It did look not very good, so it's criticism was well deserved and might have influenced Nintendo, who knows...
But. Declaring it garbage obviously was premature. Metroid prime had this issue too.

Indeed. But I think the doubts were more well-founded in Prime's case, since Retro Studios was unproven at the time.

"Hardware design isn’t about making the most powerful thing you can.
Today most hardware design is left to other companies, but when you make hardware without taking into account the needs of the eventual software developers, you end up with bloated hardware full of pointless excess. From the outset one must consider design from both a hardware and software perspective."

I don't know what it is but it always seems that pretty much only Nintendo games get this much hate before it's release
other games always get the "it will improve" "the game isn't finished yet" "wait until release" etc etc

If it isn't turnbased it isn't worth playing

And shepherds we shall be,
For Thee, my Lord, for Thee. Power hath descended forth from Thy hand, That our feet may swiftly carry out Thy command. So we shall flow a river forth to Thee And teeming with souls shall it ever be. In Nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritūs Sancti. -----The Boondock Saints
