently meeting their target DPi while most are companies are deviating from it. Of course, the fix is to increase or decrease your DPi if you switch your mouse brand to compensate based on the feel. One thing to note is the higher the dpi, the closer the differences get but it goes to show how some companies calibrate their mice better than others.

4090 Strix review - Beyond Fast with a few big hiccups

With RDNA 3 announcement approaching next week, I may as well get my review out of the way just in case there's a reason for me to return it and boy, idk if I'll ever buy another GPU at launch again after this experience lmao.

The goods:

The card is very well constructed. For $400 above MSRP for the Strix, one would hope so but seriously, it has a lot of aluminum front and back while most other ventors use a mix of plastic and metal. It's very fast reaching around 3.1Ghz depending on the workload which makes it above 100 Teraflops. It's very quiet and cool for a card that's able to draw 450 watts. More often than not, it's well below 60C with the fans barely spinning at 30% during heaviest of games. With a cooler of this size, you would hope so but it does make a big difference in noise between my Strix 3080 and my Strix 4090. You really do get the feeling the cooler was designed for something else entirely. I posted performance charts before but its easily more than double the performance of my Strix 3080 and my 5950x can bottleneck it in some games even at 4k.

The bads:

The 4090 was a lot of firsts for me. This is the first time I bought a Halo card. This is the first time I bought a card at launch. This is the first time I got a new GPU where I had to search to see if I could somehow install an older version of the driver cause of how buggy it was...

Lets talk about this 522 driver and my experience with my 4090. As a rule in PC, you should always uninstall your GPU driver via DDU before putting in a new GPU. So I did that and the first time I booted up my 4090, I got a black screen with my monitor saying no connection. I did a hard reboot and now got display. Alright fair enough... Then I installed the 522 driver. First day, no real issues. Did benchmarks and all that and it was fine. I shutdown my PC and then the issues started to appear on the next day. I ran 3dMark Speedway and after it finished, my display disconnected and I started hearing 4-5 disconnect sounds...

After about 2-3 minutes, I heard 4-5 reconnect sounds and my display came back. I checked event viewer and saw that a) The driver crashed and b) For some reason, all my SSDs disconnected. I was like...

And this is where the issues began, this behaviour happened when I exited overwatch or loaded up Forza Horizon 5 and started playing hotwheels dlc. Sometimes it even rebooted my computer byitself... It's like what the heck? Reinstalling the driver didn't do anything and since this is the only driver for my 4090, couldn't roll back either. After doing a lot of searching through a few days, I found the solution which was to set the GPU to prefer maximum performance in Nvidia control panel. Once I did that and rebooted, boom, no more driver problems but this shouldn't have even been a thing with such an expensive card. Especially one from Nvidia.

The second issue is the cable management. Since my Strix 4090 requires 4x 8 pin cables and it comes with such a bulky adapter, there really is no where for me to put the cables without an adapter. So it really looks like a jumbled mess. One would think Nvidia would find a better solution but alas.

Also the GPU mount the strix comes with is very shat. I bought a cheap rgb one from amazon instead which considering how cheap that is... Goes to show how cheap Asus is being by not including one of those instead.

Other thoughts:

One interesting note is that with my 3080, enabling HAGS and Rebar didn't do much but with my 4090, least in benchmarks like speedway, enabling both seems to give me a boost in FPS by around 5-7 fps. Considering speedway isn't easy to run, that's a pretty big boost. I'll be interested to see reviewers test this out.

Conclusion:

One would think that with Nvidia controlling a large part of the PCB, the power adapters the GPUs come with, the VBIOS the GPUs ship with and the driver stack that 4090 would be a flawless launch. Like how can a company goof up a launch where they control so many aspects of it? But apparently, Nvidia can... Newegg does have a 30 day return policy and while I am happy enough with my 4090 after getting its issues sorted, if AMD has something better, I am open to switching considering how many issues this launch has had.

C'mon! You know that Nvidia can't do that. It would be such a disaster on all fronts that it could actually gamage Nvidia more than any hardware AMD or Intel brings to compete with Ada.

Newegg does have a 30 day return policy and while I am happy enough with my 4090 after getting its issues sorted, if AMD has something better, I am open to switching considering how many issues this launch has had.

Thanks you for your insight. It will be interesting to hear from TallSilhouette, to see if he has also had the same problems as you have.

The driver part really surprises me as you'd expect Nvidia to nail that for such an important release. For all the (deserved) crap AMD and Intel get thrown, Nvidia chose the worst time possible to launch a faulty driver.

Again, thanks for sharing.
