Forums - Microsoft - Calm down, MS policies are not that bad.

I agree with you many are arguing for the sake of arguing but on both sides. But here are my answers to your questions:

My internet has been on since December, when I moved house and was without any internet for 2 weeks. This said I jsut got back from holiday when I turned off my power. This is classed as no internet, what would the Xbone do during this time?

No companies would have gone out of busniess 'because' of used games (for there to be a used game the game has already been bought once), they go out of business because of piracy and bad money management. This is a guard against piracy, used games (even used CDs and used DVDs etc) is part of the entertainment industry and it helps keeps game retailers open. Removing a vital source of income for games retailers will mean you won't see any on the high street at all. I however like to buy games new at a reduced cost over used games.

PS4 will be different because it's infastructure is not dependent on a net connection, this has been said. However if EA were to enforce some kind of DRM based ondisc based games then you can be sure EA might lose a lot of business because of it. No one is going to buy a game you can't play at all.

Internet is the future, you are correct but whether internet if the future, it's not the now. Many around the world outside of the mighty US of A do not have good net connection.

The borrowing games thing has only just been clarified and even then it's not great, seriously just giving my disc to a mate is usually enough. As for breaking the disc, I don't think I've ever had an issue with that, I've had disc scratch before but because it was part of the way it all works, I wouldn't mind buying a new/used copy to replace it. Digital is great for that.

Not everyone can afford internet, you might say not everyone should therefore be buying a console or games. But this isn't about who can afford it or not, it's about who has it and what MS expects me to have. Even in the UK broadband is not truely available everyhwere and dialup is still used in some places and more remote locations.

What it feels like to many is either abandenment or anger at features which could affect the entire industry or them individually. Many never had an issue with the Xbone's power, the great games (Titanfall looks great) or it's Kinect features, they had an issue with the DRM yet to many this was an attack on the console as a whole, which it isn't.

Do you own a smartphone?  A smartphone can link your Xbox ONE to the internet for the few seconds authentication takes.

There is plentiful evidence that used games have contributed to some game developers going out of business.  I agree that this is not the sole cause of any one developer going under.

Again, I will emphasise you do not need a good internet connection to play Xbox One.  You simply need an internet connection of any kind.  Even on your phone.

I will also point out what many already have.  If you cannot afford any internet, $400+ consoles already aren't for you...

Every time I see someone defending a multi-billion dollar company for screwing the consumer over because of some crazy "brand loyalty", I lose a little more faith in humanity.

Common sense is not so common it would seem.

I don't have a smart phone, no need for one personally, but I have no doubt a phone network would be enough to authenticate the Xbone, as Im sure it's a tiny packet that is sent over however... why should you? Even if it only takes 10 minutes to do this check, you still have to do it.

I just don't buy from what people are saying how used games are hurting the industry and closing developers, if it has an impact it is minor at best. Piracy closes studios, bad money management, bad sales of a product. No one can even tell how much of an affect used games sales truely has as there are no figures. I said in another thread about how I believe that once a developer/publisher sells a copy of the game, they don't need to worry what happens to it, they have their money from that purchase, if the customer wishes sell it because he wasn't enjoying it then let them, this includes all their rights to play the game as well including online. He doesn't own it anymore after that, a new person does, no change in number of owners (and in the case of many online games, a potential customer to buy DLC where the original customer would have let the game sit on a shelf and never purchase DLC at all).

On you last point, I read a post on a new website comments section yesterday. A guy who works in the Navy on an aircraft carrier. He can happily and easily afford a $400 console, his internet connection though is something entirely different situation.

Hmm, pie.

I guess we just tend to disagree then.  For me, the 30 seconds it takes to switch a smartphone to wifi mode is worth it if the games are there.

However I agree with your last point.  I read a similar argument about the army in the Middle East.  That said, MS has does promotional work with them before, wouldnt surprise me if they do some sort of PR stunt around that at some point...

The policies are quite bad. But it just isn't bad enough to kill my interest in some Xbox One exclusives.

Sony fans should actually be happy about this. Its going to help the sales of the preferred platform. Instead, they piss and moan at us consumers willing to tolerate MS's policies.

Because consumers who tolerate the policies are enabling MS to get away with the policies you consider yourself as "quite bad". Enablers are the worst kind of consumers.

Sony fans were/are looking out for the future of the gaming industry by standing with enraged gamers to stop this precedent even though Sony is not doing this.

Well if Used-Games are hurting the industry, that just tells us the current business model that developers/publishers are using is incredibly flawed and needs to change, throwing everything on the internet isn't the way to do that, Bethesda has had stupidly large amounts of success with single-player "offline" games, so it's not a financial requirement by any means.

As for the authentication, it's an inconvenience, it's Microsoft's way of controlling what people are doing, in a decade or two, they will shut the Live! service off like they did with the origional Xbox, turning all your games and your console into a useless brick, good-bye to retro gaming on the console.

Personally the 24 hour authentication doesn't actually bother me, but it's on principle that I refuse to buy the Xbox One. - With that said I'll probably skip all the consoles this Generation, the PS4 has no games I'm interested in, the Wii U doesn't interest me in the slightest.

When game companies do this at present they tend to send through a patch before hand making offline play possible

I'm not willing to make a gamble of hundreds of dollars worth of system/games on that. :P

MS is rich not the developers.

If I'm not mistaken there is news that the X1 will only work on selected countries. So if your country is not on the list its not going to work because of the 24 hrs check in. Unless some of the internet journalist made a mistake in understanding the policy. I think that is bad.

Can someone clarify me on this to be sure. Thanks.
