Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo: All These Sequels Don't Mean We're 'Playing It Safe'

I haven't been wowed by a Nintendo console game reveal since Galaxy 1. What they're doing is the very definition of playing it safe, and considering the position the Wii U is in, there's nothing wrong with that. But in all honesty, who do they honestly think they're kidding? A console sequel to a 3DS 3D Mario was one of the biggest "fuck you"s to Nintendo fans i've ever seen and yet they took it with a smile on their face. I don't know how gamers willingly accept some of this laziness while disparaging annual releases like CoD or AC.

Also after 3D World's reveal I take back everything negative I said about Sonic Lost Worlds.

They play it safe more than anyone else. If Nintendo went a couple of years without throwing out the usual Mario, Pokemon, Zelda or Donkey Kong they'd collapse in no time.

All they have is the same tired recycled franchises. The same characters doing the same thing in every game with little to no story.

That statement is true, but Nintendo ARE infact playing it safe. Its a shame their most ambitious title X is getting no love from them, they're treating it like some random game in the line up that we shouldn't worry about right now. They should be pushing for that game really hard, saving it as the last thing for their conferences, releasing dev interviews and giving live demo's for the press. Essentially they need to start trying to hype their new core projects instead of just hoping they catch on.

This.

I also agree with Veknoid.

I agree with him. Sony is known for taking other peoples IP's changing a few things and calling it a new experience. See PS all Stars, Uncharted, LBP, Modnation, or any other IP they have come up with last gen, its all just copies of what some other company did first.
The same people crying over 3 similar Marios between ds,Wii and Wii U are foaming at the mouth for part 5 or 6 of series on their console of choice so their argument usually ends up not being valid in the end.
When Nintendo does make a new IP it is ignored by the people asking for it. I can think of 5 from last gen but if I named then, the excuses would begin.

Wow, just wow.

On topic:Nintendo should try more new ips though. Though the sequels do sell consoles so they are important too. That kind of is playing it safe though.

I guess Uncharted, Last of Us, and Little Big Planet were all taken from someone else. Tell you what. If you can name a core Sony franchise that has a part 5 or 6 to it, I'd love to hear about it.

Ratchet and clank have like 11 games.  God of War has 6 plus the ios game, Grand turismo has 5 games, is that enough?

Idk about Little Big Planet as I never played it, but there are a lot of simularities between Uncharted and Tomb Raider.  And the Last of Us plays almost Identically to Uncharted (gameplay wise, the story is absolutely fantastic though).

Tomb Raider (reboot) came after Uncharted...so, yeah right.

Playing it safe? Yes.
What defines a new IP? Gameplay or new setting or/and both...

End of story.

And proud member of the Mega Mario Movement!

I think people aren't getting the whole "playing it safe" thing. In one sense, it is playing it safe, but the way Miyamoto is talking it is not. The games that are "playing it safe" are also held to a certain standard. Sequels are NOT NOT NOT NOT NOT and I repeat again NOT always safe bets. They rarely are. If a game is critically acclaimed the first time, it is usually a big risk to go for a sequel and match the quality of the last, if not beating it.
The only thing that's "safe" about what Nintendo is doing is that it will have that "character recognition" in it.

I'm still waiting to see the gaming community blast Activision when Call of Duty 34 releases.

I miss the Nintendo that produced Nintendogs, Brain Age, Brain Academy, Wii Sports, Wii Fit, Wii Music, etc.

Those were all great new IPs which were also new gameplay experiences.

I don't really count Nintendoland in with this group because it's mostly, if not totally all old gameplay experiences just reskinned and lumped together.

Actually, that is exactly what it means.
