Forums - Nintendo - Is the Wii U this Generations Dreamcast?

Wii U won't go the same way cause Nintendo has a lot more financial ressources then SEGA, will it sell as much as the Wii? No, nobody ever thought that, but it will be more then the N64.

Well the N64 sold around 35 millions, so lets do the math with what we got so far, lets say that the Wii U will be supported for 10 years(wich is unlikely). Ten years are 120 months, lets multiply that for 25,000 wich is somewhat around what the Wii U is selling according to VGChartz. That gives us 3,000,000 now lets add to that what the Wii U has sold so far, according to VGchartz it has sold around 3.15 millions and according to Nintendo it has been something around 4 millions, so lets make it 5 millions for the sake of hope, that gives us a total of 8 millions sells in 10 years.

Now I know sells with get better as the legendary Nintendo franchises arrive to the console, but how much really?

The Gamecube sold around 25 millions, I predict that this will be the worst selling home console from Nintendo with a total lifetime sales of less then 20 millions.

What do you think?

No.

Nintendo has bigger franchises than Sega, and they aren't in a financial black hole like Sega was in the Dreamcast days.

Wii U might be a Gamecube or an N64, but it's no Dreamcast.

I think you're a hundred shades of wrong.

You're failing to take into account the huge boosts Nintendo products see during the holiday season, and using the slowest months of the year as a baseline. Very flawed logic.

I have just been playing Need for Speed Wii U... Amazing game and shows the power of Wii U... And it's an EA title.
The last generation of consoles went for 7-8 years... In that time Wii U will have a ton of games and sell 40 million

I think the xbone will be the next dreamcast

Wii U will be fine, the system sold ~3.5-4.0 mil despite an extremely weak software support by Nintendo and 3rd parties. Nintendo has hinted at a relaunch this coming holiday season just in time for Super Mario 3D world. If Nintendo is smart it would cut the price and unify the SKU to only the 32GB with pre-installed NintendoLand for $299.99 giving extra value to the system. I have a feeling MS will be dropping the X1's price to $400 with no game to match what PS4 is offering. Regardless, Nintendo has chosen not to compete with those systems and be a supplementary system to those consoles as it was with the Wii and GCN. I see the system selling ~10-12 mil units on their annual fiscal report ending March 2014. With the X1 and PS4 surpassing or matching those sales by the same time period if not soon after that date. Still might end up with 45-50mil units sold in 5-6 year span, enough to sustain software support by 1st & 2nd party software, along with Indies and some 3rd party as well.

Not sure if I've misunderstood you here...are you seriously suggesting that the PS4 and One are going to have an installed userbase between 10 and 12m before the end of the financial year..? There's absolutely no chance of that happening, they won't be able to manufacture and ship that many let alone sell them.

10-12m is very doable by 31st March 2015 but there's no way that's possible next year.

PLEASE read my quote again!!! I see MS, Sony and Nintendo selling 10-12 mil units by March 2014!!!

Again, these threads really need to stop. There is literally no way, at all, that the Wii U could in any conceivable fashion wind up being "this generation's Dreamcast". The DC, while was a decent system and had at least a few great games, was overall a miserable failure, so much so that Sega went under as a first party company. Nintendo has too much money in their coffers, and too much business sense, for that to happen. There is no chance in hell the Wii U sells lower than the Gamecube, which itself sold over twice as much as the Dreamcast. In fact I think the Wii U will sell over 40 million lifetime, at least, which would put it well above even the N64.

I don't honestly think any of the three consoles are going to sell as much as they did last gen. I think when it hit, games like Guitar Hero, and games with motion controls, so-called "casual" styled games, etc. were fairly new and big at the time. Thus those consoles sold a lot. Plus a lot of 360s were re-bought due to RROD (lol).

But seriously.......these various threads with different people asking and then debating the SAME basic proposition: "Is Nintendo DOOMED?", really really just need to stop. They're not only ridiculous, but also getting rather tedious. There's only so much that people can sit on internet forums and talk a specific topic in circles, isn't there? Wait what am I saying..........

In my opinion Nintendo should come back to its roots, when its consoles (NES/SNES) could attract all third party support easily. I wouldn't mind if they had released a $500 WiiU($400 console on par with PS4-One + that gamepad ($100 but I still think it's too much for that pad)).

well, since Ps4 and Xone are selling 0 units right now that means they'll end the generation with 0 units so nintendo wins.
