Forums - Microsoft - Microsoft looking into playing games offline on Xbox One

$499 isn't the best price point.  It won't sell too well till it gets down to ~300.  It will sell through the initial buyers but mass consumers won't drop 500 on a video game system.

If rumours are to be believed, MS will followup with a cheaper version with a subscription plan, which will include xbox live gold and a streaming TV package.

That'd be a decent compromise, although it would make more sense that if the primary system hadn't checked in for 24 hours, the game be made unavailable to sharing.

Why not just let you, oh I dont know.

Stick a disc into your X1 and play the damn game. Whether its online or offline why in the heck should it even matter? If I want to lend someone a game why cant I just hand them the disc?

The fact people have to imagine complex scenarios to even make this thing remotely consumer friendly speaks volumes. Playing and enjoying a piece of entertainment should never be this complicated.

Their engineers could makensuch a thing possible? What a marvel of techology that console is.

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

- George Orwell, ‘1984’

OR maybe, just maybe, the 24 hour checks authentication allows some new cool features in games that wouldn't be possible without it?

Granted they haven't communicated the WHY'S well enough at all, but I really think the wrong battle is being waged here by gamers ...

A console wide system to mandate a 24 hour check in doesnt have anything to do with "enhanced gaming features."

And if so why has MS not provided a single example?

I have a question with this 24 hr thing. What if I leave my xbox unplugged or turned off for weeks? what happens than? Cause i do not play console games every day and during school i don't play video games period since i live away from home.

The only reason Microsoft is going ahead with this craziness is because they know they can easily backtrack on this post-launch with a simple firmware update . They would if sales are bad and peoples' memories will be erased.
I mean they got away with charging for peer to peer online and even the frickin RROD thing. Microsoft doesn't give a shit at this point.

Just an idea here. Why not allow there to be a Xbox Live option to allow “offline” mode, but it disables any family sharing? Like

“If Xbox One hasn’t connected in 24 hrs: [] Disable game & Allow Sharing [] Enable Game & Disallow Sharing”

Major Nelson responded to said question with:

I’d have to check w/ the engineers, but I don’t see why that would not be possible.

There are a few problems with that scenario

You could load up an xbox one with games, disconnect it, sell the games, and play them as long as you like.
Can be solved by requiring you to insert the disc instead.

The disallow sharing would also prevent you accessing your library from a different xbox one, thus what happens if the one your games are locked to breaks down?

Is there anything else for which the 24h check-ins are hardcoded into the system? For example mandatory firmware updates to close potential loopholes from piracy. (ps3 jailbreak for example)

Anyway by far not enough to ease me into a pure digital licence model. It solves internet outtages and taking your console somewhere without internet but you still don't have control over your game, still need an initial online activation, still restricted in what you can do with your disc, still no ownership.

Well the new sharing features will be possible because of it, so that's a cool enhancement.  But, as I mentioned, for whatever reason they have done a poor job of communicating the why's and we've done a bad job of requesting an answer.  All we've done is complained about it.  Granted, that can be a way to get an answer, but I always have preferred the direct approach as it's more productive.

Q:  "The 24 hour authentication requirement has caused quite a stir.  Right now it seems like a new inconvenience for gamers that has little if any tangible benefit to them.  What are the benefits to gamers for this requirement?"

Has any 'journalist' asked that question that way?
