Might be an ok number, but it still doesnt hold a candle to Resident Evil in Japan. It will likely pull similar numbers to Revelations PS3, but nowhere near the numbers of RE5/6 on PS3 and RE:Revelations on the 3DS.

For a western IP it is an amazing achievement.    If TLoU was created instead by Sony Japan or Capcom, it would have sold 500K-1M 1st week.

Keep arguing this. It's still funny.

If a western game sells bad, japan is racist. If a western game sells well, japan is racist because it doesn't outsell RE. One of the biggest IP in Japan.

Tales of, Yakuza, Dynasty Warriors, etc etc etc... don't sell well in the western countries, but there we're super open minded.

And this is how it works.

On this, we agree completely hiska-kun.

This was indeed Sayonara for Umihara Kawase... Well at lest it never had a decent FW in first place before.
Chibi dragon does 500k on Wii! TLOU did way better than I expected.

I was hoping for a higher opening as I'm a fan of the series, but it actually looks like it did pretty well compared to previous releases.

Racist is not the term.  The proper term in this case would be xenophobic.

EDIT: Also MGS sells amazing in Japan and western regions.  Dark Souls sell great in japan, and in western regions.   It really depends on the genre and the themes of the game.  TLoU genre and main theme are mainstream in japan; so the fact that the game does not sell well is a representation of gaming xenophobia.

Really happy that LOU is doing well worldwide... its a fantastic game and deserves to do well. Hope lots of people get to experience it.

Nice to see the Vita holding up... still doing ok... slowly chipping away...
Interesting to see if a ps3 price cut will stimulate the market, might have a chance of getting that little bit closer to the wii

Overall though, shows a new generation is needed to freshen everything up a bit.

Xenophobia and racism go hand in hand. Let's forget about the American businesses that are very successful in Japan though.

Dark Souls sold more in the West than it did in Japan (and there's a bigger disparity for Demon's Souls). An action RPG is still pretty accessible and it was coupled with a refreshing atompshere.

I think this is an outright lie. What Japanese third person shooters and stealth games are selling millions?  Only survival horror titles that does better than Last of Us is Resident Evil and that's only successful because it's a long running franchise with a huge fanbase. Also, zombies and apocalypse are not big themes for Japanese games. Please point out a Japanese title that's very similar and also did much better. Last of Us will likely still make the top 100 sales for the entire year!
