Forums - Nintendo - Wii U Basic Being Recalled! Confirmed by GameStop - [ UPDATED ]

Oh wow, the WiiU just gets worse and worse. Any type of recall, be it dumping stock (check), or replacing it with better stock (check) is terrible for something that is not even a year old. The Dreamcast didn't even have this.

What Nintendo needs is to release a new awesome peripheral (like the Wii Fit board was) , pronto.

That ship has sailed. What they need to focus on first is the core. It's become pretty obvious that this console won't have mass market appeal like the Wii did.

Says who? they can still gather the mass appeal if they have a catchy peripheral + software. I will concede that the Wii U gamepad will NEVER have that appeal BY ITSELF (now matter how good software is developed for it). But if they can create a NEW thing like the balance board it will be 10 times cheaper than scratching Wii U and making a whole new console. And I'm sorry to tell you but the "core" of Nintendo fans is not large enough (as Wii U sales have shown) and expecting that small audience to carry the Wii U on its back and expand the installed-base to a *competitive position* is folly.

a) The casual market has gone. It is a one hit wonder and people won't buy anything new for a few years/until they bin and forget about their Wii's.

People forgot about their Wiis a long time ago.

b) Compared to Kinect 2 and the tablet/phone market, they can't win with peripherals anymore. That time has gone. Kinect hasn't delievered the software though, Nintendo has the advantage in that regard. They could bundle this new peripheral with every Wii U.

c) They have a fit board.....which works with a wiiU. No one cares anymore. Been there, done that - next. I'm talking about something new, not another fit board, I thought that one was clear............. .... ... . . .                                                                .  .

I'm guessing the 8 gig model is much less popular than the 32 gig model... at GameStop.

Possibly at other retailers like WalMart, the opposite is true.

Which means Nintendo may be recalling 8 gig models from GameStop... and moving them to WalMart.

They are not dumping the 8 gig models into a landfill or incinerating them. They are moving them.

Actually, I think the general numbers are somewhere around 15-20% of all Wii U's sold globally being Basic and the rest are Premium, some stores and chains might have even lower numbers. Seeing the Wii U's total weekly sales, 15-20% of 20-30k is not a whole lot, if the world's retailers can only move about 3000-6000 units of the Basic every week on average, I doubt the Basic set has a future on shelves anywhere, stores will simply not want it. Looking for source on these percentages, I could have sworn there was a thread about this not too long ago!

The Basic is selling a whole lot worse than the Premium set, that much is certain.

The Basic set is plain silly and should never have been released at all.

It's not dire, it's exciting! I'm thinking 8gig wipe out and 32gig price drop announcement at e3.

No, I'd say it's pretty dire for Nintendo.

Still, perhaps some quick, decisive action now, followed up with a barrage of quality software, will jumpstart the Wii U like it did the 3DS. Or perhaps it will work out like the PS3, where the flow is staunched but the bleeding just never seems to stop.

Yeah... as far as i can tell this is an oddly unprecedented move.

Console manufacturers usually just leave old models on the shelves.

It can't be that they don't have enough production....

It'd make me concerned if I already owned a Wii U Basic.

I wouldn't be too concerned if i owned a Wii U basic, it is still going to play all upcoming wii games just the same as the deluxe.

Yeah, I do agree with you. To ask for systems to be sent back is negative no matter how you spin it. It means you messed up somewhere along the line.

Talk of sending them back to be upgraded doesn't make one bit of financial sense. That would push the overall cost of the returned system over the cost of the ready made deluxe only to sell them for the same price.

If Nintendo want rid of them best to sell them dirt cheap and be the end of it. Give them away almost.

I am puzzled by this. None of the reasons I have read here make any sense. Not saying they are all wrong, who knows, but they just don't seem logical.

Maybe Nintendo can take them back and reprocess the units to 32GB models for the fall season.

Usually yes, hardware is not returned, but the Wii U is selling so slowly that Nintendo may view it as something that's killing their inventory re-orders with retailers who refuse to order more Wii U stock because they have a glut of basic models just sitting there not moving at all.

That's just what would make me worried... it doesn't make sense.

I can only think of two possibilties

1) a RROD type issue.  Which, nobody has mentioned anything like that, and Nintendo has always been the best at hardware quality, so that seems unlikely.  Plus it wouldn't JUST be the 8 gig then.

2) They're upgrading the something with the specs that just makes it so the Wii U basic isn't feasable.  (For example, with the harddrive some games are coming that require a GIGANTIC portion of 8GB.)

I honestly wouldn't be shocked if there is an entire Wii U redesign in 2014.

Chipset moved to the 28nm process, made even smaller, more stylish casing, smaller/thinner controller with a larger capacity battery standard and a higher resolution (720p) screen for off-TV play.

Didnt the Vita have a similar situation recently where they pulled stock from areas it was selling especially poorly and redistributing it in areas it was more popular? I think this is the same thing and maybe once all the 8gb units are sold they will discontinue it and sell the 32gb for $299

yep. Nintendo is going to change the 8GB to 32GB of flash memory and resell them as deluxe.

Since this is happening one week after E3, I expect big news on new bundling options and quite possibly a price change for $299 for WiiU. (only one sku from now on) and various pricing depending on bundled game.

Hell, they may go crazy and drop it to $249 to $279 and have $299 the price point with a bundled game besides NL.

I also hope this corresponds to a set of free digital stuff from eShop for us early adopters.

Yep!

Kinect software has failed to impress, even the casuals are getting tired of it. It'll have the same effect as Wii vs Wii U. All those Kinect gamers will keep playing on their old 360 since they won't see enough reason to shell out $500+ to get a new console plus new Kinect 2.0 games.

It's Nintendo, they can come up with something, just saying.
