I don't have a smart phone, no need for one personally, but I have no doubt a phone network would be enough to authenticate the Xbone, as Im sure it's a tiny packet that is sent over however... why should you? Even if it only takes 10 minutes to do this check, you still have to do it.

I just don't buy from what people are saying how used games are hurting the industry and closing developers, if it has an impact it is minor at best.

Well if Used-Games are hurting the industry, that just tells us the current business model that developers/publishers are using is incredibly flawed and needs to change, throwing everything on the internet isn't the way to do that, Bethesda has had stupidly large amounts of success with single-player "offline" games, so it's not a financial requirement by any means.

As for the authentication, it's an inconvenience, it's Microsoft's way of controlling what people are doing, in a decade or two, they will shut the Live! service off like they did with the origional Xbox, turning all your games and your console into a useless brick, good-bye to retro gaming on the console.

Personally the 24 hour authentication doesn't actually bother me, but it's on principle that I refuse to buy the Xbox One. - With that said I'll probably skip all the consoles this Generation, the PS4 has no games I'm interested in, the Wii U doesn't interest me in the slightest.

When game companies do this at present they tend to send through a patch before hand making offline play possible
