Serious? I think MS definitely went in with a plan to sell as many or more Xbones than Xbox360s, and at an improved or steady market share. There's no way they planned to alienate and disenfranchise a large segment of their gamer base. I think MS has lowered its expectations now that they know how much people value their freedom, and that PS4 is $100 cheaper. But the only way you'll convince me that MS went into this expecting lower sales and smaller market share is if you find an internal memo from a high up MS exec from 2012 saying, in effect "we're doing all this DRM and compulsory internet stuff, and we know that we'll drop in both total sales and market share. But what we lose in market share and install base we'll make up in higher and sustained revenue from every box.
If 95% of Xbones have a persistent live Gold account that is maintained for 3-5 years that's really substantial revenue compared to the much lower % and intermittent pattern of Gold subs on the 360. OTOH I think PSN+ % and persistence of subs for PS4 is going to be substantially more than PS3, and PS4 is going to increase market share, and possibly increase total sales over PS3. As things stand it appears Sony have the better business plan than MS in terms of what really matters to the company: profit. Sony certainly apears to be executing its business plan better at least.
