Forums - Microsoft - Microsoft looking into playing games offline on Xbox One

StickSkills

After the crazy week that is E3 over and done, we’re now left thinking what the next generation will bring us in five or so months. As Microsoft dabbles with ‘always-online’ with their Xbox One, someone suggested something, and MS might be listening.

It all starts with user on NeoGAF suggested that making the cloud optional for players. It means that if you want to share your games with 10 players then that’s your option. This could also get out of having to authenticate your games and it’d normally just work like any modern Xbo 360. Instead of Microsoft dragging people into the digital world, they’re giving you options should you choose to do so.

Someone on Reddit suggested this as a question:

Just an idea here. Why not allow there to be a Xbox Live option to allow “offline” mode, but it disables any family sharing? Like

“If Xbox One hasn’t connected in 24 hrs: [] Disable game & Allow Sharing [] Enable Game & Disallow Sharing”

Major Nelson responded to said question with:

I’d have to check w/ the engineers, but I don’t see why that would not be possible.

So Microsoft could allow you to play games without using the cloud, whether they choose to do that is another question. It’s an interesting decision that could help Microsoft ease people into a digital world should they choose to take it or not.

It's hardly a promise, so I won't keep my hopes up. But it's good to know it's being looked into by Major Nelson.

Completely defeats what they are trying to do, wont ever happen.

That could work pretty well.

I hope so, I really want to play killer instinct

Ms will never do this

Why not just allow the disk to be put into the One, if the person can't access the Internet every 24 hours?  Or, if you have a digitial downloaded version of the game, then just have people play that one?  I can't expect Microsoft to do this though.

An insert disc to play option would work, I can't see why they can't. It would be a backwards step though in the direction they want to take.

Sounds like PC gaming from the 90s.  The insert disc to play game even though game is pretty much loaded onto your computer.  I see no reason why they can't at least implement this option for those that don't want the 24 hour check in.

But it opens up more sales for the console.  I won't bank on it, until they show it would happen.  By the time they get around to changing things, however, it could be too late if the PS4 really takes off.  The ONE really has no advantages, unless the vision Microsoft is pushing REALLY takes off and they lock in a bunch of people.
