Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo Can Solve All Its Wii U Problems With Metroid

Do you honestly think that if the Wii U released with a Metroid game instead of New Super Mario Bros. U, it would have had better sales?

Maybe.  I know there are a lot of Metroid fans who would have bought the Wii U just for a new Metroid game.

How about this, I'll wait until Super Mario 3D World is released.  If the Wii U sells a lot more once that's released, I'll agree that Mario sells systems and NSMBU didn't sell more systems because it was the only title at the time that people wanted.  If it's just a small sales spike and SM3DW sales are high, I'll continue to think that people just buy Mario games because they're on the system and they already have it.

That does delay the moment where you admit to me you were wrong but that seems fair.

Only 2 Metroid games have ever sold more than 2 million copies, and none since Metroid Prime on Gamecube. I would like to think the Nintendo gamers who are Metroid fanatics already supported Nintendo and bought a Wii U. But even those who didn't yet won't increase hardware sales much.

Hopefully Retro next project maybe combing their experience of Metroid with 2D platforming of Donkey Kong Wii U. So we finally get a true 2D home console sequel to Super Metroid in HD.

I'm sorry, but there is something seriously wrong with the attitdue a lot of modern gamers have that somehow 2D gaming "doesn't belong" as a full retail game. Or that if they are, they "should cost less" than a 3D game. A hell of a lot of 3D games are very light/shallow on content, and aren't worth the money they cost to buy. Whereas many modern 2D games are certainly worth full retail price. 2D gaming, if it's done WELL, should not be relegated to digital downloads and portable systems.

What I'm talking about, when I say I want Metroid 5, as a retail Wii U title, is this. Have you seen Muramasa: The Demon Blade? Or A Boy and His Blob? Or Wario Land: Shake It? Or the upcoming Dragon's Crown? What I'm talking about is along those lines, a fully 2D game, with HD, gorgeous hand-drawn sprites, a huge adventure with all the bells and whistles HD consoles have to offer, but with the old school (right) approach to Metroid, that of Super Metroid, Zero Mission, etc Preferably made IN-HOUSE, by Nintendo, by the same people who made Zero Mission at the very least.

Not only would that be worth every penny of full retail price, but a full blown 2D home console sequel to Super Metroid, I think, would absolutely outsell Other M or even the Prime games. Simply based on the hype/desire for that kind of Metroid again. IF it could live up to being called Metroid 5 (IE being better than the okay but not GREAT Metroid 4/Fusion), yes, I think it could be a big hit.

Firts, I am huge fan of 2D games and know there is a huge market for then. I just don't agree with another 2D Metroid for a home console. And yes, I played Muramasa and LOVE IT.

100% disagree. Don't even have to read it because it is obvious to anyone who knows the sales record of Metroid that Metroid alone does not have the power to move systems enough to "solve the problems" of the Wii U. Also, I don't think a 1st party game will convince 3rd parties to make games for the Wii U. Which really seems to be the crux of this argument.

Hahaha, no :(

At this point a new Metroid would be a success if it even reached 1 Mil sales...

If they made  REAL 2D follow up to Super Metroid, no, it would sell far more than that.

Other M was lucky to reach a million becasue it was a steaming pile of shit. The moral of that story is NEVER let Team Ninja work on one of your franchises. They can't even get their OWN franchises right.

I think a digital downloadabe 2d metroid game would do great, it would likaely be relatively cheap to develope and could still look great, and lest be honest, woul dbe amazing to play, and it wouldnt need huge sales, the brand alone would most likely cause the game to become highly profitable!

Metroid Prime 4 would make my head explode.

Maybe not marketshare wise, but if it were done RIGHT? It would definately elevate it's status amoungst the core. And by core I don't mean dude bros, but people like us. And when you think about it? If the Wii-U CAN'T attract those casual buys like they did last gen, the core is all that's left. Why not do the opposite of MS and decide to go all in core wise? You won't win the generation, but you'll make money.
