Forums - Gaming - Can indie developers stop showing off how nerdy they are by making 8-bit/16-bit games?

I support "Fuck this thread" sentiment, yea some are lazy but some of the time saved in graphics is put in gameplay.

Nothing wrong with 8 bit styled graphics. Sure, they don't fit all games, but considering how they help developers save money and they provide a sense of abstract representation, they have a place.

Besides, Terraria is 16 bit.

do we really need like shoot em ups / beat em up styled in 8Bit  games every month for the sake of being indie?

indie shouldn't be about throwbacks to old days , it is supposed to be about pure innovation.

this is backwards thinking.

The progression of game development from 8bit to today can be seen as a linear path...

What could be more innovative than going back to a point in time and diverging from that linear path to make completely different genres never thought of before?

Show me a Terraria made around the days of the SNES....

This board has more fail then a Microsoft rep auguring for DRM policies.

if there is a market then there will be games for that demand.

And 8-16 bit titles showcase some of the most imaginative titles in the past decade.

What's wrong with 8 bit and 16 bit graphics? Still look better than the early 3D graphics. Also, it adds variety to the market.

didn't say they're bad, just the 8-Bit art style for the sake of "Artistic" style is lazy.

why not we go back to the days of "Fixed camera" Horror games style for a change?

or Fixed Camera RPGs ? or 3D platformers (like Mario 64 not Mario Galaxy)  , there is a lot of "Old School" styles that aren't used, yet developers love to use the 8bit

Because they are indie developers and they are working on a tight budget. Sometimes it can be teams of 3-4 people. Super Giant Games for example, the developers of Bastion and Transistor have 10 employees.

2D / 8-Bit games are cheap and easy to develop, while at the same time still being fun as hell and really appealing to the eye.

See? I am not talking about 2D , Bastion is a good example on how to do something that looks good while being on a tight budget, no way I can call Bastion or Braid "Lazy" , Transistor looks good as well.

there is also Dust Elysian Tail, Dragon's Crown, Muramasa ....etc , all those games are indie games and look nothing alike.

it is, if you want to make a good game it will take long, you can make it dirt cheap.

if you dont like it then dont buy it. really, its not like indie devs are a huge part of the industry and its not like ALL of them are doing this. there are a lot who do it yes. but why? its fucking cheap.

You can also say that Hotline Miami and Terraria look nothing alike. They also play nothing alike and they also sound nothing alike.

I dont see the difference between devs releasing 8-bit and 16-bit inspired games and devs releasing 2D sidescrollers. I mean Braid, Dust, Dragon's Crown and Muramasa are all technically the same - They are all 2D Sidescrollers with a stylized environment.

There is nothing lazy about Terraria or Hotline Miami.

Developing games is tough and I imagine 3D is a lot more work than 2D. I'm guessing many of those studios couldn't exactly be indie if they had to do their games in 3D. Besides, good 2D is better than bad 3D.
