I think people aren't getting the whole "playing it safe" thing. In one sense, it is playing it safe, but the way Miyamoto is talking it is not. The games that are "playing it safe" are also held to a certain standard. Sequels are NOT NOT NOT NOT NOT and I repeat again NOT always safe bets. They rarely are. If a game is critically acclaimed the first time, it is usually a big risk to go for a sequel and match the quality of the last, if not beating it.
The only thing that's "safe" about what Nintendo is doing is that it will have that "character recognition" in it.
