When it released many websites considered Fire Emblem: Awakening to be a GOTY contender. I doubt it would win against TLOU, though.

Right now Bioshock Infinite and The Last of Us are the only real contenders. The next closest thing is probably Tomb Raider, and that's not going to stand up to either of the other two.

GTA V will probably wind up being a real contender. Beyond: Two Souls and The Walking Dead: Season 2 might also be contenders, but considering their more minimalistic gameplay, their chances will likely rest on the strength of their respective stories/characters. The folks at Telltale can definitely pull that off, but I'm a little less certain about David Cage and Quantic Dream. Heavy Rain had some great narrative moments, but also suffered from some serious plot holes.

It's rare for a sequel of a GoTY contender to be GoTY material, especially if it releases just a year later.

I think it's between Infinite and Last of Us at the moment, and Beyond and GTA5 when they come out, as people have been saying. But many people seem to be forgetting Watch Dogs, which is still set for this year.

Oh wow, I can't believe watch dogs completely slipped my mind. Since it was one of the games that I would prob get with a next gen console. Just judging by how ambitious it's, if it pans out right, then def goty contender.

Currently I would say Bioshock Infinite, Fire Emblem: Awakening, and The Last of Us (at least according to reviews so far). Between the three, The Last of Us appears to have received the highest praise from critics, so at least for now, that seems like the game to beat. Other potential GotY candidates include Grand Theft Auto V and Beyond: Two Souls, depending on how those games turn out.

In my opinion, I think Bioshock Infinite would have had the award more on lock if the gameplay was similar to its 2011 Demo (don't watch it if you plan to play the game, lest it inflate expectations).

Ni no Kuni by a mile for me.

Nothing comes close, really (I'm sure I'm forgetting tons of great games at the moment, but this is a game I will remember for years to come).

The Last of Us already won, prematurely.

Educated guess? The Last of Us and Bioshock Infinite for now. Everything else really is up in the air but I would also suggest.

The Last of Us reviews aren't finished I believe we still have up until the date of launch. It's currently one point behind Super Mario Galaxy 1&2 on Metacritic. This is bananas!

Most likely The last of Us and Bioshock:Infinite BUT I hope Ni No Kuni will snag a few GOTY awards.

Well forthcoming Nintendo games will be good, 3D Mario, Pikmin etc. Batman and Watch dogs look special too. Not goty material, far from it, but im loving the hell out of Lego City Undercover.
