Forums - Nintendo - Is the Wii U this Generations Dreamcast?

In my opinion Nintendo should come back to its roots, when its consoles (NES/SNES) could attract all third party support easily. I wouldn't mind if they had released a $500 WiiU($400 console on par with PS4-One + that gamepad ($100 but I still think it's too much for that pad)).

another delusional who thinks the gamepad adds $100 to the console price.

Not likely since Nintendo won't go under even if the wii u is a fail. Though I think the wii u will do decent numbers, maybe even above gamecube ones.

Wii U won't go the same way cause Nintendo has a lot more financial ressources then SEGA, will it sell as much as the Wii? No, nobody ever thought that, but it will be more then the N64.

Well the N64 sold around 35 millions, so lets do the math with what we got so far, lets say that the Wii U will be supported for 10 years(wich is unlikely). Ten years are 120 months, lets multiply that for 25,000 wich is somewhat around what the Wii U is selling according to VGChartz. That gives us 3,000,000 now lets add to that what the Wii U has sold so far, according to VGchartz it has sold around 3.15 millions and according to Nintendo it has been something around 4 millions, so lets make it 5 millions for the sake of hope, that gives us a total of 8 millions sells in 10 years.

Now I know sells with get better as the legendary Nintendo franchises arrive to the console, but how much really?

The Gamecube sold around 25 millions, I predict that this will be the worst selling home console from Nintendo with a total lifetime sales of less then 20 millions.

What do you think?

I think you're a hundred shades of wrong.

You're failing to take into account the huge boosts Nintendo products see during the holiday season, and using the slowest months of the year as a baseline. Very flawed logic.

Well you're very right, there were many things I didn't take into account, but it was on porpuse. I just wanted to put things on perspective base on the reception the Wii U haves until now, but lets double the numbers I calculated, that's 16 millions, no wait lets tipple them that's 24 millions still somewhat a little less then the GC. I just can't see the Wii U doing much better then that, It's just not so appeling, not at all like the original Wii. By no means I'm bashing on Nintendo I plan on buying one soon enogh can't wait for Smash(The new mechanics look so freaking smooth!) and X(A trully next gen tittle), but sales-wise Wii U looks very bad.

Is the 3DS this generation's Virtual Boy?

No.

And Neither is the Wii U

Games can and should tell stories and share ideas through their mechanics. This is the intrinsic element of the medium and this is how experiences should be crafted in video games. No company does this as well as Nintendo and their echoes from the past.

Not sure if I've misunderstood you here...are you seriously suggesting that the PS4 and One are going to have an installed userbase between 10 and 12m before the end of the financial year..? There's absolutely no chance of that happening, they won't be able to manufacture and ship that many let alone sell them.

10-12m is very doable by 31st March 2015 but there's no way that's possible next year.

PLEASE read my quote again!!! I see MS, Sony and Nintendo selling 10-12 mil units by March 2014!!!

There is no way the PS4 and XOne can sell 10-12 million in their first 4 months.   The Wii only sold 5.5 million.

GC sold 21.4 million.

It's doing terribly so far, yes, and it won't ever do Wii numbers, but I'm sure i will do better than the Gamecube in the long run; the audience has expanded since those days.

I think I should clarify.

I never believed Nintendo would go out of business after Wii U.

My main concern was that Nintendo might pull the system early if the sales continue at such a sluggish pace. Obviously, Super Mario 3d World, X Bayonetta 2 and others look like they will give the system a boost but to make sure they do I wanted to encourage people to pick up the system.

It's worse than ridiculous using the numbers wii u is doing now to calculate lifetime sales. by the same logic 3ds would fall in the same number of your predictions, yet it already crossed the 30M mark. the number used to calculete should be wii u's sales AFTER the big titles are released, basically after 2013 holidays.

Sega was coming off of its 7th year in a row of losses when the Dreamcast launched. Nintendo is coming off of a generation with 10 billion dollars gained.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

To put it simply, Nintendo isn't SEGA. When you are a company like Nintendo, as rich as Nintendo, as successful as Nintendo, if you have 31+ franchises like Nintendo, if you have a loyal fanbase like Nintendo, one console failure won't damn you.

SEGA failed because they didn't have the $$$, they had few franchises that sold, ie. Sonic Adventure and Phantasy Star, maybe Skies of Arcadia and Evolution II but that was it. SEGA didn't have the backing that Nintendo has always had. The Wii U will be successful soon enough. Nintendo just needs to lower the price by 2014 and market it much better. I haven't seen such horrible marketing by Nintendo... EVER. If they play all the right cards Nintendo will beat out XBone easily but, not sure if PS4 will be beat so easily. Sony wasn't the ones converting potential Wii U buyers to XBone buyers. Think about it.
